"Replace With Clip" not working

I just upgraded to Premiere Pro CC 2017. Much to my dismay, the "Replace With Clip" functionality is not working.

I've restarted Premiere and restarted my computer with no results. I'm certain I have the clip selected in the bin and the clip selected in the timeline.

I'm working on a PC running Windows 7 with plenty of RAM (16GB). I've never had this problem until I upgraded to 2017.

Here's a screenshot. The "Replace With Clip" item is greyed out in the contextual menu. My keyboard shortcut to "Replace With Clip from Bin" does not work either.

I use this function all the time and need to find a solution pronto!

Joe,

Sorry. I tested the issue and it works as it used to in previous versions (edit: it was mentioned that Alt/Option drag was the way it worked). That is, I have a floating bin and the command is no longer disabled.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi this bug is still here in 2024!!

Also can someone change the correct answer to "alt drag" instead of the current wrong answer of "it works as it used to"?
Would be nice not to have to read the whole thread for such a simple fix.

It is very frustrating as I have several weekly clients that require simply the replacement of pics and fonts on the timeline with other pre-made  pics and fonts stored in the bins. Alt-drag works but the point is that there has been a heavily used "Replace Clip" option in the past and that there is still a tease of it being there. good reading from you guyswill appreciate anyone stopping by my blog.- cane corso puppies near me, cane corso puppies for sale

This works for me:
You have to be able to see the clip in the project panel (with the project panel/tab in view).
If a clip selected in a bin panel/tab is what you see and the project panel or tab is unseen/unselected, Replace With Clip will be greyed out.

Hi Kevin,

The same issue is still there. Unless I have an item selected from main bin, the option to replace clip from bin is greyed-out ( also the shortcut won't work), This is a real problem for sorting with sub folders(bins) especially if you import Photoshop layers they are automatically in a sub-bin. This worked in earlier versions and it is a real headache in the new version. Thanks for your help in advance.

Kind Regards

Derek

I cannot believe this is a thread from 2017.

I'm having the same issue described in this thread. "Replace with clip" is greyed out.

The last thing I did was update to Windows 11 (stupid f*ing mistake btw, don't do it! The reasons are – let's say – plentiful.). All my Adobe Apps got updated as well (assuming to a Win11 version), and now the "replace with clip" context menu option is gone or rather unavailable.

Alright, found out what's the problem. Apparently it's a bug that has to do with upgraded "title" items.

As you know, those old title cards are deprecated. When you open an old project, Premiere will ask whether you'd like to upgrade your ald legacy/deprecated title items to the new version (whatever it's called now). It will then create a copy of the old item and append "-Upgraded" to the item's name, like so:

("Scene Missing" is the name I gave the original item, since it's a "scene missing" title obviously)

The "Replace With Clip context menu item greyed out" bug seems to happen with instances of upgraded title elements. Looks a lot like a bug to me.

(Additionally, effects on instances of legacy titles seem to not be carried over properly in the upgrade process. While they are rendered visually correct and all the original effects still appear in the "Effect Controls" panel, all effect keyframes seem to be lost, or at least are not displayed.)

Hi Vlim,

Sorry you are having trouble with upgraded Legacy Titles and Replace Footage. I tested the OP's bug and it seems resolved, however. Can you file your issue separately here? https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro

Thanks,
Kevin

Can Adobe please actually fix this bug?  Providing a work-around for something that previously worked WITHOUT a work-around is not a solution.

We are literally paying money for a subscription that contains a bug that Adobe has had 2 years to fix.  If the premise is that we are paying for a subscription model, so that updates and bug fixes are easier to implement, then it is inexcusable that Adobe refuses to fix a bug that DID NOT exist prior to CC2017.

Still a problem as of CC19, here's me talking about it a year ago with yet another workaround: https://community.adobe.com/t5/Premiere-Pro/Replace-Clip-with-Sequence-Error/td-p/10218133

Ahhh so here's the work around that works right now (CC19). You have to do some manual work but it's better than nothing...

01- Create nests of replacement assets. Make the timeline timecode same as the OG clip. You can do this by selecting:

02- Select clip you want to replace in your master timeline.

03- Open source clip in the source panel. Copy the timecode start.

04- Open the replacement clip in the source panel. Paste timecode start.

05- Select clip you want to replace in the timeline and:

This will match the clip to the manually selected timecode and things will be right-on.

So slow, so stupid. Why not just an alt drag of the file (like good old After Effects?) woof woof woof!!!

I am now having this SAME problem in V.12 Haberdasher (CC 2018).

Mine stems from the fact of using floating bins/windows. If I have the clip selected in the floating bin, it is not recognized.  Same is true for the legacy titler. If you do one of those "New Title Based On Current Title," it bases what bin the title shows up in based on the last bin you clicked in.  Well, if I have a floating window open and something highlighted, it doesn't recognize that either, as previously.  It works if you have it selected in the project pane.  Everything works perfectly when selected in the project pane.  It is only the floating bins/windows that are problematic.  Now, they suggested posting this in the BUG form... I have been doing this since the problem first showed up in cc2017 (first version), and the problem still persists.  I have diligently filled out a BUG request with each revision of CC 2017.  And here we are in CC 2018...

Attached is a screen cap of what is happening.  You can see where I have a floating bin/window open and a clip selected.  You can see where I have something in the source monitor. You can also see where I have right-clicked on the clip to bring up the context menu. You can also see where the "Replace With Clip... From Bin" is grayed out.  THAT is the problem.  I have a CLIP in the BIN selected.  But the software thinks not. Why is this not getting fixed?  Used to work just fine.. Not now. Frustrating.

You have the same bin open twice.

Make sure there is but one open.

Tried closing the bin in the project window, and it still did not work.  Thanks for the suggestion though!!

Same issue here. Replace With Clip > from Bin  not functioning. Number of bins open makes no difference.

Replace With Clip > from Source Monitor still works as before.

Have you tried resetting your workspace to a default one? That would resolve the issue related to open bins.

Thanks Jeff –While my issue has nothing to do with open bins it does temporarily solve the issue regarding Replace Clip With > From Bin being inactive. Obviously, I’m not going to revert to a default workspace just to make this feature active each time I need it; it should work with my workspaces as it always has before. I won’t mark this as “Correct” yet since it seems to be an issue with this CC version. I look forward to the fix!

Thank you,

Having the same problem here. In my workflow with previous versions, I could have ANY number of project windows open, displaying the contents of multiple bins. Premiere would remember the MOST RECENT clip i had selected in any bin, and allow me to perform a Replace With Clip > From Bin using that most recent selection.

Now, this no longer works. The "from bin" option remains greyed out unless a clip is selected in whichever bin window Premiere believes to be the "canonical" or "official" or "primary" project window. Even more frustrating, so long as any clip is selected in that "canonical" project window, this action will ignore ANY more recent selection in another bin.

This effectively makes is so that the Replace With Clip > From Bin ONLY works with one *SPECIFIC* bin. (which, BTW, premiere does not visually distinguish from all the other bins that are open...). As others have stated, this is a humongous pain when working with complex projects where we actually ORGANIZE our stuff.

This is even worse for me, as I work on highly templatized projects where I stay sane by automating as much tedium as possible using keyboard macros, so this change in behavior has caused me to go from a 2-click solution to a "multi-screen, scroll around and waste a bunch of time" approach. I really like it better when things just work

For what it's worth, you can still ALT/OPTION+drag a clip onto another to replace and it works, regardless of how many bins you have open.

I'm having the same issue.  Replace from bin is randomly available or not available, and even when available, it often does nothing.  Previous version of PP worked just fine.  I often have to load the replacement clip/item into the source monitor and then do a replace clip from source monitor.

Same here, I experienced this bug after the last update (for me it was yesterday).

I got it to work by closing every bin-window except one. If you have multiple open, you can only replace with clips from source monitor.

Please fix this quick, i am also relying on this function.
