Random freeze ups when using Media Browser window in PP2018

Participant ,

Running latest version on iMac Pro (High Sierra 10.13.2). Browsing through my stock footage archives in Media Browser is causing freeze ups in Premiere. Initially got an error message about QT32 bit files being obsolete and that I should convert these. At this point I've converted everything in folder to ProRes but still getting random freeze ups. Seems to only happen in Thumbnail view, not list view. Also doesn't seem to be an issue importing clips in through Finder. Wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue or has some other suggestions for trouble shooting.

Hi Evil Edison,

Sorry for the inconvenience. It could be an issue with Permissions or the location of the files.

Reset the permissions & check the issue. Instructions: Premiere Pro CC, CC 2014, or 2014.1 freezing on startup or crashing while working (Mac OS X 10.9, an...

What is the location of the footage?

Thanks,

Vidya.

Hi Vidya

I changed the permissions but problem is still occurring. I'm probably wrong but I feel like it's somehow related to thumbnail icons.

Footage is located on an Areca 8050T2 drive.

I used the media browser in AE and haven't had any issues (although that one doesn't generate thumbnails). I've also used Adobe Bridge to browse through same footage folders (with thumbnails) and don't seem to be having any issues. Seems to be purely an Adobe Premiere issue.

Let me know what else you'd like me to try.

Thanks

Sean

This issue is being investigated and a possible workaround is to set the Media Browser to List View (as you have already noted). The other possible workaround is to disable Hover Scrub when in Thumbnail View (right-click on Media Browser tab and uncheck Hover Scrub).

The odd thing is that I have not noticed this issue with Mac OS 10.12.x nor Windows.

Hi Trent,

Yeah I started noticing the problem as soon as I upgraded to Mac OS High Sierra. Hope you come up with a fix soon as I love the thumbnail and hover scrub feature when trying to sort through clips.

Thanks!

Hi Trent

Glad to know it's not just me. As Faraz says, the thumbnail view is pretty critical to workflow as I have hundreds of clips to look through and the file names are not always that meaningful. My workaround for now has been to review clips in Bridge (which doesn't give me any problems in thumbnail view) and drag/drop the clips I want into PrPro. Thanks for the update though and happy to know the team has this problem on the radar.

Sean

Hey Sean,

Yeah the bridge workaround will work for most clips but it does not generate thumbnails for RED clips unfortunantley.

Hope you can fix this soon adobe.

Agree it definitely isn't an ideal work flow. But for me, I mostly just need to browse through my stock footage libraries which are mostly ProRes or H264 so I can suffer through with Bridge for now. When I'm working with raw footage like Red, I'm generally bringing everything in without the need to browse so the ListView workaround will suffice. Good to know that Adobe recognizes the problem though. Hopefully get a fix soon.

I've been dealing with this problem on a High Sierra Mac running PP2018 ever since I upgraded 2 weeks ago.  I trashed every preference, preset, cache, everything Adobe in library and user and all old versions of apps.  Still have the problem.

Has anyone found a fix without disabling hover scrub?  I look through thousands of clips for this show.

FIXED IT FOR NOW

Changed memory settings in PP preferences and it hasn't crashed since.  I upped the RAM for other applications to 20GB from 6GB.  On my system, that leaves 44GB for PP.

Thanks for that information Mr. Pos. I'll try that out and see if it works on my system.  I've been getting by without the hover scrub in Media Browser but this definitely sucks for people who depend on that workflow.
