Renaming Behavior in 2017

Community Beginner ,
Feb 01, 2017 Feb 01, 2017

Anyone having issue with the way the file renaming works within 2017?  In prior versions of PP, I was able to rename sequences quickly within the project window by selecting a sequence, hitting enter, pasting a copied house number, adding an incremental number, then hit "Enter" to move to the next sequence below still in renaming mode.  This was of great benefit, as I was able to apply house numbers to a large number of versions before transcoding export quite quickly.

ie,  To rename a number of sequences with a series of house numbers (UB10501-UB10505) I would do the following:

Select Sequence to change

<enter>

type "UB10501"

highlight and copy text "UB105"

<enter>

<ctrl-p> 02

<enter>

<ctrl-p> 03

<e

<ctrl-p> 04

<enter>

<ctrl-p> 05

Using this technique, I could rename a batch of 120 sequence versions (a regular occurrence in my workflow) in under 5 minutes.  NOW IN PP2017, if you paste a text string while in renaming mode, and hit enter, it no longer moves to the next sequence in renaming mode, it just commits the renaming and takes you out of renaming mode.

This may seem like a small behavior difference, but considering that our workflow (broadcast promotions) requires creation of multiple versions of the same spot,that must have a unique house number applied before transcoding, this is a deal breaker, as it will take much longer than previous to rename our sequences before export.

Anybody aware of a workaround or alternate way of doing things to get around this?  I'd like to move our group to 2017 to start taking advantage of team projects (getting us back to the collaborative functionality we had years ago with another editing solution), but as it stands, I will have to keep our team on 2015.4 until a fix is made.

Thanks in advance,

B.

It's working as it always has for me here, the way you want it to work.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone, though your PP2017 experience doesn't seem to match mine.

I had adobe support replicate the behavior on their end, but I'm interested if there are other users that aren't having the same issue.

Jim_Simon, can you confirm that it works as before when you PASTE a text string when renaming and hit enter?  It DOES seem to work as before if you just type in the rename field, but does not advance after hitting enter if any text is pasted into the renaming field.

I did test both ways, type and paste.  The behavior was the same.

I'm also on Windows 10.

Are you sure you're both talking about the same keys?  Because over here "enter", the key the OP is talking about--found on the numberpad, no longer works as described.

"Return", the key above right shift, allows you to continue down a list after pasting.  "Enter", does not.

On a PC here--Win 10.  For those of us who type and paste numbers, the loss of "Enter" as a form of carry forward, is nearly a deal breaker for 2017.

Go ahead, throw me a star.  "Solved" another one.

Please fix this so it behaves as it did previously.

Hey, you know what else would solve this?  One of my feature requests from approximately a billion years ago:

Integrate the batch renaming function from Bridge.  Would save all this insane paste, type, enter, paste, type, enter busywork in preparing multiple export sequences, etc.

But I guess that's taking a back seat to the "export directly to Tinder™" functionality they're hard at work on.

Some may like the way it currently behaves. The Enter key on the Numpad is an enter only key; while the "Enter" key on the keyboard is a Return key. It may be nice to have a distinction, since some may just want to rename one sequence and not have the next sequence opened. It can't be that difficult to move your thumb from the Numpad to the keyboard "Return" key, can it?

...and an even larger contingent might like the way it's behaved up until now, no?

The Enter key on the Numpad is an enter only key; while the "Enter" key on the keyboard is a Return key. It may be nice to have a distinction, since some may just want to rename one sequence and not have the next sequence opened.

I have no problem with a distinction--just reverse the behaviour so that inherently repetitive tasks (entering numbers after pasting) allow "enter" to continue, not "return", which is nowhere near the number pads.  For crying out loud--that's *why* they put an enter key in the numpad--so that you don't have to interrupt your workflow to move your hand to hit return!  It's designed specifically so that you can do it one-handed and continue working!

It can't be that difficult to move your thumb from the Numpad to the keyboard "Return" key, can it?

Wow--there's a cheerleader for everything it seems.  Why don't we arbitrarily change copy / paste to be control K / control L?  Would you enjoy that?  Or would it be "too difficult" to move your fingers a few more inches?

Ugh.

Hey CloudDisaster, burner21X

The problem here looks like a result of the more general problem we discussed here:

Where did all the numeric-keypad shortcuts go in Premiere CC 2017?

I was told when we were discussing the above, the the default functionality for the Numeric Keypad with NumLock off would be restored in a future upgrade. They didn't make it in 2017.02, so maybe the next one?

It would be nice also, if we had the option to program the numeric pad separately with numlock off.

Wow.  That's not my workflow, but as you said--having 17 keys you use daily suddenly vanish must be driving you nuts.  I lost one (1) and I'm not impressed.  To be told "yah, we'll get back to eventually turning that back on" is disheartening.

These are the times when it feels like we're the beta testers...

I do see that behavior as well.  (On my keyboard, both keys are marked Enter, but I typically don't use the NumPad key.)

So it appears there is user option here.  Use the normal key for the old behavior, use the NumPad key for the new behavior.
