LUT Organization

Explorer ,
Jan 24, 2023 Jan 24, 2023
I think it would be awesome to have a better structure for LUTs. I wish it were more organized with the option of having folders. Lightroom has something similar to where you can have folders holding presets, but when I want to use a LUT in Premiere Pro, I have to pick through the long list I have aquired, or go through the browse option and go through those folders one by one. I would like to have that organization that I use in Finder (osx) within Lumetri. I've loved some of the additions to cc2019 and think this could be a nice feature as well.

Usually you can figure out by the dates, which have been added, etc... Here's a list...

Zip/CSV of the default Lut files, Open with Excel.

With your file/folder structure; when you hover the mouse over the drop list and roll the scroll wheel, does it change instantly from one LUT to the next, or open a browse window?

On my computers ... both the previous 'main' desktop which is still the backup main, and my current main rig, and my laptop ... when I click either Basic or Creative dropdowns, my LUTs are there sorted in with the program ones. I scroll the same as always.

My LUTs are in the Program Files/Adobe/Common/LUTs folder tree. Note, this is NOT the folder tree for any application, it's a Common folder that Adobe uses for much cross-app stuff. And users are specifically suggested to use this spot as one of two user LUT locations.

The other, which many prefer, is in the Users folder tree. I've tested that, and it works exactly the same. My LUTs appeared in the dropdown list, sorted by name.

As they still haven't given us a subfolder ability to sort out LUTs, I give them a prefix number. That way all mine come first, and they are grouped how I want them to be grouped.

As in: (the names are just popping something cool sounding off the top of my head)

010 Blue Fire

011 Green Fire

020 Red Blaze

110 Shadows Up

111 Shadows Down

120 Mids Up

rinse & repeat

BTW: Here's a really cool program for renaming files. You can put a sequential number in the filename anywhere, (in front, middle, end, etc). Plus for media files it will even use ExifTool and you can rename on meta data. It's good for many bulk renaming, etc...

I've tried copying LUTs into Program Files/Adobe/Common/LUTs/Creative and
C:/Users/Del_7Pro/AppData/Roaming/Common/LUTs/Creative
But with both placements, when I try to scroll through the Lumetri Creative list, passing those LUTs opens up a browser rather than hop to the next in the list.
I give up, just going to settle for doing it 'the wrong way' and label the clips or adjustment layers with the LUT title in the rename.

That's just weird ... sorry, but I can't replicate that on either of my computers.

On my laptop, I just created a couple new LUTs, one put in Technical for Basic tab, the other in Creative, named so they'd be well down each list.

Accessed as per expectation ... they showed in the list, were applied on selecting, and I could drop the list down, pick another either built-in or one of my other LUTs. So I'm wondering what's gone bizarre on your system. I dunno, maybe trying the ol' Trash Preferences, that oft fixes weird stuff in Premiere.

Can we get proper import button for LUTs in lumetri. Its 2025, I should not have to go find an obscure folder directory in order to import my LUTs. Please just implement a button where we can import luts in Premiere simply and quickly.

Is it 2025?

I actually keep an desktop icon link to that handy folder. Not just Luts go there, but also mogrts, and if you want to clear the cache manually, the folders are there also. I keep a .cmd (.bat) file there to quickly delete the cache each time an upgrade is installed, and that includeds the beta software which can be installed more than once a week.

Oh, here's the link for your shortcut in Windows. Just paste this as is into File Explorer or create an icon:

C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common

This is exactly what I mean by its 2025.... Answers like this one. You have accepted a complex work around when there could just be a button! And you're telling others this solution like it fixes everything. I do exactly what you say and I HATE it. I also reformat my working computers twice a year so I have to relink or re-create those folders each time. And It doesnt help that premiere settings cannot sync in the cloud.... Its just so much work - also why cant this stuff be cloud synced? We pay so much and they can provide us with 15mb of space to save our LUTs in the cloud?! I cannot believe you accept this as your solution, its embarrasing to me. Anyone at adobe : Are you embarrased by this?  I have free apps everywhere that save settings in the cloud. I dont accept age old work arounds like this, its 2025 we shouldnt accept a convoluded folder path as a solution and people should not be pawning it as a practical permanant solution, you should still want something better. Are you really happy with having to remember these folder paths as a part of your workflow? How hard is it for them to add a button to import luts? Why are we subjecting ourselves to this archaic standard and telling ourselves its ok? Think about how much money we pay and we cannot get basic QoL features that we see in free apps; is that really ok to you? Lets stop extending out excuses for adobe and demand better solutions

PS and if anyone wants to write - just switch to davinci, thats also not a real solution to the specific problem i'm talking about so GTFO.

this is a fine solution if you only ever use one lut i guess? Sounds horrible to me to have to go find in explorer it every time for hundreds of projects. I import mine into the lut folder manually with that god awful folder path. And i hate it. Just give us a button that lets us import a lut permanantly.... and maybe save it in the cloud so we never have to do it again? Why cant we just get basic things like this. Every single free app has cloud sync settings and how much money do we pay?

Why on earth did you assume either MyerPj or myself thought a desktop shortcut a good "final" solution? I simply don't understand the leap of logic there.

We simply noted a possible workaround for what is totally accepted as a major lack in the program. That is all. As a simple, practical thing to make it less of a pain, while pushing for the new changes.

Personally, as noted, I've been pushing for a completely rebuilt organizational structure for years. And upvoted this abd the several other similar requests over the years.

And with the shortcut you can add as many LUTs as a time as you wish.

Just because never EVER add your LUTs into the folders with Premiere's own LUTs. You mangle the order of everything there.

I want adobe to provide a real solution and I cannot stand when users on this forum always post the old archaic solution as a response to my request. I know the old way of doing it, I want a new way. It feels like such a waste of time to be re-iterated the old way when I'm clearly asking for a new up-to-date solution.

I mention in my original post verbatim : "Its 2025, I should not have to go find an obscure folder directory in order to import my LUTs." and someone will respond by telling me the folder path..... gauranteed. Its downright dismissive - as if the conversation should end there. What is going on here? Do we feel like we have to make excuses for adobe? We pay a lot of money we should be able to demand something new - which is what I'm demanding.

Everytime I post in these forums its like this. I say "hey we should have this new thing and it would make this a lot easier" and people will say garunteed "you gotta do it this old school way" - explaining the exact process I'm trying to remove. Why does posting a new idea in the "ideas" forum get so dismissed? I know the old way, you dont have to explain it to me, I'm literally complaining about it - get on board and complain with me maybe some changes will happen. That is why i'm frustrated. This is supposed to be where we bring new ideas and talk about the NEW ideas, not re-iterate the old methods.

No one is saying the old way is good. Period.

We agree with wanting the change. Period.
