Roughen Edges on cropped video

Community Beginner ,

Hey Everyone,

I started playing around more with the roughen edges effect. How do I apply the effect to cropped video? Let's say I want to crop my 16:9 video to look more vertical and I want to round the edges.

There are a couple of different ways to roughen edges on a cropped video in Premiere Pro, depending on how you're cropping:

  • If you're using the Crop effect, add the Roughen Edges effect below the Crop Effect in the Effect Control Window.
  • If you're using a mask with the Opacity effect, replace this with the Alpha Adjust effect. Tick Inverted and Invert Alpha. Then, add the Roughen Edges effect below this effect.
  • If you're only using Roughen Edges to round the edges, you might find it easier to follow this method in a video tutorial.

Hi, I can't find a way to get around how to apply round edges to the cropped video. I am using Premiere Pro v25.3 (2025). The round edges would only apply to the video edges BEFORE being cropped and hence the edges were not looking rounded. I have tried using mask as well. The same result. Anyone have the same problem?

Very much appreciated if you can share your way(s) to make round edges to a cropped video.

Draw a shape, go into the Properties panel and set the round corners.

Add your video in the Properties Panel and Mask with Shape.

If you want roughen edges put that at the top of the stack.

If your clip is very long, use a subclip instead.
