Rendering super slow

Hi there,

I need some help please! I'm using Premiere with on iMac 3.4GHz IC i5, 8GB 2400 Mhz DDR4...and it's a complete disaster...not even my old pc was so slow to do the rendering.

Any advise to improve the performances of this machine? Thanks

Hi Paolo,

If you are working with 4K footage, this system is beneath the system requirements for smooth operation. I would say, your system is OK for 1080p, however.

 

For 4K, I recommend a more robust CPU with more cores for faster rendering and exporting times. A GPU with around 8 GB VRAM, and 32+ GB RAM. For doing 4K with your system, use proxies to edit with, like 1080p ProRes LT/Proxy presets. You can also deploy smart rendering, rendering as you go, to take the heavy lifting off the CPU when you export. I would do that until you can afford a new computer for your new 4K workflow.

    There are some Macs that work quite well. I'm a total PC dude, so for better advice there someone like Kevin Monahan, a product support staffer "here" and long experienced editor/colorist/trainer besides total Mac-Dude would have better advice.

    The two versions of Premiere currently available are 2019 and 2020. 2019 does have lower hardware needs for some things, it might work for you better than 2020.

    Hi Neil,

    unfortunately I'm already using Premiere Pro CC 2019 V13.1.1 ...it looks there's no way out.

    Is there a model of Mac that can cope with Premiere, or I have to buy a pc?

    Does Final Cut work better on the iMac?

    That looks like a four-core CPU? Which is very low for trying to run Premiere. And with only 8GB of RAM, that's barely enough to open the program. Even 16GB of RAM is pretty low these days. I think that may just not be suited for working with Premiere in newer versions. Sadly.

      I bought this iMac as they told me it was the most powerful model at that time (two years ago) and it was perfect for video editing...now what shall I do? I've heard that I cannot add more RAM to this computer.

      Can I install older Premiere versions?

      It would be helpful for us to understand the issue better if we get the following details:

      • Which version of Premiere Pro are you using? https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-find-the-exact-version-of-premiere-pro-you-re-using/td-p/8241053
      • What OS version is installed on your machine?
      • What kind of media files are you working with?
      • Did you apply any effects on your files?
      • Which option is selected under File > Project Settings > General > Renderer?

       

      Your computer is not very powerful to run Premiere Pro 2020 smoothly. It meets the minimum requirement to run Premiere Pro.

      Also, you may try to switch your Renderer from Software Only to Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration and see if that improves the performance.

      thanks for your reply.
       
      At the moment I’m using Premiere Pro CC 2019 V13.1.1. and I didn’t want to upgrade it as last time I did it the rendering went even slower.
      - OS 10.13.6
      - I’m working with footages filmed in 4K
      - Mainly dissolves and few slow motions.
       
      The link you sent me with the requirement doesn’t work.
      I’ve changed the rendering to Mercury PE but it doesn’t render the entire selected area; the rest of the project remains un-rendered.
       
      What shall I do? Is there something I can do to improve my iMac performances?
       
      I was looking on your website to connect with the support to have someone accessing my computer but I couldn’t find the link…has this service been removed?
       
      I hope you’ll be able to help me…

      As Neil mentioned, 8GB of RAM isn't enough for 4K workflows.

       

      In order to render the entire sequence, mark an In point at the beginning of the sequence and an Out point at the end of the sequence. Then go to Sequence > Render In to Out.
