Premiere Optical Flow stutters in timeline, but works in exports

Hello!

I'm currently running Adobe Premiere 2020 (problem also exists in 2019) on a 2013 Mac Pro with Mojave. This problem persists consistently with either OpenCL or Metal enabled.

Whenver I apply optical flow to a clip in my timeline, the clip only appears to playback correctly if there is nothing in a video track above or below it, or if there are no effects, fades, etc... applied to it. The moment I add anything like that, the clip suddenly plays back stuttering (similar to what Frame Sampling looks like). I don't believe it's stuttering b/c my computer is having a hard time playing it back, b/c when I go frame by frame it still looks choppy.

In addition, when I add any of these effects, the option to render the clip (little red bar showing up above the clip) goes away.

What's weird though, is when I export my timeline (and make sure to change my Time Interpolation to Optical Flow), everything exports correctly. This works, but sort of feels like I'm running blind until I can export what I'm working on.

I wanted to see if there was a way I could view my results in my timeline instead of having to export it in order to see what it's all going to look like.

Appreciate any help on this matter. Thank you!

I seem to be consistently able to "Render Selection" with multiple clips and optical flow. Only when I have a green bar am I not able to. I think I'm using the defalt keystrokes but not certain. It's Render In to Out on my shortcut. Set In/Out points and use ctrl-enter (numpad). Certainly if you select SEQUENCE\Render In to Out it works for me.

A possible workaround:

Try nesting your optically flowed clip and then adding additional effects, layers or transitions in your main sequence? Curious to know if this works.

Great idea! Nesting the clip still let's me render the clip. But unfortantly once I add any effects, layers, or transitions the issue comes back and I'm unable to render the clip. I even tried nesting it again after the effects were applied, but again no fix.

Have you tried rendering the effect in the timeline?

I'm only able to render the effect in the timeline if there are no clips above or below my Optical Flow'd clip, or if there are no fades or effects on it.

If I add any effects onto it, or place any clips above or below it, the ability to render in my timeline goes away. The red line above it turns orange. When I go to Sequence > Render Effects In and Out, nothing happens. When I playback, it stutters.
