Does InDesign have the equivalent of Symbols in Illustrator? I would like to create a group of elements that I can reproduce throughout my document in such a manner that changing one of the instances of that group automatically updates all of them. For example, I have created a simple double-sided template for generating tabs. I have set the front and the back of the tab as two pages in a spread. I place an image inside a clipping path for the front of the tab. I add some text where the label goes. I use both Object Styles and Paragraph Styles to ensure consistency and I get the front of my first tab configured the way I want it. Now, to get the back to exactly match the front but in reverse, I have to copy all the elements and paste them into the second page of the spread. I then flip all the elements from their center coordinates horizonally. Then, I just select the text elements and flip them vertically so they read correctly. But when I go to make changes to the front of the tab, if I forget to make changes to the back of the tab, It's a mess. It would be great to have a relationship between the front and the back such that when I updated the front of the tab, the changes appeared on the back of the tab as well. I think of it is a symbolic link of sorts, where rather than pasting a copy of an element, you paste a link to that element. Then transforming the linked content (not editing it) doesn't change the content, it just changes how the content is displayed. However, changing the content anywhere would change it everywhere. So in my tab example, I copy and past my tab fronts to the second page in the spread for each tab position in the Parents Panel. I use transforms to modify the linked copies of the front elements to flip them around as necessary. Then, when I create an instance of Tab 1:4 Parent, I ctrl-shift click an element to make it editable and modify the front only. The back would automatically update. Thios would be great for thumbnails where you could have your source image and then the thumbnails somewhere else in the doument would be scaled down instances of the original. If your thuymbs are separate files, you run the risk of changing the image and having the wrong thumb file for it's unrelated thumb. This same sort of thing could be used for form letters where someone edits a text object and everywhere that information is needed on the form, it would automatically be updated bwcause everywhere else that was used, it was simply an instance of the original. Before I submit a feature request, is there some way to do this now that I am unaware of? Thanks for any input.

Simply doesn't work. I am trying to alphabetize a TOC based on Recipe Names and it gets all the recipes, but refuses to alphabetize them. In fact, as best I can tell, they aren't in numerical order by page nor are they in alphabetical order by name. It's as though they have randomized the entries.

So after learning so much from this thread about TOC, I decided that I wanted to create a master set of styles that worked in every document. I created the styles in advanced and literally every single object had an object styles and paragraph style if necessary. I even created TOC styles for each Chapter and different Styles for the Recipe Index and the front TOC. Then I rebuilt the entire document, all 10 chapters to be identically configured. I put meta data in ALL of the images (cutlines for photos and recipe titles for recipes). So I could live caption them. Everything worked great. However,now when I try to create the alphabetized TOC entry (Recipe Index) at the back of the book, it refuses to alphabetize and all of the entries come out in completely random order. I can't find any logic behind it. I get all the entries, just not alphabetically. Any Ideas? When I copy and paste the content into a text editor, rather than the standard \r\n endofline characters, they have CTRLF added. Any ideas why this would be?

I found the problem with indexing the styles applied by the chapter TOC that I generated. Some of the styles were getting duplicated between chapters. So one chapter would have Main > SectionTitle and another would just have SectionTItle. By setting up synchronization and ensuring that only one SectionTItle Paragraph Format was used in all chapter documents, I could create the TOC entry for each chapter and allow it to title the TOC with the paragraph style SectionTitle. Doing this foir all 10 chapters+the final "Recipe index" allowed me to easily automatie the book TOC by simply indexing the SectionTItle paragraph styles across the entire book. In othoer words, I never have to manually enter the SecitonTitle elements for each chapter because they are automatically added by the TOC. The problem I am having now is with adding js. When I generate the final index (alphabetic sort, full page, based on recipeTitles), I want to insert paragraphs every time the first letter in the TOC entry changes. I wrote the JS to do it in CodePen so that I could paste the resulting TOC text into a <div>element, push a button and copy the result (with the new paragraphs added at each change in first letter). I tried applying that to the InDesign DOM and running the script fromt he scripts panel but it didn't work. I don't have my VS Code debug environment setup and the documentation on Adobe Developer's site is sketchy at best. Lots of 404 errors, terrible useless example scripts, no explanation of how toi configure VSCode. So if you have nay pointers or know of any good sites that explain how to access the InDesign JS API, I'm all ears. Also if you know how to insert a text varialbe that contains a calculation, (regex) that would be breat. I can create captions for the recipe images and I can insert the filename variable, but it gives me the document filename (with or without an extension). But using the imageName variable doesn't give that option, it always has the extension. If I could remove the extension when definitng a text varialble, my project would be somuch better. I understand that it will be sampled down when I export to jpg for a web app that requests jpgs 150 ppi. I was thinking by sampling down the images prior to importing them, the resampling would be better (as Photoshop offers more resampling options) and the export would be faster and easier for InDesign. I was experimenting when I came across this previously unknown behavior., that's why I asked if it was the expected behavior or if not, was it a bug. What I find ironic is that the Export to jpg option in InDesign allows you to set the target ppi (and provides the common standards for web images (300, 150, 96, 72) as presets. Then, when you open the exported jpgs created in InDesign, Photoshop lists the images as their intended ppi and dimensions not the 72ppi and resulting pixel dimensions. The behavior seems to be the opposite of how Photoshop exports jpgs.

Thanks for the explanation. It seems weird to me that in the Export As dialog, you are asked the physical dimensions and the ppi you wish to export as. Then it completely ignores what you put in those fields and just saves the actual pixels without telling you. I get why they did it, but they could at least have done the math and let you know tha that the new physical dimensions of your exported jpg were ____ x ____ and the resolution was 72ppi. I, apparently mistakenly, assumed that the physical dimensions and the preferred ppi would be saved in the jpg meta data (like they are when saving a copy as a jpg) so that it would be easier for other apps to rely on the physical dimensions. I was experimenting with using jpgs in InDesign to make it easier to Export to jpg for a web app that requested 150 ppi jpg documents. It thought maybe it would generate the images faster if the linked images were already 150 ppi and in jpg format. Then the web app I was playing with could create an interactive flip book from the resulting images. Needless to say, none of this went as expected since importing the .jpg versions of the content were twice the physical dimensions and half the resolution of their .psd counterparts. I'm sure there's a reason why Adobe chose not to include the intended ppi and dimensions in the jpg meta data, but it still seems weird to me. Photoshop looks for that same data when importing a jpg, why not export it as well? Why would they make you "save a copy" to include the intended information? Why even ask the ppi and dimensions you wish to export if they aren't including that in the document somewhere? Thanlks for the information and explanation.

In my last book, I thought I would get ahead of the game by standardizing the size and resolution of all of the images I was importing. So rather than sizing to fit, they would come setup at the right size. When I did this with .psd documents, they would import at their correct size and dpi. But when I decided to make a web-compatible version by converting all the images to .jpg at 150dpi, they imported into InDesign at 73dpi. Even opening them in Photoshop shows them as 72dpi when Photoshop was the app I used to resize them. Is this expected behavior? A bug in Photoshop, a bug in InDesign ? I've worked around the issue, but wandered for future reference.

Basically, I was hoping to have the Section TOC (which lists hidden "Recipe Title" paragraph styles (see figure 1) where I would set the title of the section in the title of the TOC file (styled with "Section Title"). Figure 1 - Section TOC - Created by indexing only the Recipe Titles in each section.   Then, when all 10 sections had their own TOC styles that just indexed recipes in their section, I could go to the front of the book and generate a new TOC for the entire book. This table of contents would reference the "Section Title" paragraph styles just created for each section when I setup each section's TOC. (figure 2) Then I also index the recipe names alphabetically for the entire book at the end in the Recipe Index TOC. (figure 3) Figure 3 - Index TOC - Created by indexing all of the Recipe Titles alphabetically in the entire book. The problem is that I could not reference the automatically created paragraphs using the "Section Title" paragraph style that the TOC function creates. Instead, I had to leave the titles for each TOC blank and manually add a separate frame with the manually entered name of the section to apply the "Section Title" style for the book TOC. I wondered why the TOC generator can't reference the Section Titles created by the TOC generators for each section. Thanks for your help again.

Thanks again for all the help with my last project. It still has some bugs, but I am about to finish my ULTIMATE TEMPLATE with highly organized and uniformly applied Object, Paragraph, and Character Styles.. I just have a couple of questions before I am ready to use it. Currently, I have a scanned image of a handwritten recipe that I place (with caption) in my content pages. Why on earth does InDesign have you manually place the caption after the image? I like my captions grouped with my images and was hoping they would just honor the caption style when you placed a new image. (I know put it in feedback). I click the caption and then apply the appropriate Object Style to both the image and the caption, then group the two. I then have to edit the caption since, by default, it is the filename of the image (including the file extension). Is there any way to get it to drop the extension automatically? The Caption created when placing an image is a static caption. Is there a way to define a text variable that knows the filename without the file extension, so I could just create dynamic captions automatically? After I get the recipe image and caption situated, I need to hide the caption. Since the layer information is not included in the Object Style (which seems really stupid) and since visibility is not a configurable option in Object Styles, I have to manuyally manage hiding the layer with the caption. Is there any better way to make the recipe name (image document name minus file extension) dynamically appear when an object sttyle is applied? Also, do the caption settings pertain to each image or all images? If I setup a caption one way for one catagory of images (say photos) where I want the text centered and visible, can I setup the caption differently for other images using the Caption setup menu? How is that inormation stored/retreieved since its not listed in Object Styles. And the final question...when generating a TOC, if you apply a Paragraph Style to the Title through your book (one TOC with title in every section), shouldn't you be able to use that Paragraph Style to create a TOC at the beginning? So if I have 5 chapters that all have TOC (for their chapter) and the TOC is styled as chapterTitle, shouldn't I be able to then create a new TOC for the entire book that looks up all of the chapterTitle entries and provide a TOC based on their page numbers? To solve the problem (unsatisfyingly), I manually set the chapter titles to generate tje TOC or the book. I was hoping it would do it all for me. I'm excited to be wrapping this up so I can share it. Seriously at $80 per month for a subscription, I had better be producing a heck of a lot of HTML using inDesign. While people keep referring to this amazing and free plugin, it appears that they caught the greed bug and now they are charging for it. And by charging, I mean they are not just charging a one time fee to ise their script, they are charging $30/month for their cheapest tier (if you pay annaually). and $50 for their recommended subscription fee. That's per month, mind you. And in fact, that's more than I pay for the entire Adobe Creative Suite. While I am sure this has been a good answer in the past, I was hoping someone would revisit it since this is simply intennable for most small InDesign users who would like to generate some HTML from InDesign. Either that or Adobe should top advertising a service they only marginally provide. Any other suggestions?

@Robert at ID-Tasker I followed your advice and created the following structure as a Book: There are basically 3 parts to the book. The FrontMatter, the MainContent, and the BackMatter. The MainContent is divided into 10 Sections with single word titles of food groups (i.e. Breads, Meats, etc) I created the following documents: 00 FrontMatter 01 Appetizers ;;; 10 Cookies 11 BackMatter I added all 12 documents to the Book. Each of the MainContent sections (01-10) has a similar format. I created a header spread and a content spread. (See images) The header spread contains an empty text frame (for the section TOC) and the content pages are blank with page numbers and some graphic headers/footers.. Section Header Parent Spreads Sample Section Header Parent Spread-Contains a formatted (unlocked) text box to hold the TOC Section Content Parent Spreads Section Content Parents - With page numbers--all layers locked. Section Spreads Section Spreads. The Header Spread comes first, then I import the images into the Content Spreads adding Static Captions for each using the Recipe Title paragraph style. This allows me to then go to the header page and insert a TOC. I set the title of the TOC to the name of the section and the paragraph style to Section Title and tell it to find the Recipe Titles for content. After doing this for all content sections, I return the 00 FrontMatter file and generate a Table of Contents for the Book indexing the Section Titles (created by the TOC entries for each section). Then in the 11 BackMatter document, I create another TOC that indexes the Recipe Titles and alphabetizes them for the entire book. I'll label it Recipe Index. I was hoping to create an Alphabetic Index instead of a TOC at the end of the book. So, I'll manually Add the letters into the TOC to make it look like an index. Does this seem like a reasonable plan? I'm about halfway through importing the recipes from Version 1. So if there are any other suggestions, let me know. Thanks for the Book suggestion. I created a document with parent pages for each of my 10 sections. The title page for each section contains a textbox with the title entered and styled as "Section Title' in paragraphs styles. When it was one document with 10 sections, I could generate the TOC using the Section Title style with no problems. But then I had to break each section out into its own document. I created 10 Stykes called recipe 1 thought recipe 10. Then in section 1, I applied the Recipe 1 style to all of the Caption elements on each recipe image I scanned in. That way I could generate Static Captions for each recipe automatically and use the Create Table of Contents feature in each section to list the recipes for each section. Worked like a charm. So I used the same document and saved it 10 times. (this guaranteed the same paragrapjh styles and parent pages for each section). Then I deleted all of the extra pages except for each section. I created a new Book and added all 10 sections. I went to the first section called FrontMatter and attempted to add a Table of Contents usng the Section Title style and checked the Include Book Documents box. It gave me only the "Contents' page which I accidentally forgot to remove the Section Tit;le style from. It skipped all of the other documents. Why would that be? They are all styled exactly the same (since they came from the same source document). Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

@Robert at ID-Tasker Thanks again for your help.. I figured I would apply different styles for each section then run a new TOC for each section. I have already created the Parent Page items for all 9 sections (both header and content pages) and have a special style for the Section Title text allowimg me to easily do the TOC for the sections (in the front of the book). I make a text frame that won't print, but contains the title of the recipes, if I go to create a new TOC for the section title page (which includes only the recipes in that section), it updates my book TOC. Are you only allowed to create one TOC per document? I would like a TOC for each section as well as a TOC for the book (listing sections) then have all of that compiled into a Index at the back of the book. Do I have to divide my file into separate sections to handle the TOC for each section? But then, how do I combine the sections into one final document for the master TOC/Index. I tried doing Recipe 1 (style for section 1 TOC) and Recipe 2 (style for section 2 TOC) but that didn't work. Perhaps there is another way? And wIth the TOC, do I have to manually generate this each time there's an update? Or does it automatically track new entries for me? Also, do you know where to get the scripting reference for InDesign? I keep looking for it but can't find it. I'm pretty good with JS, but need the documentation for the specifcl model used by InDesign. I figure I could pretty easily write a script to gather the information I need and generate the TOCs per section like I want. Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.

I have a lot of images that represent handwritten recipes. Each recipe (photo) has a title to it. I would like to be able to create a master index of these titles for the end of the book. I'd also like to create small table of content pages for the beginning of each section. How do I add a Title to my images (just the data, not text and not a caption) that can be collected and the page number associated with the Object be returned? Do I need a script for this? I'm quickly approaching 250+ pages and manually indexing all of these recipes seems like too much work, especially when reorganizing pages. Surely, someone has done something like this before and has a suggestion of the easiest way to manage this automatically. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have about 4 different formats for images that I am importing into inDesign as part of a book project. I was hoping to create an object that would contain A photo/caption and a graphic element, then create another object that shows only part of a photo with no caption and a little graphic element, then another object that has just a full page photo. Then as I lay out the page, I figured I could drag an instance of one of these objects onto my page where I could customize lt (like symbols in Illustrator that you break the link to or even Gutenberg Blocks in WordPress). The idea is that this would preserve consistency of layout in the content pages. I've looked at Object Styles and that doesn't cut it. Does InDesign offer any sort of "asset management" or "symbol pallet" or "content template" to do this? Does anyone know of a plugin that does this? Also, is does anyone know of a plugin that would either create a pallet or modify the pages pallet that would allow you to group pages into visual hierarchies. It would be great to grab all the pages in a chapter and drop them in a fold called Chapter X, then grap all of the Chapters and put them in a Sections folder. Or even just ways of separating the frontmatter from the backmatter from the main content. Are there any tools like this out there? Thanks in advance for any suggestons. Also, if there are some really useful plugins that I am missing, feel free to let me know. I'm just returning to inDesign after years of focus on Illustrator and Photoshop, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

@Peter Spier I think you are assuming that I plan to print this with folded edges. I do not wish to print with folded edges. as each page will be die cut. When I say die cut, I mean that a customized spine die that I made will be used to cut the pages so that they can be used with the ARC or DISC binding system. So basically, each page will be printed double sided as it's own page with 4 sided bleeds. The way I would normally do it is to set the left page template as a single page and the right page template as a single page. Then layout my entire book as single pages. When doing this, ,I noticed that I was having a hard time keeping track of the pages that I wanted to span a spread. P.l,us when swtiching content, I had to manually track Left and Right pages rather than letting inDesign handle it for me through facing pages I was hoping to use the spreads layout feature of inDesign so I could see my visual spreads and have things like section headers and page numbers align correctly automatically using single template, but have the pages printout with their own indiividual bleeds. So when you say "Split any spread with bleeds", that's probably what I am looking for. How do I do that when the document is finished so that I can take advantage of the spreads UI for layout but split them out for prinhting?

@Robert at ID-Tasker I'm sorry, but I am not sure how to be more exact her. The final printed document is 5.5 x 8.5. Every page bleeds on all four sides. Sad, really. I was honestly hoping this wouldn't get shoved into the never to be seen again ideas bin. I do a great deal of color work and even worked on a handbook and training videos for color adjustment in criminal defense and photo forensics. I am not afraid of making adjustments to colors when I know what a photo needs. That's not the value of the variations tool. People who don't understand that it's literally all about the UI that made it great. Sure it was nothing special in terms of the result it applied, but the process was what made it so great. Being able to incrementally adjust things by selecting the image that looks the best out of a selection is useful UI. That's why they use it in all the neural filters. And for creative things that simply can't be predicted by applying color theory, a visual choice of color adjustments that you hadn't considered can be really valuable. For example, when the variations tool suggests a color adjustment that you hadn't selected, you can simply click on the incremental image and explore what the image would look like before applying it. You can goi down some great rabbit holes that end up with some great effects just by visually selecting the incremental adjustment. I'm not suggesting that it replace the existing (though limited themselves) color adjustment tools that already exist, in fact this would simplly be another way to apply those adjustments. It would be a simple set of formulas to reproduce your chosen adjustments as adjustment layers that you could explore to learn more about how to use those tools directly. It would literally be another simple way to apply the existing color transforms that a lot fo people would use. But now that is has been moved, the conversation is over and y'all win. That's the problem with the idea voting system. It gets filed away and people don't have time to go through all the ideas. By getting enough people discussing the topic, you can drive them to an idea. But I am hoping that somehow someone with some compassion and a deep understanding of how great the variations tool was will speak to their buddy who happens be a dev and the next thing you know, people all over are celebrating Photoshop rather than grumbling about new features. Thanks for your reminder about ideas, I'm hoping a robust discussion draws more attention than the ideas pile.

When I last attempted this project, I was under the gun and unable to understand some of the UI choices made by InDesign. Now that I am starting over, I would like to be sure that I am approaching this from the right perspective. I am creating a book with a final size of 5.5" wide by 8.5" tall. All pages bleed on all four sides. When I set the document size to 5.5 x 8.5 with facing pages and then print the pages to my double-sided laser printer, I expect the document to print page 1 with page 2 on the back. The front-to-back registration when I center the page for output is perfect. However, if the left page bleeds on four sides and the right page does the same, by laying it out in spreads (facing pages), I end up with a problem where page 2 (left) doesn't show the right-side bleed (instead it shows the right page's left side bleed). Page 3 prints fine (because it overlapped page 2 on the left). Layout Not Printing Correctly as individual pages for spreads In the picture, the pages are laid out in InDesign as facing pages. When output as individual pages, however, the spread content overrides the page content and so the right edge of Page 2 is bad. Is there any way to fix this or do I just have to forsake using the facing pages feature in InDesign? Is there a better way to layout this book? Any suggestions?

I realize this is not a direct channel to the Developers, but perhaps if enough people talk about it, they will get wind that this simple request could make a lot of people really happy and wouldn't take a lot of work, there could at least be some feedback or discussion amongst the developers that could make a lot of Photoshop users so much happier. Rather than the next neural filter that emulates body temperature by controlling the amount of sweat on a humanoid-like character (a feature exactly no one wants but should be out any day now), perhaps you should consider returning the most beloved and most used tool in Photoshop from its antiquity: THE VARIATIONS TOOL For those of you too young to remember this tool, let me describe it. It was simply a grid of adjustments that you could apply to your images or to your selection/layer/etc. The grid would have the standard axes that determined adjustment types. There was a scale bar that determined the scale of individual adjustment and 3 columns of 3 rows of your image with the original in the very center. So for example if the top axis was HUE, you could see the left column of images adjusted -%hue and the right column +%hue. If the vertical axis was Brightness, you could see -%brightness applied to the first row and +%brightness to third row. So at any time, you could make visual adjustments to your image by selecting any of the 8 surrounding images (with your current image in the middle). So if you wanted the image darker, pick from the first row. If you wanted darker, but no hue shift, you'd pick the first row (-%brightness) and the middle image which is your source image (for hue). Clicking one of the surrounding image choices makies it the current image and allows you to continue adjusting until the middle image looks the way you want it to look. The claims the original developers hid behind when they removed it without consideration of what people wanted: It was destructive -- Solution: make it non destructive by applying adjustment layers using the same tool. THAT SHOULD BE THE END OF THE DISCUSSION. Real experts should know how to use the other tools better -- this really angered me because photoshop is not just for experts. THAT SHOULD END THE DISCUSSION. Sometimes, you need some inspiration and are looking for color combinations or manipulations that you wouldn't have thought of otherwise. Seeing a pallet of options is much more convenient that trying each of the filters (hue, brightness, etc.) and hoping you come up with something new. END OF DISCUSSION. It made photoshop less professional -- now that we have AI enhancements that GIVE YOU VISUAL PRESETS to choose from, perhaps we can have those devs sit back down--you aren't impressing anyone with your knowledge of fine color adjustment in content that is not photographic in nature. Creative content needs different variations than photographic content. And who are you to determine the best way for me to work? That's ridiculous. Since the advent of AI filters, users are given examples that can be applied or removed at any time. We want the same brilliant options for the Variations tool. UPDATES TO THE VARIATIONS TOOL: Scalable Preview Thumbs Ideally, the grid would be expandable so that there were more options for larger monitors. This could be controlled by fitting thumnails to the window size or by selecting the thumbsize using the size dragging UI accessory already available consistently throughout Photoshop. Selectable Axes with Selectable Sub Axes For image adjustment attributes like HUE, the + column would allow you to select a type of hue adjustment (+red%) the same would be true with the minus column (-blue%) Scalable Adjustment per Axis When adjusting brightness as vertical and hue as horizontal, the rate of change between the preview thumbnails should be configurable per axis. So I could do a 10% vertical (brightness) adjustment while allso doing a 30% hue adjustment horizontally. Library Presets When you get an adjustment for an image to look a specific way, you should be able to click a button to define a new Graphic Style or prefereably a new VARIATIONS STYLE that would make it super easy to adjust images using these same parameters. Much like Camera Style adjustments apply adjustments based on Camera Presets, this would allow cusom "Camera preset" equivalents that you could create based on your shooting environment, your creative idea, your personal preference, etc. Adjustment Output Preferences If I want the adjustments that I just created to be applied to my image in a lossy format, that should be my choice. But other formats like (Adjustment lLayers, Graphic Styles, Lossless Layer Styles, or Styles Filters) should be selectable as well, leaving the original artwork untouched. Also, "apply styles in new layer" would allow you to add a layer based on these adjustments already applied (or not).All of this is super easy to offer. Multi-Step Modifications Sometimes, I adjust my images in one way, then afterwards adjust them using another related but different methodology. I don't have to understand how Hue and Color are related, I know that I like to adjust something with a little hue and then from the adjusted image, adjust the color (whether that affects the hue or not). I like them to be separatable and applicable/removable much like layer styles. Having a button that establishes milestones or one-of-many adjustmetns in your variation you wish you to apply would be ideal. Especially considering that setting this up as a graphic style base, you could easily change your entire scene's color adjustments by simply changing the styles VARIATIONS PRESET for that graphic style. Saving a VARIATION PRESET with multiple variations steps would be a great resource. You could even allow a button that simplified the variations by just offering the resulting adjustment. In other words, any competing adjustments between colors and hues, brightness and vividness, etc. would all be resolved into a single adjustment by combining the steps into one step. Now that the majoirty of high-level phtoshop filters have built-in methods that give you muyltiple options, COLOR VARIATIONS should do the same. Even after you select the options for the neural filters, the plugin offers 3 variations that you could not have come up with without the AI. This entire notion that giving customers options is a bad idea has obviously been proven to be utterly ridiculous. Considering how easy it would be to solve any of the problems the original devs had with the Variations tool and considering the applicability of being able to visually select different options as standard for new AI Filters, what could possibly be the problem with bringing it back? I have used Phtoshop since v88 and every time I look at a photo that needs "something", I reach for the Variations tool knowing that it will guide me step by step to the adjustments I want to apply. It's been gone for what 15 years? And yet I still do it. And a lot of old timers do the same. I would be willing to bet that new users of Photoshop would use it as much if not more than we did if they just had it available. QUIT adding new useless garbaget to Photoshop and just bring back the most beloved tool Adobe has ever had. I am posting this as a discussion hoping that others will chime in so we can compose a compelling "NEW FEATURE" request or start a petition or something. Perhaps someone knows a dev that would consider how much love Adobe would get for bringing back this most valuable tool. Rather than just sticking this in the "to do" pile that never gets done, I hope to discuss this issue. I know the difference between a feature request, a question, and a discussion. This is supposed to be a discussion, please don't try to tell me that this post is a bug or feature reques. It's clearly allowed under community guidlines. I have fought this war before. The only difference now is that the same logic used to deny users of the most used option in Phtooshop has become standard for all new plugins. Times have changed and we'd like our Variations Tool back please.

Surely you are saying that AFTER reading that I tried every non-raster format possible. I wanted to see if the problem was limited to AI files or if it was across the board. And if the book is going to be published online rather than printed, SVG is pretty much the most effective graphics format and perhaps the only valid vector graphics format that should work. Trying iit out makes a lot of sense if it helps find the bug.

This is not how it has been nor how it is supposed to be. The advantage of vector smart images is that you can resize them WITHOUT having to rasterize and commit to size or resolution. Without a doubt, any Vector Smart Image in photoshop should be resizable. It would be useless without it. This has to not only be a bug, but a big bug. Without being able to resize a vector smart object while in Photoshop, you just as well not use vector smart objects. The shouldn't even call them smart or vector if you can't resize them.

I have meticulously and mathematically created a vector image of the spine perforations for the arc disc system for a book I am working on. The book spine is 8.5 inches and the punched holes (about 10) are distributed vertically along the 8.5 inches. I saved the file as an Illustrator document and placed the document into my InDesign template to represent the spine holes. This is a non-printing element that has to be exactly the right size and the holes need to be perfectly aligned. The artboard, contains not only the holes, but a solid white square background that is exactly .325" wide by 8.5" tall. Importing it into InDesign and the new size is .2667X 7.1241" at 100%. Is this a bug with Illustrator Beta and InDesign Beta or is this the normal behavior kind of like Illustrator and Photoshop (which absolutely refuse to honor the dimensional data between the two programs). Could the fanboys who think this is reasonable explain why this makes more sense than importing a piece of vector artwork at the dimensions it was created so that 100% in InDesign is 100% in Illustrator. Is there any way (plugin/extension) that InDesign can import Illustrator artwork at 100% and have it be the same dimensions? Is there some Adobe-specific formula to that says, 100% in InDesign is really 123% of Illustrator. Also, when I import the file as an SVG it is is different size. As an EPS it is a different size. The only way to get the correct size is to import the file as a jpg. When importing as an Illustrator file, the size ratio is not even right. My original document is .3125" x 8.5" and the closes I can get while maintaing aspect ratios is 3.182 x 8.5. No I don't have a stroke on my white background. No it does not exetend off of my artboard. Yes the artboard is the exact size as the background and the background is positioned at 0,0. This seems like an obvious bug to me, but I am sure there are plenty of people here to chew me out for questioning the developers' logic, so I am asking politely why this happens and what to do to resolve the issue.

I was wondering if there was any way to create a shape in illustrator and then attach a script to that shape in the document. I would like to have a text field inside of my SVG object that updates on resize. So I could create a simple event listener that looked like: function onResizeEvent(e) {

I create a symbol and name it Symbol_0 for example. Then I take that symbol and break the link, expand it, and modify the graphics I select the modified graphics and make it a new symbol entitled Symbol_1 for example. Now when I show my Symbol pallet, the icons appear to be labelled correctly. (image 1) If I drag an instance of Symbol_0 to the artboard and it's actually Symbol_1 (image 2) The advanced toolbar says it's ab ubstabce if Symbol_0 but it's Symbol_1's artwork. If I use the Replace control in the advanced toolbar to swap symbols and select Symbol_0 it remains Symbol_1's artwork If I open the source for Symbol_0, it appears to be the artwork for Symbol_1 but is not a link to Symbol_0 like you'd expect. The same is true in reverse. 1, the Symbol Pallet Icons are not matching the content 2. The placed symbol is not replaceable using the Replace control even if you select the incorrectly labeled artwork This makes the Symbol Pallet useless. I will try with more symbols to see if this behavior extends beyond just the two, but I was hoping someone else had some insight into fixing this problem.

All of the models presented with Character Animator have specific built-in personalities and styles that each represent some other designer's idea of what a character entails. In order to create a generic character, I have to disassemble the existing characters and still find that each of them have their own quirks and implementations. I really just need a generic model that I can add clothes to, modify their bodies to my preference, add or modify facial features. It seems like the very first model that this software should provide is the generic, genderless model with very few features. Does anyone know where I could find such a thing? It's for a personal project, so I don't want to purchase one. Surely some generous soul out there has created a basic model facing forward and sideways that we can use in Character Animator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have read more than 20 different posts about how Illustrator is completely incompetent when importing raster images and I still can't figure out how to compensate. I have a blueprint that I need to trace to scale in Illustrator. I load the blueprint into Photoshop and resize it so that 1"=1mm. Now I need to use this same scale in Illustrator with the Photoshop Image locked behind it to trace it. Every time I cut and paste, it appears as some random height and width. I have read all of the explanations that make some random claim about how Illustrator only see's images as 1/72" or 24% of the original at 300dpi. I just cannot endure another ridiculous explanation of why this is not super easy in Illustrator. If they need to make it a special feature, they should. But knowing how little they care about useful updates, I am willing to compensate if someone can just tell me what to do. Assume that I have a 3000x3000 px document in Illustrator with rendering intent set to 300dpi In Photoshop I have an 800x800 px document (at 300dpi) I need to transform the image in Photoshop so that when I paste it into Illustrator it's dimensions are 800px X 800px. I don't care why and I dont' care how complicated the steps are in Photoshop. I just need to be able to accurately import an 800x800 (300dpi) image that I can rely on the dimensions to trace. Please answer with the simnplest possible explanation because I have read and read and read and nothing seems to work. This should be a simple, simple task and it should be built into Illustrator. Thanks in advance for your explanation--sorry to sound so grumpy but seriously, I just can't imagine what could possibly be the motivation for doing this so wrong.

Thank you to everyone that responded. Unfortunately, I am afraid I wasn't clear in my request. I have inadvertently submitted the same request twice because it seems like such an obvious suggestion but because there are 2100 requests, nobody actually reads numbers 300=2100 unless they are OCD or something. I would like to discuss a fundamental change to Illustrator and provide a link to the feature request to encourage people to upvote it because it would make like so much easier for everyone. But right now, it's not getting any exposure so there's no real measurement of interest in it. That's a UserVoice problem but it's affecting the efficacy of submitting feature requests.
