Issue with PP 14 CC2020 UI Size - Too Big to Work on W10 Pro

Nouveau ici ,
Feb 03, 2020 Feb 03, 2020

Hi - Can anyone help - I am about to give up on CC2020 after 2 weeks of pain

Running W10 64 Bit Pro - the UI is just way too big to work with for timelines - both on laptop and a 40 inch UHD screen - have tried everything i can find - changed Windows Scaling to 100% - fiddled with High DPI settings - forced App to use Nvidia GPU but really the UI is shocking to work with - it just doesnt want to scale like all the other apps I use on Windows!

Any more suggestions??

In 2 weeks, I have had to disable my intel GPU, do multiple manual uninstall/reinstalls of CC2020, change windows scaling just to run PP and AE - and then find it just crashes randomly or stops working mid task!! How does anyone use PP??

Thanks

Not a performance issue by the way I run Resolve with no such issues

"the UI is just way too big to work with for timelines"

I've no clue what you're talking about. So adding a screen-grab could be very useful. Use the picture icon at the top of the reply box to upload the image directly into your reply please. And I'm quite serious ... I have no clue what you mean.

The Premiere UI is so malleable ... you can resize any panel, create panel groups, move panels from one panel group to another, eliminate or add panels, even "float" panels. It is SO much more flexible than Resolve. Which I also use.

If you don't like part of a Premiere workspace, resize it, move it, or just delete it. Then save your changes as a new workspace so you can quickly get to the worskpace layout you want for specific tasks.

Resolve allows for a small amount of resizing of certain areas. But you can't eliminate areas (panels in Premiere) nor change the layout in any significant way.

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to reply. All points noted. I totally agree that PP is way more flexible in terms of moving panels around and customization but the issue I have seems to be the way it scales in Windows 10. I have created the most minimal workspaces feasible in order to allow maximise fast cut and editing but its still a very poor experience so far. That's without the lags and crashes added in. I am using proxies.Panel too big at 150%Panel too big at 150%Clips dont auto scale to fit height of Video trackClips dont auto scale to fit height of Video track

If I have 150% Windows Scaling on - recommended on 1920 x 1080 - the UI Panels dont scale to fit the screen so menu options are missing - cant hit the okay button etc - timelines seem way too big to work with.

See Screenshot

This is the same on on a 40 inch screen

Reducing windows scaling to 125% helps but again it just feels like most of the UI is too big for the screen estate

The next issue is that when you lay down a sequence - the clips again dont auto scale - and I am constantly fiddling with the size buttons to adjust the video track height on the right hand side of the sequence (this may be my lack of knowledge here). Having set them up they dont stay locked so its a constant reset and a lot of wasted time

Compare this to resolve where it just fits and auto scales perfectly on any sized screen without having to adjust windows scaling and so doing a cut/edit is way quicker and easier. I dont have to play with W10 to get a great display. And of course theres the cut panel as well.

I am about to see if I can cut in Resolve and export the project to PP do later effects in PP. I really did want to use PP for all the other tools it offers as I am not an expert here. PP has way more versatility for the non pro.

So putting my frustrated original rant to one side - if you have any tips on how to configure W10 and PP2020 for optimal cutting and editing I am all ears.

And if you know how to export a project started in Resolve > PP I would be extremely grateful!

Thanks again

What is the real screen resolution of the laptop and 40 inch tv.

Clips dont auto scale to fit height of Video track

No they dont you set that yourself.

I've never had an issue with dialog boxes not showing fully on-screen. I've got three monitors on my desktop, and of course also my laptop that I'm sitting at right now. All screens are at or above 1080 vertically in 'native' pixel dimensions, so all dialogs show easily. And that includes my UHD screen which is set to 150%.

Track height is something you set manually in Premiere ... and of course, you can create track presets also, which would probably be very helpful for you. Set it as you wish, then click the wrench menu icon in the Track Header area of the timeline, and ... Save Preset.

I've not noted my track heights changing size ... if I've got them set to one height, they stay there in that workspace. So ... not sure how to respond to some of your post. Now ... Premiere will 'remember' how things were in a Worskpace the last time it was there ... so if you're changing workspaces, they would change.

Like so many others, your monitor is too small for the pixel size. IE: It has too high a resolution. This causes the physical pixels to be to small, so you need to resort to scaling.

Scale at 100%, that's only real way to use an LCD/LED screen. If 150% is really 'recommended' then that is Microsoft doing the math for you - and determining your monitor is too small for the resolution and you're going to need scaling to see Windows reasonably.

"Reducing windows scaling to 125% helps but again it just feels like most of the UI is too big for the screen [real] estate"

Again, scale at 100% and leave it there. Then you will complain about everything being too small. But you'll get back the screen real estate you purchased. Otherwise as you scale, you essentially create a smaller resolution monitor.

I can run at 200% on my UHD screen, and the dialogs and everything "stay" on screen without troubles. So it puzzles me they run off the screen on yours.

For now it is still guessing as we dont know the resolution. But assuming it does not comply with the min. display requirements.
