Those differences can be due to stylistic sets (for the lettering as the "new" shapes are consistent in treatment) and the numerals could be old style numerals. The spacing issue could also be down to calt or a stylistic set. So I would check the OT features after checking font revision... That said, it's a weird issue. Mike

If you select an image in ID or in the links panel, like the front-end image above, what is its effective resolution? I've done a fair amount of large format work and I have rarely used an effective resolution greater than 150 dpi when sized in the document. There are exceptions, but like I wrote, it's pretty rare. OK. I had another thought... If these articles/publications are coming from your friends web database, there may be a few other possibilites. One, which is more difficult but your friend may well be able to do it, would be to export from their database and write the ID tagged text directly. Another would be to export as Markdown text. Yet another would be raw HTML export. Using either of the last two options would make the find/replace with ID-style tags in a good text editor pretty simple.

Small caps are thus (at least in CVP10): T<SA>here<^*A*> are <SA>three<^*A*> But it is consistent no matter the tag and so are easy to pattern match if one looks at text formatted in small caps (or any other attribute) found in an ID exported sample. Which is what I do. Because I have installations of VP, I'll open the VP file, make sample paragraphs of such attributes, export as ID tagged text, then use ID's pattern for the replace part of the Perl expression(s). If there are a lot of varying attributes, I'll wrap them into a Javascript and run it all at once. But for p.styles, I usually just do the Perl f/r route. I do want to add that there are styles in VP that cannot be transitioned to any current application due to them not having the capabilities, like the option for no-break at the end of a paragraph. So there will likely always be some hands-on work to do after the text is brought into ID. Mike

VP's tagged text more resembles QXP's in their simplicity. Ventura also doesn't export the actual styling information. You really should do two things. One is to obtain a copy of a VP tagged text export and compare it to one from ID. Do note that you do not need ID's style definitions. That can all be deleted. And export ID's tagged text in the non-verbose version. What you will find in comparing the two tagged text files in a good text editor is that you can, via PERL expressions (which takes a good text editor), to reformat the Ventura style tags to that ID can use. Likely for the Body Text style you will need to actually add the style definition, I always have had to. But that too is easy in that good text editor that will become your friend. An import of such a tagged text file will create paragraph styles with the Basic style definition. Redefining those styles to what the VP or web site shows will be resusable in subsequent tagged text translations and once those styles are made, importing your translated tagged text files will result in an ID formatted file. This may all sound confusing. But it is simpler than it may sound. So again, do obtain a sample VP tagged text file so you can see how it works. Mike

What a lovely offer. Thank you! Paul's fonts are simply free and are how he wants them. Neither on DeviantArt nor his blog does he mention donations. I've passed along your thanks and have linked to this thread. I never have used TypeKit/Adobe Fonts when I have subscribed. I kinda dislike subscriptions and the possibilities of not having access to work or fonts/assets should I allow my subscription expire—I only subscribe to ID if/when I have a job I have to use a current version and that is not very often. Last time was a bit after CC began, actually. I mainly use CS6 for any ID work I get. So I don't really know the ins & outs of working with Adobe fonts as a subscription. All the best, Mike

OK. I went and looked. The commercial, and perhaps updated, version of Museo Slab (and likely the sans) does have arbitrary fractions available. The whole family is pretty reasonable at $99USD from Fontspring. https://www.fontspring.com/fonts/exljbris/museo-slab I didn't look at the version via Typekit (if you have a subscription, I don't have a current one).

Oops. I guess I only looked at the Cadman code. It does do arbitrary fractions. But Kelvinch, which uses ligatures, does do common (and uncommon) fractions. Like I mentioned, Cadman does do arbitrary fractions. If Kelvinch would work for you, I can ask Paul to either insert his fraction code from Cadman into it or offer to do it myself. His license permits me (or whomever) to do it as long as the reserved font name changes so there wouldn't be an issue. It shouldn't take very long to do. Most foundries do not have the code rolled-in for arbitrary fractions. At best, some have an expanded ligature offering like Kelvinch uses. Most have few fractions using the ligature option. I am sure there are other OpenSource fonts using arbitrary fraction coding. But I wouldn't know where to look on FontSquirrel or Google fonts to narrow them down. Mike

Hi Marina, To tell the truth, I usually either receive tagged text files that I manipulate via PERL regular expressions, or a Word file that I export to tagged text and do the same. In ID, it can also be done via GREP find/replace. I would not suggest a Replace All. It will still take a bit to find, then replace, then find, replace, etc. But it should work. What the find expression does is look for the presence (pattern) of a digit then space then digit. It doesn't capture the first expression, only the space and digit. Then replaces the space for a thin space and the first digit. It could be further enhanced by not capturing the digit following the space. Mike

I usually use a non-breaking thin space between the whole number and fraction. But it depends upon the point size in the ingredient list. If the point size is larger than I normally use, then I'll insert a non-breaking hair space. I'm not a fan of zero space between whole numbers and the fraction.

Finally, I was speaking for myself when I said it wasn’t worth it to spend time on, but I at least offered a suggestion…something nobody else bothered to do. Er. Somebody did offer a suggestion before I wrote my reply to Steve. As I have reinstalled my and my wife's system a couple few times since Win10 arrived (I do clean installs every once in a while due to alpha & beta testing frequently), and CS6 just installs fine and runs fine, all I have is my experience for which to respond to Steve. I have no idea whether fixing the OS will resolve the issue or not. But it is the proper first step. This is my last post to this thread unless the OP comes back. Pat yourself on the back, Bob.

Your diatribe isn't "very helpful," either. I was answering Steve in particular, not the OP. And while I have been a lifelong Windows user, and owned a tech support company, I would't still classify myself as an expert, even if it was written as a self-depreciating statement. I don't know who marked winterm's answer as correct, but it was done. Cannot remember if it was so when I responded or not. It is clearly a Windows issue and as Exploder has issues, it likely has nothing to do with CS6's ability or lack thereof to run "just fine" on Win10 of whatever favor. I myself am using Win10 Pro. My wife's computer is Win 10 Home and it works fine on it. Even so, you and winterm are correct. It is not supported on Win10. And should the OP resolve the Windows issues, and if the OP is still having issues, we (likely not you) may be able to aid the OP. And a fwiw, it is evidently "worth the bother" for the OP.

After a few weeks, another designer and I had made up a catch-phrase Bingo card and passed them out to 20 or so of the 54 employees for a particular weekly meeting. Yep. Someone actually hollered Bingo! during the meeting. The meetings were so full of pointless marketing phrases/words that making Bingo took minutes. (I still shudder when I read the word Synergy in company press releases.) I haven't subscribed in quite a while so haven't seen these sayings but I always shut off Welcome screens in everything that uses them anyway. I actually know what I want to do when I start an application and would, if I used such a Welcome screen, find these sayings annoying. I thank y'all for providing amusement for my first cup of Joe on this Saturday morning!

Oh, yeah. I forgot a couple other things... There is a missing paragraph style reference in the sample above. If this omission in the above sample is actually present in the real file sample, no worries. But you may need to add this one: <DefineParaStyle:CourseFees> Also, upon the first import using the p.style names as given in the sample file you were sent, do change the option shown in winterm's screen shot for the Resolve Text Style Conflicts Using: Publication Default to the tagged text file. Then once you have altered the styles in preparation of the main tagged text import, set it back to as shown in winterm's screen shot. Think that covers it. For now, anyway...

I export tagged text from Word and many clients supply it. I generally use Em Software's tagged text plug-in, but it isn't needed for this type of work. What you may find is that you will become good friends with a decent text editor that allows for GREP (Regular Pattern Expressions for Find/Replace). There are a few issues with that tagged text. I don't know if it just the forum software added empty paragraphs or not, nut if it is in the source, you need to remove them in the text editor. The control codes are improperly written and one is absolutely not wanted/necessary. The control code <0x0013> should just be globally deleted. The control code <0x0009> has to be written (all Unicode codes) thus: <\U+0009> It is just the last four digits of the Unicode value that have to be present, plus the backslash and U+ This code is for a tab character. The paragraph styles are properly listed, but are not defined. This is how I prefer to receive tagged text (and 99.9% of the time do receive it this way). Once you lace the tagged text file, the paragraph styles will be listed like so: I have a word selected just so you can see that in the paragraph panel, the SectionTitle is highlighted as it should be (I couldn't just capture the cursor well). You then set up the styles as desired. So here I have simply changed that SectionTitle p.style like so: And then do the others (along with all the requisite p.style parameters. Should you need any help, do just pop back into the thread. And it would be best if a sample of the actual tagged text be Zipped and uploaded to say dropbox or the like and a download link provided. The only way I know of is to use the clip to frame to stop the spill out. But in your code paragraph style, try setting a negative baseline shift. Screen shot is done in something else as I don't have a current subscription. You could also maybe use a rule above using Paper color, but you would need two code paragraph styles, one for the first paragraph, another for the remainder and hook 'em together to be able to use Apply Next. 90% of every book manuscript I do starts as tagged text (typically out of Word or a database). Doesn't matter if the tagged text is going into ID or Q. I use TT (tagged text) for more than books as well, such as price lists (in conjunction with data merges via Em Software's data merge & TT solutions), posters destined for hospital hallways, etc. I would hate to return to XML for these jobs as it simply isn't as flexible/extensible. But while Q has updated its TT (slowly over time), it is still way behind what current versions can produce. ID should perhaps update its TT as well to what newer versions are capable of. Heck, both applications need to for that matter.

Like mentioned above, contact the font author via his web site. There are the unicode slots for the fi/fl ligatures but both slots have a question mark in them. Evidently, even though there is no OT Feature code, ID is faking it because those two unicode slots are both present and have something drawn in them. Mike

Oops. I guess I should have looked first. Canva personnel simply report to a user asking for the capability that it's a good idea...Sorry for getting your hopes up! It can be rebuilt and so be a bit more trustworthy in AI. I personally would trust embedding unless I inspected the PDF out of AI really well. Heck, the Canva PDF is so bad that neither Acrobat or pdfToolbox can convert the fonts to curves without severe issues. Never seen that before. It took me about 5 minutes to redo. Mike

That Canva PDF is all munged up as regards the Bromello and (likely) Univers font, mainly in the encoding. Quickest way out of the issue other than what you have done is to convert the text to curves before exporting from Canva. Or just use Illy to make that stuff (assuming you have control over the generating application) in the first place. I remade it in something else and the PDFs with live text work just fine in ID, QXP, etc. Mike

What Bob wrote... Also note that a password protected document can have the restrictions removed with any one of a whole bunch of restriction removers. If someone wants the content, they can get it. PW-protection is akin to locks on doors—they keep honest people honest. But that's it. It may not be an issue with your clients. I dunno. But if not, then there is little incentive to bother with PW protection. Unless you just want to encourage them not to tamper with your PDFs. But that's all it is.

Your XML needs reformated and some empty tags (both opening and closing) removed. As it is, there is nothing to tell ID that your bullets are separate paragraphs. I don't know where this data comes from, but if it is a database it can be configured to output the bullet paragraphs as individual paragraphs. Else you are gong to need an XSLT to transform the XML into how you want it. To fit the screen shot, I needed to reduce my window in my XML editor and turn wrap on. But it needs to be like this...unless I am mistaken about the problem.

I assume you are using styles. It's under the Basic section I believe. Or use Bill's screen second shot (the wide one) and update the paragraph style being used. On that screen shot and in the paragraph style entry, if you see parenthesis around the leading value, that means it is automatic leading (a percentage). There's reasons to use that setting, right up until there isn't (like in your case). Mike

Is you leading a percentage? If you set it to a discrete amount, e.g., 11pt, then the leading should not grow to accommodate the subscripts (or superscripts if there are any). Mike
