It's possible that there is more than registry changes going on, for example there may be registering of components (which would update the registry but not necessarily in a way such that cloning the registry helps). I think Adobe would probably refer you to your plug-in vendor, but that's just a guess.

Acrually, what you describe is a normal and very typical thing to do, and it is not done the way you describe. Forget all idea of directly writing the database on the user's computer unless your needs are very special and unusual. Submitting a form means to connect to a web script (CGI, ASP, PHP...) on your web server, just like for any HTML form. The web script is responsible for adding to the database.

SOAP is not actually a kind of database, it's a kind of network connection. You'd need (as well as LiveCycle Reader Extensions, please check pricing) a database which offers SOAP connections, or you'd write a server process for your database which offered SOAP connections.

Adobe Reader X is not also known as Acrobat. Adobe Reader is free and only reads PDF files. Acrobat (which includes Acrobat Pro and Acrobat Standard) is not free, and makes PDF files. Please see the link in reply 19. This is an Adobe bug. It seems to be the same bug affecting both Acrobat and Adobe Reader in their latest updates only.

Hi dave0123, mcsdesign1966, I have one more thing. Can you double check this actually happens in Acrobat or Adobe Reader? Start the app, use File > Open. I found this page http://www.iceni.com/blog/?p=468 . It's confusing but it does show you aren't alone.

Ok, that is correct as far as it goes. That's what PDF files all look like at the start. But, it seems something has damaged other parts of the file. That seems certain, since multiple software from different companies is failing. Something to do with the Mountain Lion upgrade? I hope not, but it is something in common. Here's something to check out. Pick one of these files you know well, and which you downloaded a long time ago. Now, check the modification date in Finder. Is it recent? Ok, check another, is it the same sort of time? If so, probably something/someone wrote to those files at that time. Can you remember what was happening then (e.g. was it when Mountain Lion was installed, or something else?) Meanwhile, the chances of being able to recover the files is slim. Time to look at your backups.

This is worrying; it suggests something has actually broken your PDF files. dave0123, mcsdesign1966, there's something I'd like you to try. Please start TextEdit. Pick one of the smallest PDF files, and use File > Open in TextEdit. What you see is expected to be unreadable junk. But there's good junk and bad junk! After opening it, please copy and paste the FIRST FEW lines (make sure it's the first few) into a forum post and maybe this will tell us something.

Sounds very bad. But I stand by what I said, though you may not believe it: if an ordinary app crashes the system, the app CANNOT be at fault; it must be the system or hardware. (Or something that extends the system, like a driver).

When you say the compter crashes, you mean it gets a "blue screen of death" and stops? Or something else? This is important because Windows is designed so an ordinary app like Acrobat can't crash it by accident or even deliberately, so if you do get a blue screen of death, something is badly wrong with Windows (or perhaps with the computer, since hardware faults can do it).

Your symptoms exactly match the effect of transparency without an RGB blend space, but it sounds as if that isn't the case here (especially creating from clipboard (clipboard = screen capture)?) Make sure OUTPUT PREVIEW is off. In fact, turn it on and see if the colours change, then off again and see if they change. Now, please visit the Color Management preferences in Acrobat and let us know everything on that screen.

It's worth emphasising (again?) that large amounts of text edits/adds to a PDF are not really a strength of the PDF format or Acrobat. The miracle is that we can add any text at all, and much as people want Acrobat to be like Word or InDesign it never is. Comments and page text are completely different kinds of thing, and sadly it's probably important to understand the difference between them.

One more note. As an manager of multiple systems perhaps you are already using enterprise deployment tools to manage updates etc. If so, you may be able to integrate Flash into these tools so you can maintain the same level of preparedness against threats. http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/enterprise_deployment.html On the other hand you might take the view that the greatest threat to the security of computers in a school comes from those who sit at them... depends whether these are student-side or back office.

It's not about whether a browser renders the page. It's nothing to do with obsolescence. The frequent updates aren't for functionality, they are for security. It's similar to the Windows security updates which are at least monthly, and more frequent for critical issues. Many of these are internet explorer updates. Don't confuse the little updates with the big version upgrades (e.g. IE8 to IE9). Other browsers too have frequent security updates. So, as a tech you should indeed be trackng every tiny update as rapidly as possible, to avoid exposure to malicious attacks, which are often barely days behind the fix. (Not an Adobe reply. You might consider posting Flash questions in the forums for Flash, rather than Acrobat.)

I can confirm that this is a JPEG2000 image. This is seeming more and more likely to be a security fix, but let me make it clear what I mean. I think an update to Acrobat 9 and 10 includes extra checks to JPEG 2000 data in PDF files. Perhaps the earlier version quiely ignored a problem, or perhaps there is a bug in the new checks. There are signs that this is for some people related to high resolution access to the JPEG 2000 e.g. zooming or TIFF export. This is not too hard to explain, as JPEG 2000 files might contain multiple images at different resolutions. Speculation: perhaps the older software found bad high resolution images, and ignored them using the low resolution instead. But perhaps the new software doesn't tolerate this at all. We'd really have to hear from someone at Adobe or a JPEG 2000 format expert to be sure.

I rather suspect this is the same issue as "Problems with JPEG2000 in PDF" in the Scanning & OCR forum, even though that is related to an update in Acrobat X. Clearly it wouid need test files to know more. If so, I suspect a security fix for for JPEG2000 has backfired.

When you use the Acrobat icon in Word, it does, behind the scenes, print to Adobe PDF. So I'd be hopeful that is now fixed too.

The Adobe PDF printer has an option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts". That sounds as if it would have this effect. Change it from the Printers Control Panel, restart Word.
