Better project management

LEGEND ,
Jan 24, 2023 Jan 24, 2023
We often need to collect the project for transfering or archiving purposes. When collecting - all assets will be collected in one folder which is a bit messy....it would be great if files can be collected in 2 ways:
- following the Premiere project bin structure
Or
- following the folder structure on hard drive
That would help us a lot in keeping the collected projects organized.

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

It is one of many areas we are looking into.

This would be really helpful. Final Cut did it, Davinci does it. Let's not fall behind with such an easy fix.

I don't know if anyone else has the issue but when i use project management to consolidate a project for handoff to grade etc it always copies over all the proxy media regardless if the master clips are in the selection or not.

This has been happing since the addition of the proxy workflow

Badly needs fixing. Also would be great if it worked in the background. It also stops and won't continue if you have proxies attached that you've deleted at the end of the project. In general it doesn't play well with proxies, trying to archive all of them, not just those attached to a sequence.

Yes, Please! This would make sending projects to out-of-house Color Artists So. Much. Faster. Also, as previously suggested having Project Manager be able to work in the background would be amazing!

If this was possible, this would also solve a huge problem currently, which is that if you have duplicate file names in project (ehem... "Clip0001") when it currently exports, we get Clip0001_001, 002, etc, etc. This makes relinking back to original footage later tedious because Premiere no longer is looking for the correct clip name, it's looking for the _001 version, and you have to manually re-link every clip - sometimes in thousands.

Also fix it! We get about 25% success rate on collect and copy. Most often they just fail. So when they do, it starts over and erases all previously copied content. DONT! Instead just add to what was already moved. Progress bar never really updates either. Clunky.

This! And including trimming without transcoding...

Totally agree, and this feature is totally necessary!

What I currently do is as follows, for whom it might be helpful:

- Export the timeline as an XML.
- Import the XML into the free version of Resolve.
- Use Resolve's media management tool to """COPY & TRIM""".

It seems like a simple tool in other software, I have no idea why Adobe weren't able to fix it. I've been asking for this feature for at least 10 years.

The Project Manager needs a complete overhaul.

The navigation is awful, slow and confusing for large scale projects.

You cannot include nested sequences when selecting one timeline.

You cannot choose to render nested sequences like you can with After Effects.

The ability to render all effects (audio and video) before consolidating.

Hope we can see major improvements in the future.

Project Manager needs a complete overhaul. It has been quite a mess since its inception.

My current workflow actually has me going through the free version of Resolve just to be able to trim and collect the original media without transcoding it.

So is Adobe a congressional body or something why does it take 2 years for something to go through "review." Either make the feature or don't. Man I get tired of this.

The issue is that Premiere Pro doesn't trim the files, right ? So your project end up the same size

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't the 'Include Handles' checkbox the trim option you're looking for? Just check the box and put the frame count to 0. Unless I'm missing something..

Here's a quick way to back-up your media using your bin structure as a folder structure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Emx1D48taPw

Yes, and Premiere needs a simple “rename media file based off clip name” function. If Final Cut Pro 7 had it (and it did, and it was very useful) why on earth does Premiere not have it????

Thank you Igor! Premiere's most ignored feature. In 2020 I renamed it the 'no project management' feature.

I was looking for a better project manager for years...due nothing is changed, i programmed my own extension, Smart Collect. It doesn't transcode but only copy entire clip (i needed a working collect system, so i avoided all things that can cause issues ). It also collect the clip in all nested sequences used in the main sequence you want to collect. Furthermore, it copy the assets in a folder structure that mirror the one you created in Premiere Pro.

You can check it out here https://aescripts.com/smart-collect-for-premiere-pro/

I think is quite difficult to have a time estimation. It depend on the size of single files. For example, 1000 files of 1MB of size are slower to copy than 1 single file of 1000MB. The speed is also influenced by disk speed, ram and CPU usage while copying and other factors.

We have developed an extension for our personal use, then relased on aescript. The extension has a numeric counter instead a moving bar.

If you are interested, you can find the extension here: https://aescripts.com/smart-collect-for-premiere-pro/
