hi dave and everyone what is this for?
Hi
A physical size can be assigned to your material so that when it is used in another app on a model it can be applied at the right scale.
For example you might have made a paving material that measures 2 metres x 2 metres x 10cm high. Adding that size helps ensure it can be applied to a model at the same scale.

You're right it is optional - but useful as that way it can be used at its designed size (or of course scaled to any other size if the user prefers)
