High CPU Usage & Lag

Dear forum,

I've been trying to sort this problem out all evening but i'm sitting here scratching my head, hopefully someone can help. I'm trying to edit some 4K drone footage in PP but I'm experiencing lag that is making it almost impossible. Laptop specs are Core i7-6820HK running at 2.7ghz, 32GB RAM, GTX 980. I've closed down all other programs but my CPU usage is going up to as high as 96%, is that normal?

I would have thought that the core i7 and GTX 980 would be able to cope with this? I've been reading that older versions of PP don't have any problems with 4K so i've gone back to CC 2015.3 but it's exactly the same for me. If anyone can help out it would be greatly appreciated.

    I am also having this issue on a i7 8700 3.4ghz, 32gb ram, ssd

    Rendering on videos spikes the CPU to 100% after adding some simple effects and overlays to a video.

    If you're dealing with H.264, the general recommendation for building a performance rig is 8-10 cores at 3.8Ghz or better, with as close to 10 GB of RAM per core as you can get.

    Not your machine?

    Not mine either. So I use Cineform proxies and/or lower res on the Program monitor during playback.

    OS and apps on a newer SSD, an m.2 and other SSDs for projects, media, and cache.

    I recommend using Proxies for all H.264 media.  (YouTube has tutorials.)  Use only the included Cineform presets.

    Thanks so much for replying. I have tried 1/4 & 1/8 but it still really struggles & if I put a transition in between clips it goes into meltdown! Is it normal for premier pro to have the processor running between 90-100% ? Sorry to ask but I'm new to PP and this is a brand new laptop too.

    I'm going to try changing the codec

    just to add, i have 2 x 256 SSD, PP is installed on that drive too along with everything else program related

    Hi Luff,

    to avoid trouble with drone-footage (in my case DJI files), I always change codec for editing.

    Try DNX or Cineform, both should work fine.

    Another way: use proxy files in a lower resolution.
