Splitted Video audio timeline explained

Hey ,

can someone explain the advantage of having a splittend timeline? Audio and Video Splitted and also scaling in different ways. One is scaled up and one is scaled down.
ok if you use a shortcut it's not important.
but sometimes you just do it with the mouse because you are just there with the cursor.
but I don't understand the meaning or magic behind having the timeline splitted.
to me this makes more confusion then it helps.

is there a editing purpose or workflow where you need a splitted timeline?
and if not, can we discuss what to remove that we don't need any more?
and if there is a deeper purpose behind, can we have a unified timeline ? Just for the people that don't need this clonky feature.
i can not tell you how much time I spend on rearranging the timeline because of this feature.

it makes me nuts.
how about the rest of you.
are you all enjoying this feature?

then pls tell me the secret behind, because I am not getting it.
or is there some script coder out there?
i would pay for not having this feature....

I think I understand now ... you want to be able to resize say V2 and A2 together if they are 'linked' video/audio media. And/or resize all video/audio tracks together?

Is that correct?

That's probably a useful thing to be able to do for certain situations. Well worth a UserVoice request.

There are always it seems so settable keyboard shortcuts that get missed, like the ones here ... but as always, more options would be more better.

I've watched the videos, looked at your images, and still ... I've no clue what you mean by splitted timeline. Of course, I've never worked in Avid, and being on PCs, never been able to try FXP in any version either. In all the samples, there are V1 and going up in the upper part of the image, and A1 and going down in the lower part.

Do you mean the ability to set the Video track heights separately from the audio track heights?

Hey Neil,

can you make a short video, where I can see of which flexibility you are talking about?

I will do some graphics to show what I mean with "this is not locgical"

By that I mean:

The way Video and Audio layer scale when you use the mouse pointer is not intuitive.

It should work the same in the Video Layer and in the Audio Layer.

At the moment Video Layer scale if you pick them at the top

And audio Layer scale when you pic them at the bottom.

This behaviour is not as I would expect it.

And I am curious about the splitted timeline advantages you are showing us.

And If so: why can´t we make them shy or unvisible? So we can concentrate on either Video or Audio.

Or can we?

I love learning new things. And maybe I am wrong.

But I would expect that the Video and Audio Layer behave in the same way regardeing their behaviour of scaling

with the mouse as a tool.

Most of the time I use the presets that I saved, but in some situations I am faster with the mouse or it´s more convenient to use the mouse.

I see what you mean. I thought you meant something like FCP X's magntic timeline, or even the way Premiere Rush works, which don't have tracks. I'm always in favor of reducing UI clutter, but the best way to get your ideas in front of the team is to file a feature request on the UserVoice site. you bet I did that !
i just wanted to see if other editors are experiencing the same frustration as I do.
If so the app should change.

if no, then I have to adapt.
simple as that..

I am a fan of "how do you deal with that"

i helped to refine the Avid Mc for many years.

But as I am using AE very intensively , I had so switch and a lot of the people that I know from the early 90ties switched.
but we have fought so hard to get the best composer we needed and now I am sitting in front of a software that has evolved completely different and it feels just clunky sometimes.
i kept silent for many years but I can't stay silent anymore.
I get every month a bill from adobe and I deserve a more stable workhorse that I can Suite to my demands.
the alternative is to switch to something that is free.
so editors of the world , who are you and where are you.
the most clicked topic in the user voice is get the Premiere to Linux .
so this is our main problem?

Hi Peter, the biggest reason to want this functionality is flexibility. Take a look at the attached screenshot; I have eight video tracks and 11 audio tracks. Being able to scale each track individually lets me focus on what I'm currently working on, and it lets me ignore what's not important at the moment. I'm trying out four different music tracks for this cut, but I can collapse the ones I'm not currently interested (although in this screenshot they're all currently collapsed because I'm not paying attention to that right now).

Being able to separate your audio from your video is crucial for editing. Maybe you need to take a word from one take and put it in another, or maybe you need to make cuts to audio or add a cross fade to a clip when you don't want to add a transition to the corresponding video clip. There are plenty of reasons for wanting this robust timeline workflow, but those are just a couple small ones. There is no way to change this, and no script or tool that is able to alter the Timeline's behavior.

Have you looked into the Premiere Rush desktop app? It has a unified timeline like you're looking for. It gives you the ability to expand or collapse the audio without separating it from the video, and the most recent update just added the ability to separate the audio.

So how did I edit video and audio in Avid MC in a unified timeline?

I have worked with many applications and non of these app have had a splitted timeline.

Which makes it hard to work with.
