Setting/keying frames in Image Sequence?

New Here ,
Aug 02, 2023 Aug 02, 2023

Is there any way to take an image sequence and just set a specific frame with a key in the effect control?

For example.  Say I rendered out a character with 50 different poses.  So each frame is a different pose.  Instead of having the sequence just play from 1-50.  I could set a set a frame and hold it till I set the next key to switch the frame.

Currently the way im doing this is importing each frame seperatly and then adding that frame to the sequence when i want to play it.  Unfortunately this makes the sequence become very cludder and messy pretty quickly.

This may be a bit clunky, but the following should work for you:

  1. Add the frames in as an Image sequence (assuming they are numbered sequentially, choose the first frame and check the "Image Sequence" checkbox in the Import dialog before clicking Open)
  2. Place the media in a sequence and step through it frame by frame; if you want to add a frame hold, right-click the media and choose "Insert Frame Hold Segment" (NOTE: it seems to do 2s by default; I checked and the Timeline preferences seem to have no effect on the default duration)
  3. Continue stepping through for however long you want the frame hold to last, the Ctrl-K (or Cmd-K on a Mac) to cut the media
  4. Premiere Pro will automatically select the latter half of the cut media; Shift-Del to ripple delete it
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 as necessary

Hope this helps...  Assuming you don't want to hold most of the frames this should be cleaner and quicker than what you are doing now.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response!  Unforinitly that's not what I'm looking for.  Idk if I explained it very well in my original post so I made a quick video with an example of what I'm tring to do.  I'm assuming its a long shot that premiere can even do this.  But I'd figure it doesnt hurt to ask.

Sorry for the audio btw.  I sound a bit congested in it I think...

Ah!  Your video makes it much clearer what you are trying to do.  I'm not aware of a way to do that easily in Premiere Pro, but... I have another (possibly bad) idea for you to try!

Create a new sequence and add all your frames to it as layers; stretch them all out so they are as long as the clip you are intending to make.  See the Multicam attachment for what this might look like.

Right-click the sequence in the Project pane and choose New Sequence from Clip.  In this new sequence, right click the clip (sequence) in the track and choose Multicamera > Enable.  Now click the wrench in the Program monitor and enable Multicamera.  Now you should see thumnails of all the "frames" (tracks) from the multicam sequence.  The number keys on your keyboard are shortcuts to the tracks; you can press them while playing the timeline (or click on the thumbnails in the Program monitor) and it will automatically create edit points - see Multicam Sequence attachment.

For more precise control, manually step through the timeline with arrow keys and Ctrl-K to make splits where you want the frames to change.  Pressing a number key or clicking a thumbnail will change the selected segment to use that layer/frame.

Hope this helps!
