LUT Organization

Explorer ,
Jan 24, 2023 Jan 24, 2023
I think it would be awesome to have a better structure for LUTs. I wish it were more organized with the option of having folders. Lightroom has something similar to where you can have folders holding presets, but when I want to use a LUT in Premiere Pro, I have to pick through the long list I have aquired, or go through the browse option and go through those folders one by one. I would like to have that organization that I use in Finder (osx) within Lumetri. I've loved some of the additions to cc2019 and think this could be a nice feature as well.

Add the ability to support the display of folders with the contents of LUTs in them. When adding LUTs to the Premiere product directory, there is no structure in the program itself in the Technical and Creative tabs and the LUTs are scattered in a mix with the standard ones and there is no way to track a specific LUT in an unordered structure.

I have LUTS that I have bought and some that I have made. But I would like a way of organising them either in terms of colour/tone or even in it simplest form Rec709, HDR or Log Grades. So that i don't have 6 versions of a LUT for different cameras. I find resolves folders ace for this and I can scroll through luts to give me a great starting point - but Pr has an unorganised massive list. even if its a folder dropdown within the list that stays open and closes the rest

Baffy's right ... as are you ... the absolute lack of organizational ability in Premiere for LUT  means ...

... an absolute mess, right?

So EVERYONE ... please, upvote this!

The only way to organize currently is to use the naming system. Maybe all log conversions start with L with the second character for the type of log.

And I do know that some people go into the built-in LUT files, and unless they are perhaps going to use something, delete everything. NEVER add to those folders! But by deleting them, the list is a lot shorter, and ONLY includes your LUTs.

Until installing the next version, when you need to delete the built-in LUTs again.

LUT management is very challenging within Premiere. Many users try to simply place the LUTs inside the folder rather than import them via Pr which leads to instability.

Recently I reopened a job (that was finished 2 years ago) in order to create language versions and the LUTs were not in the same order as the new version of Premiere. The wrong LUT was being used in the new Pr version. I believe it is something to do with the numbering order of the LUTs (just a guess).

What we need is a reliable LUT management solution which would be driven via the CC Assets Panel. That way, by having the management handled external to Premiere, we can rely on the file structure over time and new releases of Premiere.

This is easy to solve.

If the LUT doesn't come with PP, always use Browse.

Adding your own LUTs to the Premiere Pro application package is not recommended or supported and is the cause of your current problems. Yes, your assumption is correct, the default LUTs that come installed by default with Premiere Pro are indeed indexed by item number in the folder rather than by name. It's done this way because users are not meant to alter the files in this folder.

If you are using several custom LUTs and want them to show up in the Lumetri dropdown menus we have a solution which is newly available in a recent update (2018 - version 12.1). You can install your LUTs into a specific folder in your OS user library and Lumetri will scan them in.

Here are the instructions to install and use custom LUTs:

LUTs that are stored in these folders will get embedded into the project file when you use them. So you can share the project with a colleague and all the LUTs will be present and be functioning for them even if they don't have the specific LUTs installed. It will not install these LUTs onto the other person's system for them to use on additional clips, however. It is therefore recommended that you send them the LUT with instructions on how to install it onto their system. Hope this helps.

Its funny, because my LUT lay in the Creatice Folder, PP showed them once. There all .cube files and can be used when using "Browse". Browse is an awful exprience when your playing with LUTs. I still wonder why we not can import multiple LUTs at once within "Browse"

Placing new LUTs in the Common folder fixes most of the issue moving forward. However, the list in the Common folder still changes the index number of the Adobe installed LUTs, which will still be an issue when using Adobe installed LUTs. Also older projects migrated from previous versions may have used an indexed LUT which is no longer available in the current Premiere which requires a re-color of those projects – nightmare for the archive.

If the current software is simply changed from an index number for those Adobe installed LUTs to a name it'll solve the issues going backwards and forward.

Please allow for permanently importing LUTs via the user interface. I consider this an essential feature similar to importing other presets.

Why can't changed LUTs behave more like fonts, where you are notified that something is missing and have the option to select the correct one.

Currently the process is mega painful especially when you have many b-roll clips with LUTs applied to the source.

It's compounded by the fact that every time there is a major update LUTs need to be reinstalled and this whole painful process starts over again.

Professional software should not be such a painful time-waster to use.

I agree with this or at the very least, the ability to add keyword tags to custom luts, then offer a way to filter the dropdown menu with that tag.

For example, if I had a few utility luts.. I could select utility and it shows.. or Teal/Orange and show all those luts.

Just some way to organize this. It looks like this hasn't been touched in a while and the last word from Adobe was November 15, 2018...

So how about it?! Can we finally get some traction on this?!?

When I came back to some older projects, I noticed that the LUTs in my adjustment layer were wrong.
It seems that Premiere saves the info of the selected LUT via its position in the drop-down list, rather than the specific LUT itself. But then when you (or the updates) bring more LUTs into the Lumetri 'Creative' list, the previous selection gets pushed out of place and replaced with another. IE; what was 10th down the list could now be 14th, and the new 10th is ugly.

The evidence of this is that when I had *browsed* my folders for a LUT, it is not affected by the described changes to the internal list.

I don't currently share projects with other Premiere users (my subcontractors are all using Final Cut), but if I were to team up with another Premiere user, our projects aren't going to match when we share if we don't have the same LUT list. This is a very unprofessional flaw.

That happens because you are adding LUTs in the Premiere Pro program files ... which users are told not to do ... and yes, this is both expected behavior for LUTs in those folders, and is also covered in their documentation. Not that most users read it, of course.

Look up LUT use in the Premiere Pro help files. There are two locations each on Mac and PCs, for users to park their LUTs such that they are scanned and added to the approrpriate LUT list within the app on launch.

I prefer (PC) the Program Files/Adobe/Common/LUTs location, with subfolders for Technical (Basic tab), Creative (Creative tab) and Input (color management).

There's another location in Users folder setup that you can use. I'd provide their chart, but I'm on my tablet at the moment.

Right, so if I copy my favourites to "Program Files/Adobe/Common/LUTs", will they appear in the drop-down selection?
If so, how do I reset my Creative list to the default first (without reinstalling from scratch)?
I can't remember how I added my LUTs the first time round, I just followed instructions I found online and have a terrible memory.

Within Program files/Adobe/Common/LUTs, make subfolders for Technical, which will be scanned for the Basic tab, and Creative, which will be scanned for the Creative tab.

On launch, Premiere scans those folders as it does for presets and such. LUTs will then appear on the dropdown lists in those Lumetri tabs.

And yes, move the LUTs out of the Premiere folder. It may take a bit to get this straightened out, admittedly. But will be better going forward.

I keep thinking this is the correct folder for user luts. But they both work. I just don't like putting things in 'Program Files', plus my user defined mogrts are stored here and Essential Sounds, media cache, etc...

%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common\LUTs

You can paste that line above into File Explorer.

Kevin documents it here for both:

Thanks, I'll give this a go soon. I've been cooking & eating, then renaming the clips in my current project with their chosen LUT in the clip name for reference in case I lose them in the process.

I recognised a couple of imported LUT folders, moved them to Common/Creative, but now when I hover the mouse over the drop-list and use the wheel to scroll, it opens a browse window instead of scrolling through the colour schemes! That is a massive put-off.

Also, the LUT drop-down is listing the same LUT up to 4 times, when there is only 1 .cube file of that name in the Common folder. I am lost!Premiere-LUTS2.png

Don't use subfolders within the Technical and Creative folders, sadly. We've been asking for some time, but so far, subfolders of LUTs don't work properly.

And there's a limit of a bit over 100 LUTs in a folder that it will recognize.

Plus, it shows them in computer alphanumeric sorting order in the drop-down lists. Andcif you add a number prefix to organize and sort as I do, you have to remember that.

In the default Premiere Pro Luts folder, there are only 3 subfolders and 152 files:
