Add Track Naming on the Premiere Pro Timeline

Community Beginner ,
Jun 19, 2025 Jun 19, 2025

I'm genuinely surprised that even after so many years, Premiere Pro still doesn’t allow users to rename video or audio tracks directly on the timeline.

It would be a fantastic productivity boost to be able to label tracks – for example:
:studio_microphone:️ Voice Over
:headphone: Sound FX
:musical_score: Music
:video_camera: B-roll, etc.

This feature already exists in Adobe Audition, where you can rename each track to organize your session more clearly. It would be great to see the same logic applied to Premiere.

This would improve workflow clarity, especially in large projects with lots of layered content.

Hi @brazilt29521440 good news – you can do this!

First, make your tracks taller (drag the dividing line or Shift+Scroll on the track header), and you'll see the names appear:

Right click > Rename to change the name.

You can also right click > Customize and drag around the elements in the header so that the track name is shown even at the small sizes:

I hope that helps!

Hello, you can ue markings on the timeline, or on the each media on the timeline, I'm doing like that and it's having the same effect. I think changeing the name of the media will delay the work of the program, cus it have to identify each video, if you using with the external disk.

Adding Markers:
  • To a source clip:
Open the clip in the Source Monitor, position the playhead where you want the marker, and either select Marker > Add Marker or press the M key.

  • To the timeline:
Position the playhead on the timeline where you want to add the marker, right-click on the timeline ruler, and select Add Marker or press M.

Types of Markers:
  • Comment Markers: For general annotations and notes.
  • Chapter Markers: For creating chapter points in your video, useful for DVD or Blu-ray authoring.
  • Segmentation Markers: For defining specific segments or sections within your video.
  • Web Link Markers: For adding URLs directly to your video.
  • Numbered Markers: For sequential referencing and navigation.
  • Unnumbered Markers: For general marking and navigation.

Managing Markers:
  • Navigation:
You can easily navigate to specific markers using the Marker Panel or by right-clicking in the timeline and selecting "Go to Next Marker" or "Go to Previous Marker".

  • Customization:
Markers can be customized with names, comments, and colors to enhance organization.

  • Duration:
You can set a duration for markers to visually represent their length on the timeline.

  • Import/Export:
You can export and import markers to and from spreadsheet formats (CSV or XML) for sharing or collaboration.
