My sites are dynamically driven. I have only a handful of actual site pages to update. Everything else is populated by the server.
For simple static sites, file sync might be fine. But that's not how I work.

the fact of driving, or not, pages in a dynamic way does not explain the non-synchronization at all.
as you know, all my sites or applications, are built on a data driven approach, this does not prevent me from playing with the synchronization between the various servers and work folders, and that those are local, evaluation, demo partners, customer validation, and of course production...
so all the base engines that are really sensitive (generally the core front, or the BO system) are simply cloaked (wonderful feature of DW)... but all the folders of plugins, templating, configuration, etc... remain accessibles and fully subject to synchronization... what a wonder...
so I still miss your approach, and really would like to learn something
but as you said...
For me, automatic File Sync could be catastrophic.

yes, probably for you, if the architecture that you use don't allow templating, plugin, addons, external configuration, that could make sense to only work on a server base, (I still ask myself so why using DW so far) but anyway... that doesn't mean that file sync should be forbidden, to be avoided at all costs, for other users, and so OP that has question about it...
I still like to learn
