Same animation file w premultiplied alpha renders differently in Premiere Pro than in After Effects

Question

I'm on Windows 10. I have a UHD Quicktime file using the "Animation" codec with a premultiplied alpha channel.

When I place the file over bg footage in After Effects, it looks the way it's supposed to: a very subtle soft glow around the text. When I place the exact same file over the same bg footage in Premiere Pro, the glow is much stronger and more harsh. (See screenshots below.) I've checked the interpretation of the file in both applications, and it is set to "premultiplied" in each.

Why is this happening, and is there anything I can do to make the glow look correct in Premiere?

Try turning off 'composite in linear colour' in the sequence settings

You can confirm the Alpha type (Straight or Premultiplied) in the Properties and then set the Interpret Footage dialog box accordingly.

If exported from After Effects using the Render Queue and the Lossless with Alpha Output Module Template, the alpha should show as Premultiplied and should display correctly in Premiere Pro with the default Alpha Interpretation.

If exported from After Effects using the Adobe Media Encoder Queue with the Apple ProRes4444 with Alpha preset, the alpha should show as Straight and should display correctly in Premiere Pro with the default Alpha Interpretation.

If your footage with alpha is not appearing as expected in Premiere Pro, the workaround is to either import the Comp directly into your Premiere Pro Sequence or to render that footage over the background on the After Effects side without an alpha (of course, this leaves less flexibility later in Premiere Pro).
