Premiere 14 - Does not support h264

We updated one of our work iMac's to Premiere Pro 14. It will no longer support h264 .mov file. It says it is not supported. Won't let us import any footage and the clips that were already there before the update in the project won't read.

first thing to try is to simply change the extension from the file from .mov to .mp4.  (probably a good idea to duplicate the file first).  If that doesn't work, bring your .mov into mpegstreamclip and do a save as to .mp4.  Should be a very fast operation.

mp4 files are definitely still supported in premiere...

Here's a link to mpegstreamclip if you don't have it already

Does the file have a captions track? You can check with MediaInfo

Is this on an iMac Pro? Would love to know if you fix this problem!

We solved the mystery... mostly.

The footage was originally Canon C100 MTS footage that was rewrapped to h264 mov's. Other h264 footage from GH5 cameras were totally fine, as well as C300, RED, etc. So it was definitely only this type of footage. But after talking with our data manager, she told me that the footage was rewrapped using ClipWrap, and all other footage we've tried using the same process has the same issues. So we found the culprit.

We have been using MPEG Streamclip to transcode to ProRes files in the middle of this issue, but are going to redownload Media Encoder 2019 to do that now. Not sure totally why 2020 won't recognize these rewrapped clips like 2019 used to, but at least it's a step forward.

JB,

How frustrating! Defintiely try deleting media cache. If that doesn't work, would you mind trying to move the media files to a different folder, then reimport? That can work.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi, I am experiencing the same issue debated here, failing to import a .mov file with a H264 compression. What I am not clear by reading different threads, is whether this compression is accepted or not by Premier

I have read this on another post:

" The other problem is that Apple stopped supporting H.264 encoding with QuickTime so that option is gone forever. There is nothing that Adobe can do about it. " from a thread called: "H264 I miss it"

SO I am trying to understand whether I need to work on my computer by re-installing, deleting cache and whatever else..

or is this all a waste of time because Premier doesnt support that compression?

THANKS

Best Lisa

if you've done what Ann suggests, this could be caused by other applications that are installed on the system.  First and easiest thing to do is as I suggested, create a new user.  If that doesn't work, you might need to do a clean install of the OS and then install CC2020 and then be very careful before you install anything else...

Another machine has 2020 and the footage worked fine, so we are going to reinstall 2020 on the non-working machine in case there was an issue with the upgrade.

Already trashed preferences.

any reason why you can't keep working in CC2019?   You might need to do a clean install of the OS and Creative Cloud.  May be some sort of conflict with another application.  You might try and create a new user in your mac system preferences:  users and accounts.    what MacOS are you on?  I just loaded an h264 .mov into Premiere 14.00 working in High Sierra without any issues.  If you open the file in quicktime player and hit command-i, what are the specs for the file?

Are all the .h264 .mov's from the same source?

Mojave 10.14.6

The files all work on another machine running Premiere 13.1.4
