XDCam ingest gives "MXF Read Error"

I am trying to ingest clips from an XDCam disc.  I was lead to believe that Premiere could ingest this stuff directly.  I am using the PDW-U1 deck and KG media.  The drive mounts on the desktop of my Mac and the directory is recognized as XDCam when I view it in Media Browser.  From there all I get is red frames and MXF read error messages.  I know the media is good because I can view it in VLC and have tried demos of other apps and codecs for XDCam and they all work.  I have also tried copying the entire XDCam disc directory to my hard drive and I get the same results in Premiere but the other apps work.  I am hoping for a simple solution for which was my intent in purchasing the Adobe products.  Even when I got the codec for QuickTime to read these file, they still will not read in Premiere.

Just to add to my confusion, I tried another Mac and PDW-U1.  At first this one would not mount the disc on the desktop.  I installed the latest driver from Sony.  The most recent one I could find is on the Sony Japan site.  After the install, the disc mounts and Premiere loads the data correctly.  I also tried using the first PDW drive and several different discs on the second machine.  Everything I threw at it works.  Then I tried a third computer.  Installed the same driver and it would mount but still would not work in Premiere.  The Premiere, OS and driver versions are all the same.  Then I tried a virgin OS install + drivers and still would not work in Premiere.

I have looked through the forums and most of the similar issues are from older versions of Premiere and OS.  Seems this issue went away with Adobe updates.  I am at a loss as to why I have this issue.

Adding more info the chaos....

I installed PP CS6 (the oldest version I could find) and it works.  Installed PP CS7 and it works but beach balls when scrolling through content.  I uninstalled PP 2018 and reinstalled the same and it still doesn't work.    Any suggestions would be helpful as I am running out of ideas.  I'm going to go back to banging the rocks together.

PrPro can work with that media, but first upload the entire disc folder structure to a drive connected to the computer, not off the camera card ...

Did that.  Still have one computer that will work with it and two that will not.  The one that works with the media will work with it even if I do not copy it to the local drive.  The mystery continues.

We used XDCam Transfer to re-wrap the MXF files to MOV files.  I know you may ask "Why?" but that is too much conversation for now.  My question to R Neil Haugen would be this:

Do the latest versions of PPro as well as AME not work with XDCam video OR did XDCam Transfer create 32 bit QT files when it re-wrapped to MOV?

One of the above must be true because we simply installed the previous version of both PPro and AME and our XDCam files work perfectly.  Just trying to find a solution!! Thank you!!!

Can you post or PM me a link to download an XDCam MOV file that you are having problems with?

Rick,

Could you please provide the following information:

  • Exact OS version
  • Exact version of Premiere Pro you are using

Also, are you clearing your media cache between tests? This can be helpful in tracking down this type of issue.

The media cache can be found here:

Mac: /Users/%username%/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common

Win: \Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\

More details can be found here:

One other thing that I could use some help understanding: The original issue is dealing with the original XDCAM disc and you are seeing an MXF read error in Premiere. How do the QuickTime files you posted fit in to this equation? I want to make sure I'm looking at the right thing.

El Capitan 10.11.6

PPro 12.0.0

We did not clear media cache for any of the back and forth "PPro Revision Tests" on the same machine nor on a second machine we tested.  I was not the author of this original thread. I came to this thread while looking for solutions and added my issue hoping to help find an answer if it was related since it included XDCAM.  We loaded our discs and used XDCAM Transfer program to rewrap to QT MOV to our media server, placed the discs on a shelf in our vault and created a 12.0.0 project using the MOV files. When we jumped on the update we found a question mark icon and could only relink audio, with video being offline.

Ok, thanks for the clarity. I'll try out your workflow on my end (the details and sample files really help!) and see if I can repro.

Update for you: I now have a repro case and we are investigating. Thank you for helping to narrow this one down as it has been eluding us till today.

Thanks SO much for coming on and picking this up! Although I've not had this, it's something that other users here have had issues with, so getting this to the Team in a way to really diagnose it is so good to see.

One more update as I've found a potential solution here: This problem so far only seems to occur on macOS 10.11. Upgrading to 10.12 or higher looks to solve the issue. If you do this, be sure to clear your media cache before opening the project in your updated OS.

The media cache can be found here:

Mac: /Users/%username%/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common

Win: \Users\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\

Yes, Thank you very much!  We are still using macOS 10.11 for another specific software which will not run on 10.12.  I will inform the powers above me about this solution. Thank you again!
