Sound keeps coming from speakers instead of headphones in PPro

I’m currently on a Mac (Monterey) with a Blackmagic Artist DNxIO connected to a Palmer Monicon passive monitor controller. Whenever I change my settings to headphones (Bose QC45 via Bluetooth), Premiere ignores this. The settings clearly state that the headphones are selected (no input), but the sound keeps coming out of the speakers. On the OS level, that’s not an issue; sound comes from the headphones. Premiere also recognized a change on the OS level and promptly implements it (when "system standard" is active) but ignoring it all the same.

I also found a fix: Unplugging the monitor controller. But that is a tedious extra step for something I have to do quite often during a work day. Does anyone know what’s happening here?

I've never used bluetooth devices with Premiere before, but how are you adjusting the volume on your headphones with the controller when you are connecting directly to the headphones in Premiere?

I use the OS' slider. It's not optimal, I just reeeeally need that noise canceling sometimes (workplace can get busy). I also have regular tethered headphones I that I can plug directly into the Artist box and control with its knob.
