Premiere Pro CS4 is now not stable in Windows 10 Pro, but was and worked great before

Yesterday, I think morning, awoke to find my PC had rebooted, and I've told Windows not to update, but it did anyway, or I think it did. Anyway, no restore point was created so could not go back to the previous update as I suspect it would have fixed the issue. BTW, I have run compatibility and it's set to Win 7.

I can get it to work after a fashion, but it will lock up and not respond, at times will become responsive, but lock up again and a few minutes ago, it locked up and so far, has not released so will have to get Task Manager to force it to shut down, and yes, I have admin rites under Windows 10.

Before the update, it ran great, but was trying to set up Proxy files to help it work better as my PC is an older Dell Optiplex 9020 with a 4570 Core i5 processor with 16G of ram and it has run fine with a PNY Invidia GeForce 610 GT card with 1G of RAM onboard, and many effects needed rendering, including the older legacy titler in order to scrub smoothly, so used HB (Handbrake) to do this as I had been having issues with ME and generating proxy files and all I got was a couple of frames or so and that's it. I had suspected part of the issue was GoPro can't be accepted by this older version of PP as it predates HEVC/H.265 format, but can handle H.264/AVCHD files no problem natively and you must go directly from the oriignal files off the camera to do the transcodes, not transcode, then transcode again from the already transcoded files.

Anyway, I did two transcodes, one for H.264/1080P, and one for Proxy 1080, both done in HB, both from the raw files as pulled from the micro SD card from the GoPro (both it and the Canon Vixia are shooting in 1080P right now). The GoPro is the Hero 9. The Canon just needed to be converted to proxy 1080.

I found a post about cleaning out both the Appdata and Document folders within the User folder, and the Appdata was all cleared out, but the Documents\PP has several folders in it, and all had stuff in them, do I need to clean them all out, or just one as the post didn't say which folder or all of them to empty, just to empty and it would fix the problem.

I'm fresh out of ideas, any suggestions? Outside of blowing out Windows 10 and reinstalling, I  have an image I can use if need be and is the original image that the PC came with, but I upgraded the SSD from a 120GB to a 500GB SSD drive and just used Macrium Reflect to image the new drive.

Otherwise, I may have to kick in and buy my own clean copy of 10 Pro and start it all over again and as you probably know, it's a pain to do. Done it multiple times before with the install discs of Vista and XP in the past.

Thanks.

you can check the security updates in control panel and see if anything was installed.
(disclaimer, at own risk)

you can also run gpusniffer and add it to the txt file. instructions at theinvisibleblog

to add gpu support again (maybe it got disabled with a driver update.)

also, rename the preference folder so it has to rebuild that.

I would reinstall adobe before I reinstalled windows anyways. there's an adobe cleaner tool to cleanup

for a fresh install too.

CS4 probably doesn't like h.264 at all, so I'd transcode to something else before even ingesting. even if it appears to work, it may have memory leaks.

It's a little unclear if your trying variable framerate formats is a causation or correlation. I would try stuff you know was working about a week prior so you're comparing apples to apples.

Before, I was using H.264 1080p straight across once transcoded from H.265 and it worked fine, however, being super compressed, if I do anything that is an effect or color grading or even a titler, the timeline turns red in those areas and can't scrub smoothly at all. With proxy 1080  in Handbrake, I can at least have titles overlay and it'll scrub cleanly in yellow, but all the other issues come up. At this point, was trying to make proxies to help with the editing flow. I understand CS4 can do proxies, but it's clunky and CS5 on can do it easier.

The bigger issue is newer CC versions require a 6th or 8th gen or newe intel or Mac PC, and mine is a 4th gen Core i5 based Optiplex and the graphics card is about the same, well, 2015, but does use an SSD drive for the OS/software.

I plan on updating this PC,but with the pandemic appearing to end and a job is to be found, ASAP for now, that'll have to wait, plus graphics cards are still expensive at the moment, but not as bad as it has been.

The current PC was meant to be a stop gap as my old Dell, a first gen Core i7 based desktop was dying, still ran Vista, had several components replaced, including the motherboard and the final straw was the original mechanical hard drive was failing as it had developed multiple bad sectors and the OS, both Vista and Win 7 were getting corrupted due to the bad drive. So this was purchased refurbed to get me by until I could build a new PC.

Thank you. I do have a copy of CS4, with a liscence that is registered back in 2009 as I bought a copy of a business version of the master suite then from a gent that had purchased it with multiple liscenses, and was going to sell his CS3 copy to me, however, I had at that time just bought the first gen Core i7 tower desktop from Dell (the Studio XPS 456T based PC, which is 64 bit and he said that CS3 was not friendly to 64 bit machines so sold me a copy, legally of course, and even checked with you all and it's been fine ever since. So can I just upgrade to either CS5 or 6? Otherwise, I have the DVD and can reinstall no problem for now.

That seems like you may have purchased a volume license which is not allowed to be resold.

In any case, as Ann Bens said, you won't be able to activate it after you reinstall it if you uninstall it.  It will only work during the trial period.

No, I can reinstall the entire suite, and have the correct DLL.lib key to make it work and has

worked just fine through several reinstalls, including to the current PC.

The thing I have to do is remove the old DLL.lib key and replace it with the correct one and it's fine.

Support ends here: cracked software is a big no no on these forums.

BTW, the CPU usage under H.264 was quite bad, now, it's better, but memory usage is bad and power usage is quite bad under Premiere. Add to that, my task manager now when not full screen only shows the top bar and was not an issue before the "update". I will check and see if anything was updated in the security and the other things you suggest, and may end up reinstalling PP., of which I had thought of either trying to fix, or reisntall anyway. I have not tried other major software of the creative suite so don't know if they were affected or not.
