it's not whether the pen tool is good enough, it's whether you are with a car like that, it is helpfully angular and there are lots of parts that could act as useful guides. so i think it wouldn't be too difficult to come up with something of a similar quality to your reference images.

did you draw this? there are several ways of making accurate rounded corners. i'd probably draw these as right-angles and then use the live corners to drag out curves -- if you're using a version of illustrator from CC2013 on. if you want symmetry, it might be best to draw one half first and then copy and reflect it.

yeah they changed the align to pixel grid thing; you can now see the options via here (top right in the control bar): getting inconsistent results myself. sometimes i end up with two points, sometimes one.
