Track matte key in Premiere Pro 2022 not working

I created a lovely track matte key animation as part of a transition in Adobe Premiere Pro 2021, now that I've updated to 2022 it's stopped working.  Please can you fix this ASAP.

I've had to re-create this in After Effects but it just does not look the same and I can't revert my project back to Premiere Pro 2021 too which is also really annoying.

Correct answer Ann Bens

This is mine, in the preview is the way I want it to look but in the work area it is not transparent

I found that changing the stacking order fixed it for me.  In the attached grabs, I'm trying to apply a red tint only to the (alpha'ed) illustration of the woman, against a green background.  With the Track Matte Key effect *below* the Shape parameter, it incorrectly applies the red to the whole frame.  With the Shape parameter *above* the Track Matte Key effect, the red (which I've got dialed in at about 95% opacity) correctly tints the woman, and not the bg.

Did you try the Mask with Shape feature within the Graphic by adding the png to the graphic.

Secondary issue at end of post.   I can confirm that scaling was my main issue.  Editing a 4K clip on an HD timeline won't track if the clip is scaled down.  So just scale it 100%, adjust your canvas to 50% to see the entire image, do the keying and tracking then scale the clip back down to 50%.  The keyframes stayed in place and it worked fine... except the tracking always seems to stop at about 90% finished and won't go any further.  Working on it.....

Wow, this is super messed up, that matte tracking fails when the image is scaled in any way.  Srsly, Premiere?

That's a pretty basic set of functions that MUST be able to work together.

Just another trademark counter-productive Premiere workaround.  Can't wait to get of this project so I can go back to AVID, where these annoying bad surprises don't happen - on my dime!  Arghhhh

Same problem here! it doesn't work when I resize one of the clips. It's like a bug

It is not enogh resizing it. Don't remember if you put it in a precomp with the right size (100%) and then scale the file in that was enogh. Otherwise Renee it out in the correct format as your project and re apply the effect then it should work. Hope it helps

I'm having a problem with Track Matte Key. When I select the video layer that I want to use as a matte, the graphic completely disappears.

I'm working on a MacMini M1, macOS Monterey in the latest version of Premiere Pro. I've confirmed that all of the assets are the same resolution, and none of them have been scaled. I've also rebooted my computer (multiple times) and uninstalled/reinstalled Premiere. I've also tried working with Rosetta checked and unchecked. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do here but you want to but the track matte on the fill layer and then select the matte layer. Try nesting the glitter layer, looks like it has an alpha channel, not sure if that might confuse things.

Sorry for the lack of specificity. The glitter layer is the fill layer, and the text is the matte. I applied Track Matte Key to the glitter layer and selected the text (video 3) as the matte. That's when the text disappears. I tried nesting the glitter layer and no luck.

To revert projects back to previously working versions, try this:

1. create a copy of your project file (DO NOT WORK ON THE ORIGINAL PROJECT FILE)

2. right click on it and open with 7zip(you can install it for free)

3. select open archive in 7zip

4. right click the file and click on Edit

5. go to line number 4 and change the last number in the line (version = "x") to = "1"

save the file and open

Now, to avoid this in the future:

Turn off automatic updates from Creative Cloud app.

Never update Premiere Pro when still in the middle of projects.

You can always have 2 or more versions of Premiere Pro, so get

your deadlines done on the working versions and test fresh projects on newer versions.

I am having this same issue with the Set Matte. I am trying to use the matte on a background video clip (animated logo). The matte works, but the video clip (animated logo) no longer plays. I tried all of Neil's suggestions: creating a new project in 2022 and deleting all cached files, but still having the issue.

I am so frustrated with the frequency with which I run into bugs lately in Adobe's software. I would just use earlier versions of the software if my clients and coworkers weren't also working off the latest updates.

Please help!!

Sorry for the multiple replies; I'm not seeing how to delete or edit my previous ones.

Set Matte is an obselete effect

The Set Matte effect was originally developed for After Effects. It is included in Premiere Pro only to provide compatibility with projects created in earlier versions of After Effects that use the Set Matte effect.

V2 visibility is turned off.

If the logo reveal clip has a alpha channel you do not need to use a matte effect.

This exact project is 400mb so i did a wetransfer https://we.tl/t-RyGbn6snBo it have everything in it as I set it up in a separate project from my actual project

Found the issue:

Track matte works just fine but cannot handle scaling and different resolutions.

Have to go now. Send you the project later this day.

Much agreed...  Adobe has really fallen off the wagon with the functionality of their apps.  It doesn't help when so many of the Community professionals are never having these issues.  Not very reassurring.

The reason so many of the ACPs aren't having these issues illustrates the HUGE frustration for so many issues in Premeire right now. Perfectly.

Which is ... the variability of performance. Most users aren't having any of the weird issues that some are. But there are so many users using them, that even if a relative few users have them, that's still in total numbers rather a large group. Even if it's say less than 1%.

And I've been on the short end myself of course ... most of us have. So total sympathy about having this crud hit you. And the others reading this. It's frustrating to me that I can't replicate things that others face.

So keep posting here, and especially keep posting buggy behavior data on their UserVoice system, as that is the actual input portal for both the engineer's system and the all-importan M&E people above the teams who make the overall decisions.

I've noted that BM's Resolve is also trying to be a Swiss-Army knife app, one size for everything/everyone/every workflow ... and from working with it, and following/participating on both the LGG and BM forums, they've having more of the bugs and variablity between user things also.

I think it may be endemic with the be-all-for-everyone approach.

Having the same issue. Track matte key with a black and white alpha mask on it does not work anymore, this is really annoying.

Works fine here:

what exactly does not work.

Post screenshot matte, effect controls and timeline.

Bumped into the same issue with the 2022 update.  When can we get a fix for this Trak Matte problem?  I have had to export separate layers and recreate in 2019 to add the track Matte Key.  Help

I have no troubles with the Track Matte effect in projects created in the 2022 version. So ... this would seem to be an issue from project migration. So, some troubleshooting questions seem useful.

- If you create a project in 2022, and add the Track Matte effect, does it work properly?

- When migrating the project, did you create a new project in 2022, then from MediaBrowser, select the old project file and Import the assets to the new project file? This is by far the safest, most reliable way to migrate. "Opening" an old version project in a new version is prone to issues.

- When opening the project in 2022, did you first delete all cache files? That's another area that is rife with troubles.
