Thanks, Nancy, 20 years with website, never known that. But I'm artist idiot... Someone, SEO guy I think a did a mini audit a month ago, and said I have mixed http:// and www, and http without slashes. Where do I see that, and how easy to fix. Bit over my head. Will fixing it effect my search result links when people click on search results-- ie, create 404's? I see ht access file in there. Did I put that there in past or automated by DW? Not conversant how to use it. (in fact I think it's invisible in Mac finder, isn't that nice!)

and in Mac finder, never any www. or http ever in file names. some end with htm some end with html never understood why 2 endings. But when they go live on web then I see http:// or just www. or sometimes just file name...

Nancy, I have those 4 folders, but not at top, alphabetical. I have an index. html also for years, that becomes the homepage. No, I don't see my domain name inside that list, but when I click on files there I see the domain name with the full http://www etc in the properties bar fields.

super confusing by computer. My files names am I looking in Dreamweaver or the finder? I see everything. mostly http:// www.mysite.com This should be adjust in DW before doing this then? Cannot understand Wolfs writing I think I have absolute links, again this is super confusing. Isn't funny how whoever designed the internet made is such a mess of conflicting options?

I'm under impressions that when go SSL all files names (I see with my own eyes in the bar have S), saying the thousands of files names on my server wont have an S put into them)?, and the files names on my local copy eventually wont have S in them? Help me out... And then why when I just did a redirect on site with S, that bookmarked link is now nsecure (and vanishing from Google results)

Wolf, very hard to understand that. If you have a private email, phone, would love to hear about it live.. Thanks Nancy that is comforting. My site had thousand inner files, and also now 6 wordpress subsites inside. I got a walk up call, because in reverse, I got rid of a site that had SSL on in and did a redirect to my current main site that does not. But whien I click on bookmarks for it one gets "non secure site page".. Godaddy, says I now have to put SSL on that site and do a force redirect. Not had time yet. A consultant has said to me " I've read about sites that lost half their organic traffic for months, although I haven't seen that happen myself "

Thanks, I get two versions. One is total nightmare where thousands of my new SSL pages will have broken padlocks because many of the elements are not SSL well yet, and worse the hundreds of current search results all need thousands of manual redirects, and come up 404 until that is done -- losing biz. But my old SEO consultant I spoke with today said he can do this simply with his developer-- automated in which everything easily should come out roses as Osgood is implying. (I've been scared my an article I read -- few years old, suggesting the former situation)

Thanks Nancy none of this help. My site has thousands of inner pages and and sub wordpress sites, blog.. And I just go off the phone with someone in the biz and he says, even after the SSL. many of pages with have 1/2 a palock and elements may need to be fixed, and worse, the hundreds of search hundred of results will get 404s. Total nightmare. Is there any consultant service that can help?

None of this is helping at all as this is totally over my head and I have thousands of inner pages that will not work the minute the SSL does work that is if whoever I hire can even do the first part ok. Godaddy who host is worthless. They charge a lot and know nothing. I've talked to 5-6 reps. If anyone knows a great service I'll pay.

Thanks Jon great answer, I now have a new apprentice, so we'll examine and see if it's case. probably is. Funny, old apprentice -- put the code for a logo but not the main image.. ugh. Now if this is the case how hard is it to undo? At some point we may open each page one by one to upgrade text and metadata and boost up, so then we could fix at that point..

I had an apprentice a year ago; update all my old html pages for mobile, they are now mobile friendly. But I noticed something today. All the main image alt tags are gone. Something between the css style sheet and the html file.. it does not seem the file has that image info on it anymore. How does this work? I'm mostly ignorant of CSS. The html file now points to an image in the assets folder, so the image (unlike before when I manually dragged image onto the html page), the alt tag is not there?

In the first field I get no link to this site found. Yet there are 1500 links to what I want to change from so, I'm stumped to why this happens. I solved it once by doing reboot of the software, but still happening again.
