Using an adjustment layer to create a mask

I am trying to create a mask using an adjustment layer.

The image I have attached shows 3 layers

The top layer is the adjustment layer, I have created a mask on this layer

The middle layer contains words, these words start small and then grow in size

The bottom layer has a picture of a box. I am trying to use the mask on the asjustement layer to match the edges of the box

When the words grow/scale to a size they begin to exceed the edges of the box/mask I woud like the part of the words outside the box to not be visible.

I have not been able to use an adjustment layer to mask anything.

Is what I am asking possible? Am I making a mistake?

Like Neil said, you do not need to use an adjustment layer to achieve this.

Instead, just type the words you want to appear, position it in the middle of the mirror.

In Effect Controls, twirl down Text and create a mask that will cover the extend until the bounds of the mirror, meaning that if you enlarge the text it will not be visible beyond the mask.

Next, scroll down until you see Transform. In the scale option, at the beginning of your text layer, set a keyframe and change the scale value to 0. Drag the playhead forward to wherever you wish the text to dissappear and set another keyframe. The maximum value allowed for scale is 4000. This may mean that a portion of the text is still visible.

You may solve this by backing up a few frames and set a keyframe at Opacity a few options down and make the text dissappear by going from 100 to 0 in a few frames.

Then, copy the text on your timeline and simply change the words for the next line of text.

Hope this helps.

You don't need an AL to do that, you can extend a graphic over as long as you want, and use that for your text and your masked area. You can stack graphics of course on mulitple tracks.

You seem to be complicating things quite a bit. I don't understand why you're using the AL to mask the text, rather than the normal process of creating 'boxes' to use for masking within the EGP panel's normal setup.

Create a box the size you need in the EGP, don't give it any 'content' or fill color. Put it above the text in the EGP layer stack, and animate the box and/or text as you need to mask the text. Very simple, really.

And ALs are not the same as a 'regular' clip, they're a place to hold effects to be processed on the sequence. So masks do not work well if at all inside them.

Thanks,

My actual need is more complicated than what I posted, I chose to create the simplest of scenerios so I could articulate the problem in the shortest possible way.

The AL will sit above many clips in the video I am producing. I have made a short animated gif that should better illustrate what I am trying to do.

Is it possible to create an adjustment layer to mask out multiple clips below it?
