Premiere Pro works fine until I import one more video then it freezes...

Hi. I've been editing a project and it's been fine, with multiple video and audio files and tracks. Now, though, when I import any video clip Premiere (fully updated) slows right down and I literally can't do anything on the timeline, until I delete the imported video, in which case it works fine again. Everything freezes except the media browser window. The clips are a mix of 1080p MOV files and 1080p MP4. I've cleaned the entire cache, I've selected CUDA on the playback engine, I've never had this problem before. Has anyone else encountered this and can you give me any tips? TIA

OK.  The only thing that comes to mind is that your system can't handle the footage very well.  Have you tried the Proxy workflow?
