Question

File bin not updating to show changes made on HDD

I've searched for a solution to this to no avail. Sorry if the answer is already out there.

I'm picking up a project that someone else started. All the footage on the drive was totally unorganised (just "Card one", "Card two" etc.). This is what was imported into the project when it was originally started.

I've organised all footage into more meaningful folders on the HDD. I opened Premiere and, as expected, it couldn't find the files anymore and asked me to re-link. I did that and all is good on the timeline.

My problem is the footage Bin is still showing the OLD system. Just a list of Card 1, Card 2 etc. folders with all the files files linking back to their new locations. Is there a way I can update the Project Bin so it shows the files how they are organised on the hard drive NOW, rather than how they were when they were originally imported?

Many thanks.

I have found a work around.

Go to Preferences > Media

Tick 'Allow duplicate media during project import'

Import folder or reorganised files.

The old folder has to remain there for existing sequences but I can now build new sequences using my organised folder structure instead.

There is no easy way to do this with existing assets in Premiere, you'll have to manually re-organize. Premiere will re-create your folder structure when you import a folder, but other than that, Premiere bins and system folders have no connection.

Well that is very very frustrating. There are hundreds of files organised in to dozens of folders.

I've tried re-importing the main (now re-organised) folder but Premiere just recognises that the files are already there and doesn't overwrite / update the existing bin.

Hey, understood.

Premiere's "bin" structure isn't designed to mimic necessarily that of folders on-disc, as it is designed as an internal organization tool. Note, when you group things in bins, Pr doesn't ask about disc structure or anything.

It means that for certain work, it is a totally open tool for making the organization structure that works for your project without needing to move things on drives. Often, well ... in a network situation, collaborative working, you start moving things from folder to folder on the drive and you're gonna get yelled at by all the other folks who's projects you've just mangle.

But it also means that if you go about reorganizing drives for more sense on-disc, it doesn't change the internal bin structure.

And ... your media is in limbo-land within Pr.

There is one way that might cut down some work.

If all your media is in a folder-tree structure under a common parent folder, try creating a new project, then in the Project panel, right-click/Import selecting the top parent folder. That will then add all the sub-folders as bins.

Then with both the old project and new one open, work at moving sequences to the new project, relinking the media as you go.

Kevin-Monahan frequently has the best comments for re-structuring projects though ... so let's see if he'll pop in.
