[Now released] Restore MKV Format Support

LEGEND ,
Jan 24, 2023 Jan 24, 2023

Removing MKV Format support has a negative impact on the workflow of people that work with broadcasting software like OBS. Restore MKV support. Having native support for MKVs, even if they don't edit well without generating proxies, saves me a ton of time that I'd otherwise have to spend remuxing/transcoding files.

Hi all,

MKV support was released in v25.2 of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audition.

If you have any questions or comments about the feature, please let us know!

Regards,

Fergus

Am doing a massive found footage project, with 800 feature films in MKV. Working on the older version and then switching to Resolve permanently, removing features is a complete joke Adobe.

Just spent the last few hours+ trying to understand why I couldn't create proxies with 4k 60fps footage from my phone.
Reason the phone changes the format when using Hi-res Audio to MKV! When using 3D-audio the format is mp4.

Come on Abode, can't you see your loosing out, by not supporting a format used by millions devices!

I don't want to spend the time re-encoding and I'm not sure exactly how that would affect the Audio.

Nice one Eric, I'll give that a go.

Antoine, i've made a quick 7 second clip from my phone. its about 50MB. Hi-res Audio, 4k, 60fps, MKV. How do upload the clip? I can't attach it.

I've done a bit of study. Most containers cant handle the various audio technologies, apart from MKV and encoding to other formats seems to cause audio issues. Which ill try myself.

After analyzing my clip, I'm interested in your opinion Antoine.

Eric, i've tried what you suggested. No Joy. Playback always worked. But proxies and exporting in MKV seems impossible.

Angelo, couldn't connect on the dropbox because of 2 Factor Authentification. However you can just "share a link" with dropbox and anyone with the link will be able to download it !
Thanks

I'm just gonna give up with using MKV. Playback does work, No Audio. I have an old version of Premiere Pro.

I'll try other software, for the best encoding i can find. Magix Vegas Pro, does have a "MKV Experimental" Tick box option. i might start with that.

On the Plus side. I've learnt lots of new things dealing with instance.

The audio present in my MKV clips is Flac 98000kbps, 16-bit, stereo.

Handbrake is the only way to deal with MKV. Re-encoding is the best I've seen so far.
Being able to select different devices to help with encoding is very cool and helps speed things up.

Why was this removed. I now need to convert 2TB of mkv and also all my projects files that were in limbo as I some how had a 2019 version of premier supporting mkv.

Hey! Can you guys bring back support to MKV files? I use OBS to record videos and they only come out MKV. You guys are great, but this would make the product even better.

you should at least give a heads up before doing somethings like this , we have existing projects using mkv file format .Regardless if its low or high format its up-to us , a good editing software should be user friendly removing some of the features is not totally acceptable Instead of upgrading your features dont downgrade and make us disappointed. we were so happy about the features that you are introducing on each update but this is an total disappointment. we have a corporate deal and this is going to effect us big time. kindly look into this matter, or else we would have to consider looking for other alternatives. cause we will never know what will be you next move. which things you will remove. Thanks

Cannot believe you broke every project I have worked on for the last 6 months. Inexcusable. Every camera clip I have is in MKV, every project is now unusable until I fiddle around with a bunch of manual steps that may or may not get the project back to exactly as it was.

This decision really hurt our company and caused a lot of our editors to switch to Resolve or Avid Workflows. This was a bad move, regardless of how much you saved on licensing. Other comments echo my struggles with broken project files, lost man hours, increased storage costs (from having to remux years of MKVs into MP4s while preserving the originals). You really betrayed us, Adobe. And your biggest threat right now is free. $600 a year is starting to feel like the tip of the iceberg when you break our workflows like this.

You could stay with the old version supporting MKV and downgrade your project manually https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJO4PlHASIs

I was using OBS to record, and chose MKV because it doesn't require finalization of the file after recording. Why would you REMOVE support for something like this in professional software?

MKV may not be a wildly popular format, but it makes Media Encoder unable to do it's job if MKV is not supported. I am look to transcode this format and I am unable to do this with this software.

Please consider making Media Encoder more useful by supporting more formats like MKV.
