Write-on effect is now obsolete. What is the replacement?

Is there a replacement effect for write-on?  

It seems like there is now a huge list of obsolete video effects.  In general, where should I look to find replacements.  My sense is that the obsolete folder is growning much faster than new effects are being added to the system.  I feel like I must be missing something.  Any tips would be most appreciated.

I agree. I would appreciate a full list somewhere of the obsolete effects and the new way to accomplish the goals.
