Why Isn't Premier Linking ALL Missing Clips?

I'm  trying to open existing projects after a new HD install.

ALL of my clip/content is on the same external drive they've always been on.

When I open a project, I get the "missing media" message window.  So... I go and locate a clip manually, and EVEVERYTHING ELSE that was missing, is found and has a checkmark next to it.

Then I hit cancel to close the "find media" window and then my project loads AND ALL THE CLIPS ARE MISSING AND EVERYTHING IS OFFLINE/CAN'T BE FOUND.

WHY?  I just found them all in the locate media pop up window, and they were found, and had checkmarks.

So then... I go into the timeline and click on a few missing clips.  I RELINK them to media manually, BUT IT ONLY POPULATES THAT SPECIFIC CLIP I JUST MANUALLY LOCATED.  Why is there NO automatic linking of all the other clips... when I have that option selected???

Do I really have to go in, by hand, and link clip after clip, each one, individually, hundreds of clips one after the other?  That will take me a good ten hours or more.

This program waste so much of my time...smh

There are a few things that could be causing problems...  First, Never easy to troubleshoot premiere problems from a distance so please tell us your system specs: OS version, Premiere version, amount of RAM, Hardware specs including graphics card and if you have any 3rd party plugins installed for Premiere... Also, sequence settings and clip properties can also help. Although you can throw almost any format into premiere, some formats can be problematic, particularly on an underpowered system.

Do you use any "resesrved" characters in file or folder names?  These include slashes, asterisks, periods, etc

https://www.computerhope.com/jargon/r/resechar.htm

I was wrangling a complex documentary project that was having serious problems for well over a year.  The director/editor refused to allow me the time to dig into what was going on as I was alway able to get the project working again... until I couldn't...  Turns he had used slashes to add dates to folders...  ABSOLUTELY A BAD IDEA.  When I told him we needed to rename all these folders replacing the slashes with underscores...  he fired me...

And there is actually a character limit to the file path...  It's pretty long, but if you have folders within folders within folders within folders, there can be problems.

And make sure you have sufficient empty space on your startup and media drives.  A minimum of 10% on all drives and 20% on your startup drive...

I have the same problem as yours and have found a workaround, until adobe fixed the bug

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/quot-relink-other-automatically-quot-doesn-t-work-u...

Basically, you just have to untick the  'File Extension' option on the bottom left when you try to link the medias.
