Rendering Help

I know I've been posting about this but I really need help. I said in "Render Time", some of my scenes are rendering for many hours and aren't even 1/4 finished. These aren't entire sequences, just 4-5 minute scenes. The effect I'm using is keying with After Effects. But it shouldn't be taking this long, should it? Also, when I cancel the render, Adobe stops responding and I have to Force Quit on my Mac. Then when I open it back up, what has already been rendered needs rendering again. Help!

Two things that makes the export take a long time.

Upscaling and Dynamic Link.

(Rendering means making preview files).

Dont upscale and make intermediate file from Ae and put that on the timeline.

I'm not upscaling. I'm just cutting in PP and sending to AE to Key.

In addition, what is the actual resolution of your original (not re-converted) source video? If your original was really 4096x2160, you might have downscaled your video in After Effects to 1920x1080, and then when you imported that After Effects composition into Premiere Pro, the timeline got set automatically to that lower resolution, and then you tried to export that as 4096x2160. Well, what you actually did was perform an image-degrading double conversion, which astronomically increased the rendering time while degrading or even ruining the image quality at the same time.

Premiere Pro cannot circumvent such multiple resolution conversions - period. It is "non-destructive" in the sense that your original video file is retained after export. Destructive NLEs always overwrite all original footage with re-exported ones no matter what.

Since I shot in 1920x1080, then why is it taking so long?

Simple. Your export settings are set to 4096x2160, and it takes much, much longer to export to that resolution than it does to 1920x1080. And by default Adobe will upscale that 1920x1080 image to a 4096x2160 image, leaving small black borders at the left and right edges of the frame. All that takes even more time.

Unfortunely, there is no good way to export a 1080p image as 4k without all that processing, unless you intend to have a very small windowed image within the larger frame. To eliminate most of that processing, set the export resolution to 1920x1080, and then check back.

You responded before I edited my post. You have to make sure that both the project resolution and the export resolution are exactly the same (in this case, 1920x1080). Otherwise, Adobe Premiere will automatically re-scale the video by default, increasing the rendering time substantially.

So your steps would be like this:

1. Export your edited timeline just like RjL said; 1920x1080 @ 24 fps. Use a high-quality codec like ProRes 422 or Cineform.
2. Import that new clip into Ae for keying.
3. If you still need to edit/tweak the video, export a high quality file from Ae using the same codec you used to export from Pr. Import it back into Pr and finish editing. Export from Pr using the format and codec you need to deliver to the client.
4. If you're done with editing the video, export from Ae using the format and codec that you need for delivery to the client.

Jeff, is the problem the export from Pr to Ae? I've been using the settings you suggested. Or is the issue when I go from Ae back to Pr. BTW, when I export from Pr, do I just click Replace With AE Composition? Thanks.

Try File>Export>Media for exporting from Pr. I want to try to get dynamic link out of the equation by eliminating replace with Ae composition.

From what I can see is that in your Export Settings, you have chosen the Adobe Stock 4K DCI preset. Why is that, considering that your source material is 1080p?

I'm not sure how that happened or where you are seeing that. I'm I'm having all sorts of issues now.. I just did a green screen key in ar and when it comes back into premiere it's not transparent.
