DECAL IN STAGER, TERRIBLE!

Goodmorning everyone!
If it can be useful, I confirm that the stager render, with the imported textures applied, is useless! I enclose example, same texture used in size and stager with the same model, first imported in ai format then in jpg format. In the screens you also see the render settings. Remembering that it is ridiculous that those who invest in an M1 MAX with 64gb do not have the possibility to use GPUs. I'll switch to blender!

So it has been an entire YEAR and there has still been no solution to this problem, obviously. simulating a printed acrylic sign is beyond the capacity of the software. I feel really stupid for paying 1000€ for this green  banana software. there is a bunch of stuff that might be great that i don't have any use for, all i need is a more potent DN. expensive fail. must cancel subscribtion before i forget.

What interests me - is that NO Adobe employee has responded here. That's NOT a good sign. This simply means there is no solution and are prob not looking for a solution in the near future. What the original poster here has posted is the same problem posted on so many other animation forums, website forums, Reddit, and Facebook.

Is there any news about fixing this bug? I would really like to keep using Stager as it does what I need very well. But if there isn't any time frame for a solution to this problem I will have to look elsewhere.

It's ridiculous that this thing still not fixed. So we can not add stickers to our objects on the NEW Adobe software, something that Dimensons did perfectly. What's the point of this software then? Make nice and flat circles and triangules with flat colors?

totaly agree. Most of other 3D software manage it very well and with more setting like adding normal to the sticker. Keyshot for instance should be a source of inspiration for the developer on that point.

try svg format...

I just tried this and had a better result in the preview and render.

@DavidLloydImageworks you are correct regarding the correlation between image size and ppi. Sadly, I have had the same results no matter the image size/resolution.

@AlanGilbertsonI’m sure you are right about getting a “better” result, but I am also sure it is not a “quality” result.

If you refer back to my original reply (from 3/25) you will see a comparison of output between dimension and stager, both using the same model, settings and high resolution PNG decal, with noticeably different results.

This is known issue! Adobe acknowledged it months ago, they just have not fixed it. I am with @active_Sunset157F and challenge anyone with a render of a decal that looks good rendered from Stager to share it and include the settings/decal's specs you have used.

I have grown to really like Dimension for rendering packages so I thought Stager would really up my game, but wow this is BAD! I am experiencing the same issues as many above have posted - pixelated graphics, especially visible on type, on placed images.

As a simple test I opened a previous Dimension file in Stager and compared the rendered output. The file I tested uses a 300dpi PNG image placed to fill on a model of a box. All settings seemed to translate perfectly between Dimension and Stager but the output is night and day, see image attached. On the left is the file rendered by Dimension at medium quality and 72 dpi. I used the same settings in Stager. Unhappy with the results I upped the stager settings to High and 150 dpi – Still, the lower quality render from Dimension is superior.

This puts me in a real quandary as I was looking to upgrade my iMac to an M1 machine but I cannot afford to loose Dimension (still not avaialble on M1) and Stager seems to be subpar product for my specific use.

Hello, you can use Dn on a Mac M1. Dimension working fine on my M1 MAx 😉
If you have bugs or issues with Stager the best way is to report by using the uservoice  : https://feedback.substance3d.adobe.com/

And share with us the link.
On my side now i use Painter to do all my job and only stager to set up the scene and the rendering.

Hello everyone!  Jeanette from the Stager team here.  Just wanted to chime in, first to acknowledge the problem and be clear that yes there absolutely is a problem (in some cases).

In some cases it may just be that the image itself isn't high enough resolution.  Using an image that is at least 2000 x 2000 pixels will generally give good results, 4k for very large resolution product shots.  Going larger than that is usually not necessary.  One thing to note is that if you are working in a vector format, Stager rasterizes the images on input.  Be sure to set your vector file to an equivilant pixel size before importing as Stager does not have native re-rasterization at this time.

However, in most cases with this decal/image quality issue, there is indeed a bug / series of bugs happening.  The team is aware of the overall issues and have some improvements in progress and prioritized to work on next.  I wanted to apologize for the delay.  We've known about the issue for some time but have been priortizing also some work to improve overall app stability (crashes and hangs, related to rendering).

I'll update here when I have some progress to share.

Hello, still no update about this major issue?

Hi!

When I place an image on a model i get pixelated text. I've tried all imaginable formats on the artwork, and also different resoulutions. All with the same issue (see attached files)

I've found that this was an issue in Adobe Dimension. Is this still not resolved in Stager? Any workarounds?

Kind Regards

/Marcus

Usually i correct this in rendered Ps file adding sharpening. That can be a workaround...

Ares, it gets even worse with sharpening and blur makes it.......... well blurry 🙂

I was doing this kind of thing in Dimension for a while with no problem. Saw all the features of Stager and paid for a subscription. My work is in branding, and I cannot use the software (Stager) I bought for the job I do, as all branding on objects looks jagged and crunchy. I just tried replicating the scene I'm having issues with in Dimension which is included free with my CC subscription, and it renders out perfectly smooth and crisp. Not sure why I'm paying for Stager exactly? My advice to anyone here is just to go back to Dimension if you need to rescue your project. At this point, I feel like I'm paying for beta software with Stager.

I absolutly agree with this take. My work is in branding as well and I bought the substance package based on the client work that I was able to do with Dimension. I was under the impression that stager was the Dimension 2.0 that we had been waiting for and Painter, etc. seemed like great compliments. I have spent uncountable wasted hours trying to get the same results as I had in Dimension and have not been able to finished one project without returning angrily to dimension to hack it out. I also feel that Stager is a public Beta that I paid $550 believing that I would be able to recoup my investment, but in fact I have spent thousands of dollars in unbillable hours trying to make it work through crashes, never-ending renders, low res decals, and more.

I was really sold on the promise of the Stager and really want to believe in the Stager team, but I am 9 months into my very expensive year Substance contract without anything to show for it but headaches and major unbillable hours and unless they are able to fix the Stager problems AND give me a free year for the beta work I have done, I will be looking elsewhere. I really feel like adobe managment was extrordinarily greedy to sell Stager in the state that it was when released.  Shareholders may be appeased for now, but Adobe is only hurting themselves in the long run.

Hey, We are aware of the problem. The root cause is that we don’t yet support direct rendering of vector art, and we don’t yet support multiple UV sets. Consequently, right now, we must rasterize (“bake”) decals onto the base texture(s). We plan to add support for multiple UV sets, which will allow to layer decals of a different resolution than that of the base texture. We are also exploring direct rendering of vector art. Both projects are time-consuming to implement: the first one because we must support CPU and GPU rendering without degrading performance; the second one because it’s a new technology that requires applications to integrate a complex pipeline. In the meantime, increasing the resolution of the base texture should help.

FYI: This was happening even if I used a PSD image w/rasterized vector data for the materials.
