Question

Premiere pro freezing on import mts files

So I am having a big problem. How big? I am going to France within two hours to make clips and Premiere Pro is letting me down.

When trying to import MTS files Premiere Pro freezes.... Here is what I tried so far:

-Fresh installing Windows

-Updating all my drivers, windows and Premiere pro

-Importing MTS files from their original file structure

MP4 files for instance work fine. Within the first minute of launching Premiere Pro, I am able to import maby two MTS video clips. Then when trying to import more clips, it freezes again.

I tried contacting Adobe help centre and helped me out really nice. At first, the problem was solved (seemed like a problem due to not using the original file structure). However, after two hours the problem was back without having made any changes.

I really hope that somebody can help me out or suggest what to do.

Adobe Premiere 2018 supports .MTS files.

To avoid problems with the RAM you have to remove the files you want to put on premier from sub-sub-sub-folders, example:

    YES: Movie.mts ----> move ------> to D: \ Movie \

    NO: Movie.mts ----> move ------> to D: \ Movie \ SD \ File \ local \ Movie file \ HD \ because all these folders \

Okay so time for a new update:

Today I called the helpdesk from Adobe again. The problem is with the GPU as they say. It seemes that Geforce cards are designed for gaming and are not recommended for premiere pro Adobe Premiere Pro CC System Requirements . I had noticed this before, but I thought that it would maby be a bit slower, not that it would have such a big impact on just a freaking .mts file.

Not being sure about their awnser to my problem I contacted Nvidia wich (sadly) said the same thing:

Younus: Yes, Geforce cards are designed for gaming.
Younus: You have to go with Quadro cards, these are specially designed to run professional applications.
Younus: The GeForce & Quadro cards are manufactured on different API platforms to support different features of games or applications like DirectX, OpenGL, Shader model, CUDA etc.

Marco Scholte: My grahpic cards actually works fine, I only have difficulties when working with .MTS files. MP4 files for instance work fine for me. Can this really be related with not having the correct graphic card?
Younus: Yes, this seems to be related to not having correct GPU.

So (unless somebody else says something else) I am screwed and have to buy a new laptop after just 5 months.

I've got to call BS on that one.  I think nVidia GeForce cards are the best option for Premiere Pro.  CUDA is more mature than OpenCL or Metal, and consistently offers better performance.  And the GeForce line specifically offers more bang for the buck over the Quadro line.  In other words, you'll get more performance for the same money with GeForce than with Quadro.

    Hi Jim,

What do you mean by calling 'BS'?

I have no clue about Cuda or OpenCL or things like that, I honestly don't even know what that means. By looking more into it I found this page on the Nvidia site: Adobe Premiere Pro CC - Faster Video Editing | NVIDIA . And they actually only recommend (unpayable) Quadro GPU's. But that kind of makes sense with the other two answers.

So maby you can ask your BS(?) ?

I'm still having trouble when importing MTS files, I wait my memory in task manager  to go to 94% than I close premiere so it can empty RAM memory and after that open the project again to continue reading the MTS files. I repeat this process till it cashe all the files. We make more than 150 weddings per year and this is very very bad for me because it is taking  my time to sit and open close premiere.

So I wasn't able to respond until now.

Thank you for your respond Jim Simon. I tried your suggestion and here is what happend.

Actually, when using the original folder structure and opening all of the clips in one go through the media browser (suggestion 2c), I was able to edit. Until after about two hours working on a video and suddenly premiere pro started freezing again and the playback monitor stopt working, it became unworkable. I tried to rename the folder (2i) but that dit not work. I was forced to convert all my clips to mp4 and relink them. The rest of the week I had to shoot in MP4, which is a shame when using a Sony Alpha A7S.

What I also noticed is that when working on a project, after some time of work the frames drop dramatically (51frames, while shooting 50 frames video). This also happens when using mp4 clips. Setting the videoplayback resolution to 1/4 does not work.

This all is very annoying, I do want to use Premiere pro professionaly one day but this is a very bad start.

I will try your solution tomorrow Kevin-Monahan. Thank you for the suggestion.

For your media, I also recommend using Cineform proxies.  You'll find a marked improvement in performance, especially once effects come into play.

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for the suggestion. Although it did not work for me (still freezus on import) I am happy to know about this very usefull function of Premiere Pro!

    Hi marcos,

Sorry for this issue. This might be a bug with the current version. Try importing the files one at a time instead of in a batch. If that works, then you are hitting this issue. If this is indeed the case, please add your comment and upvote to this bug: BUG: .MTS file import much slower than in earlier versions – Adobe video & audio apps

Let us know if you have it working with the workaround to import one file at a time. Sorry for the issue, we are working on a fix right now.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin-Monahan,

I tried your suggestion but it did not work. Still freezes on import. What to do? I am going to call the support helpdesk tomorrow again. I really hope you have some other suggestions.

    Kind regards,

    Marco
