Convert in and out selection to marker with duration

While we are able to option/alt-click a marker and drag to give it a duration, it would be a bit quicker to have a keyboard shortcut that would convert an in and out selection to a marker with that duration. And also, to be able to right click a marker duration and have the option to mark that as an in and out selection.

Here here. This would save a good bit of time in aggregate in all situations, but especially when I'm working on a laptop and the Marker dialogue box will often block the notated duration of my In and Out points.

I use markers in the source panel and timeline a lot and they are indispensable, but I agree this would be extremely helpful. Three other observations on this subject. 1. Could the marker range endpoint snap to the playhead? 2. Would it be possible to have the ability to select multiple ranged markers from within the source monitor and send them to a timeline? 3. Would it be possible for the navigate to next marker keyboard shortcut to recognize a ranged clip's endpoint as a marker? This would make setting in and out points much simpler. Thanks for all your hard work.

I second that. Davinci Resolve has this option and I use it all the time there. Over in Premiere it now feels like an essential feature is missing.

This last part
( to be able to right click a marker duration and have the option to mark that as an in and out selection.)
would be a real timesaver for me, as I have multiple takes each organized in spanning markers. I could have select timeline on source and by clicking on a marker PR would set in and out points ready to be inserted to main timeline.
Adobe please implement this!

Actually, I can't believe this is not already a feature. It seems so obvious. Turn a spanning marker into in/out points and turn in/out points into a spanning marker.

I would like to also add that I would like to be able to take a spanning marker and turn the clips, audio, etc. within it into a nest. That would be AMAZING!!!

I use a little workaround for creating in and out points based on a spanning marker (which certainly still involves too many steps). Once I select the marker the playhead moves to the start of the marker and I can press "i" to mark the in point and then just nudge the end of the spanning marker with a mouse click and press "o" to set the out point. But I agree both options stated above should just be obvious for adobe to implement, so: MAKE IT HAPPEN!

I agree with this.
For example
Right-click on the marker to bring up the menu below.
Reflect the marker on the IN point
Reflect the marker on the OUT point
Reflect the IN / OUT point of the marker on the IN / OUT point of the timeline

Yes, it would be great. In the old days of Final Cut, markers could be used as subclips besides the option to make them in and out too. I was wondering if it has been already implemented, but let's keep praying. 😉

I've fought with Premiere's marker implementation for years. I mark so much footage during first playback. Unlike Final Cut & Avid, the process of getting these selects into a timeline is slow and time-consuming. I really wish they could easily be dropped into a timeline as if they were clip in-out points.

Absolutely agree. I am switching back from FCPx and cannot believe nothing has change in Premiere in the last ten years. I really hope that some day you can easily add range markers to clips like in FCPx that are VISIBLE on the clips itself in the clip browser and aditionalle become subclips that you can immediately add to the timeline.

GUESS WHAT? 🙂 I think this plugin might be what you looking for. It changes in and out points to a marker. Here is the link: https://aescripts.com/markers-pro/ - NO I am not affiliated with them. I just googled to see if this exists and I found your form. If you like this answer mark it correct to help out others. 🙂

Thanks for your help! Sounds great! I will have a look at it and write about it here. 🙂

I hope it doesnt cause trouble. Until now I only installed the sony catalyst plugin and the blackmagic ultrastudio plugin. Both cause issues on my mac and I had to uninstall the sony plugin again..

Peter, let us know. AEScripts provides many useful plugins. Markers Pro is a brand-new release, and I hope it works well. Great options.

The plugin sounds very interesting but I dont think it can speed up my workflow yet. To add colored markers I cannot use the keyboard but have to use mouse buttons plus mouse menus. I hope it will be improved soon because the idea is great.
Adding macros that simulate mouse clicks that dig in the menus can get a little complicated and cause trouble..

"It can add markers to in and out points and not interrupt playback. But Markers Pro doesn't support keyboard shortcuts due to Premiere Pro limitations, and shortcuts only can work when extension panel is highlighted (when window has blue outline). Currently there're are few actions you can perform by pressing keyboard:
1. when adding a marker window activated you can press "return" to add marker or "ctrl/cmd+return" if comment field is active.
2. Press "tab" to switch between fields when adding a marker

In your situation you can create macros that will act as shortcuts and perform what you want. I'd suggest using BetterTouchTool on mac and AutoHotKey on windows. BTT is more user friendly while AHK has more learning curve. There are  AHK alternatives on Windows but I haven't tried them myself.

The macro suppose to perform those actions in your case:
1. Press "add marker" button by simulating a mouse click
2. WIth mouse clicks press dropdown menu and select desired color
3. send "return" input to add a marker

I'll look into creating a shortcuts that change marker color when "add marker" window is active so users can create macros with less steps."

By the way. When I have to work with automation or macros anyway. Wouldnt it be easier to just use automation for all shortcuts necessary in premiere to add range markers? So add shortcuts for "go to in point" "add marker" "go to out point" "extend marker" "Set marker colour". But I dont know if shortcuts for all those commands exist in premiere.

God, I love aescripts + plugins. What a killer site. Great prices. I promise I don't work for them! Just felt liking posting something positive. This plugin looks really helpful.

To be honest I think the best way to implement this would be a hotkey function that converts and in and out point to a ranged marker (and keeps the in out selection intact). As it stands right now, even creating a ranged marker requires users to hunt and alt-click their markers and feels incredibly clumsy. A hotkey that creates an in and outpoint from the nearest ranged marker would also be phenomenal. Been editing weddings since 2017 and this is a feature that would have saved me countless hours, so I would be very eager to see this developed! ❤️

Weirdly Premiere recently added this feature but it only works if the text panel is active. I'm guessing they basically hire coders to make new features and like fire everyone who knows how to mess with the core code. That would explain why the text based editing method lets you highlight text and press m and it makes a spanning marker.  Of course still no progress on getting spanning markers to convert to I/O for adding to timeline 😕

@soaringchickenthanks!! I just tested it out (alt + click and drag marker to expand it) and it works, even without the text panel active or opened at all. Maybe post a bug report?
