Dear Adobe Team,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take the opportunity to share some feedback on my experience using the Canon EOS R5C with Premiere Pro. While I have been utilizing raw files more frequently, I have noticed that the software is struggling with processing these files during playback. Even without any effects or color adjustments applied, Premiere Pro seems to lag significantly, but particularly with small effects like lumetry color.

Upon playback, my CPU usage spikes to 100% on all cores, while the GPU remains relatively calm at around 50%. This makes it nearly impossible to smoothly playback footage at full resolution. When I reduce the playback resolution to 1/16, it does play through, but this compromises the quality and is not an ideal workflow.

Using proxy files is an option, but it becomes limiting when I need to make more intricate adjustments such as color grading or noise reduction.

With these concerns in mind, I would like to inquire if it is possible for Adobe to improve the processing of Canon RAW Light files in Premiere Pro, so as to alleviate the heavy strain on system resources.

To provide some context, I am working on a powerful M1 Max 64GB machine which handles 4k HEVC flawlessly. However, the Canon RAW files seem to overwhelm the system.

I genuinely appreciate any insights or guidance that you could offer on this matter. It is my hope that Adobe can continue to enhance the render engine to address these challenges.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

Chris

Hi all,

Hardware acceleration for Canon Cinema RAW Light is now in beta. More info is available here:

With support now in beta, I'm going to lock this thread. We'd love your feedback on Cinema RAW Light support; please add your comments to the thread above.

Regards,

Fergus

I'm in the same boat with my Canon R3 6k raw files, completely useless. How is it possible that Adobe lets this go on and Canon doesn't get into Adobe over it.

Just got the new Canon c400 and after our first test shoot my editor opened the files in FCP did a quick edit all was good. When I got to my office with the files I opened Premire (which I have been using since 1999 BTW) and I couldn't figure out what was happening. The clips would freeze for as much as 2 seconds. So FCP and Resolve can play back Canon Raw Lite clips with no issues but Premire can't? I'd also like to point our my machine is more powerful with more RAM than my editors. This is bad news for Adobe.

Hi @Fergus H ! Thank you for this valuable response, we are looking forward! To clarify the subject a little more, I am able to playback very smoothly the 8k raw files that come out of my Canon R5C, but impossible to playback the 5.6k raw files (crop sensor) from the same camera => too choppy! The 2 files are Canon Raw Light CRM, only the resolution changes.
Another thing, have you thought about improving the source settings of Canon Raw Light CRM files in Premiere Pro? In Davinci Resolve there are many more options, including the possibility of changing the ISO.
It would be wonderful to add the ISO setting on Premiere Pro...!
Thanks in advance! Kind regards!

@Chris Spiegl At this point, our plan is to provide acceleration to:

  • macOS on Apple silicon
  • Windows on Intel computers

Fergus

Thank you, @Fergus H for this update. That is huge news! Is this GPU acceleration on all systems or a specific system?
I am on M1 Max MacBook Pro (so Apple Silicone) and wonder if this will apply?

Hi all,

I want to let you all know that we have Canon RAW Light performance vastly improved in an internal beta of Premiere Pro. In this beta, we are now using GPU to accelerate playback of the raw files.

I don't yet have a date for when this public beta will be available but I will update this post when we are ready to share more information.

Regards,

Fergus

I had the c400 for a week to test it. But editing the CRM Raw Files in Premiere with this bad performance stops me from buying the cam. I also got a M1Max Macbook and the files are super fine if you use Davinci. Hope this changes in the near future

Anyone get a solution to this? I'm having the same issue with C70 CRM footage. Why can I edit 8K RED footage no problem but 4K at 1/8 resolution is choppy as all get out.

Yep, you read that right. If you just bought the Canon C80, you're out of luck editing the Raw CRM files, as you can't play back at any resolution without dropping frames. Filing a report with Adobe.
