Relink others automatically not working

Community Beginner ,
Jun 16, 2022 Jun 16, 2022

I recently upgraded to Monteray and Premiere 22.4 - now I can't relink multiple files to anything.  I do have "relink others automatically" ticked, but it is forcing me to manually link each file (even if they are in the same folder location).  If I turn on the "Use media brower to locate files" - my external drives vanish so that is not working either.  Very frustrating as what should only take about 20 seconds is now taking hours to manually relink hundreds of files one by one.

I think I saw this on a different forum and you had it fixed but I just wanted to check to see if it's the same post? Did you get it working?

Hi Phillip - unfortunately, I'm still having all sorts of trouble relinking older projects in both premiere and after effects now.  (and not really old projects, just any projects from before I upgraded to Monterey a few weeks ago).  For example whenever I try to relink things in after effects I'm getting this error (see attachment). This is probably a different issue than why I can't link multiple files in premiere anymore.  But both issues are making is super frustrating when trying to reopen any older projects.

I've googled a ton of different articles regarding this issue.  The only workaround I've found so far is to go in and manually rename (remove the .mov extension) on every file inside the project and also inside the folder where the original footage was.  Obviously this is painstakingly slow and not a real solution, but it's all I've got right now.  It feels like an issue with Quicktime and Adobe not communicating anymore.  Wondering if I should get rid of Quicktime and replace with VLC player???  Or is there something better to replace Quicktime with that will talk to Adobe on a Mac?

Doesn't seem to be a QT issue if it's happening with Braw and h264s.

@Phillip Harvey - back to my orginal issue of not being able to relink multiple files in premiere - Basically, I cannot figure out how to get the media browser to see the external drive I desperately need it to see.  Does anything about the attached photo make sense to you?  The drive I need to connect to is the LACIE 5T - it appears in the right hand pane, but I can't click on it there.  I need to to be recognized in the LOCAL DRIVES area on the left.  I've tried changing the drop menu from local drives to HOME DIRECTORY and that doesn't help.  I didn't have any of theses issues before my upgrade to Monterey, but I don't know why that would suddenly make a drive unreadable.  Please help if possible - I've basically wasted 2 full working days now trying to resolve these issues.

First you should do is not update your OS in the middle of a project. Or PP for that matter. If all else fails downgrade the OS.

but 1st check the permissions on the drive. Make sure everything is set to read and write

@Kyle Kramb I'm basically sort of always in the middle of at least one project - but I did have most things wrapped before I upgraded.  Due to the nature of my work, I often need to reopen and revise older projects - and that is when I'm having the issues.  Nothing it auto linking to the external drive where I store the clips for these projects.  I did check permissions on that drive and everything is set to "read and write".  It will let me relink - but only one by one manually if I turn off the "use media browser" box.

I get you. Updates sometimes break things. That has always been the case since the advent of the NLE.

Potentially obvious questions but... Is the drive properly formatted for mac? So Mac OS Journaled?

If you double click on the drive in that photo does it take you into where you can see the contents of it?

As another poster suggested you can check the security/permissions on the drive to make sure you have access to it and that it's read/write.

Is it a single disk drive or a RAID? I'm guessing it's the disk (I have a couple of those right now as well) but it's worth checking as I did recently have to troubleshoot some Lacie RAID issues on Mac.

Have you tried a preferences reset or reinstall?

@Phillip Harvey - Yep, drive is formatted for Mac and I'm pretty sure I have all the permissions set correctly.  (see attached image). No, if I double click on the drive from that first photo, it won't open or show me anything. I'm pretty sure it is single disk, not RAID - but not sure how to check that.  Either way, this external drive had been working perfectly for a while and then suddenly (again, after upgrade, but not even sure that is the main issue anymore) it just feels like Premiere doesn't want to talk to it, unless I turn off "use media browser to locate files" and then manually relink each clip individually. I have not re installed or reset preferences.  I'm really hoping I won't have to lose all of my current preferences - but if I do have to go that route, do you have a good link on how to do that? I suppose trying reinstall of everything is worth a shot, but it's weird that this is an issue I"m having in both Premiere and After Effects.

@Phillip Harvey - one more photo attachment - this is from when I'm inside encoder - once again, the LACIE Drive is in the right hand window and won't let me see into it. (no issues at all just opening the drive and viewing from Finder) I feel like before the LACIE would appear under the Macintosh HD and SSD_01 there under the "local drives" dropdown.  And now that it won't appear there, nothing will auto relink.

I would reset your preferences if your settings are backed up it should only take a few minutes to get everything set back up the way you want. Clear your cache. Also run Disk First Aid from Disk Utility

I would also point out the issue seems to have occurred when you updated your OS. Depending on when that drive was formatted maybe there is some low level conflict with the is and the drive that is showing up in PP. is it possible to dump your media to another drive? Can you move the project to a different computer and see if the issue persists?

I've been have a similar issue recently as well. The re-link seems to have become very finicky. I was working off transcodes that were mp4 and when I went back to the camera original mov files I had the same issue.

There used to be extra settings for re-linking automatically (Match timecode, match filename, match extension, etc.) have you tried exploring those?

YESSSSS. OMG. I as working through 100+ clips relinking then I searched for a solution and landed on this. Totally anti-logical but unclicking File Name enabled PP to relink 🙂 Happy Days. Thanks so much for this tip!
