Scanning clips for Closed Captioning with "include captions on import" deselected

Is there a way to scan a clip already in my Project for embedded closed captioning without making sure "include captions on import" in the preferences is selected? I keep that preference off because Premiere sometimes takes too long scanning clips for embedded CC. however, sometimes I'd like to just have Premiere look at 1 clip and parse out the CC. is this possible?

also....sometimes after enabling the option and re-importing the clip, Premiere fails to scan for CC. i'm assuming its because it has already scanned it and I need to delete the media cache. Is there any other way around this?

I see no way that PR will do this.

Workaround: Import the clip again with "import captions" on. Drag to the new icon. Captions will populate a captions track. If you decide you want them, trim the sequence as needed, then copy paste to the captions to the sequence where you want them.

Importing the clip again and then using replace clip (for the clip without captions already in a sequence) does not work.

In my limited testing, I didn't have an issue with the clips coming in without captions.

Working in broadcast, taking in a 1-2 hour live clip with "import captions" enabled takes a great deal of time. Hence the reason I keep it turned off. When on, importing multiple clips with CC brings Premiere to its knees. I dont always need the CC.  It would be nice to have an option to selectively have Premiere "scan" a clip for embedded captions, as opposed to all or nothing approach. And even after selecting the "import captions" option and re-importing the clip again into the same project, Premiere fails to re-scan the clip again.

However, after deleting my media cache, and re-importing then the captions pop up.

I would love to have the option to scan each clip when I want...much like the "generate audio waveforms" command.

I get it. That would be a feature request.

What type of files do you have? I wondered about something that could extract the subtitles faster. You could then pull in just the subtitles you want.

SubtitleEdit won't do it for mov or mxf op1a, the only ones PR creates embeds for.
