Generator saying empty

New Here ,

Hey, I'm fairly new to substance painter and am struggling to figure out how to use generators. We went over them a while ago in lesson, and I need to create a textured model by thursday, I've roughly unwrapped my sawblade and am struggling to add and use generators as everytime I do, it says under the mask Generator (empty) I don't understand what I have done or why it is saying this. Everytime I click the generator it won't do anything at all.

Hi @Euan35725270x00m,

Thanks for the question.

Adding a Generator is like adding a Filter. It is not an effect as properly said, but a category of effects. If you simply RMB > add a generator to a Layer, it will be empty until you define the effect that the generator will use (Properties panel).

A more intuitive way of using Filters/SmartMat/etc. is to check directly in the library for what you're looking for, and drag & drop the desired resource in the Layer stack.

Regards,

Hi I have a question relating to this,

When I click on the effect I want as generator nothing happens, I've tried it with multiple effects and the ''choose generator'' tab will close but no generator shows up and it keeps saying ''no generator selected''
