Please see my earlier replies. Changing leading by a small amount, from (I think) (15.5) to 15, made the half-height line go away. i followed that by a small change in the position of the subscript, in Preferences | type | advanced character type

Perfect, Mike and all. I changed 'Leading' from (15.2) to 15, and that got rid of the extra half-height line just like you said it would. Then, under Preferences | Type| Subscript, I was able to change position from 33.3% to 15%, and now, AOK. Thanks to all of you for most useful help in this.

Thanks, Bill. Partial answer now, more later. When I pasted from Pages, all subscripts rendered as plain characters. I then made them subscripts, when the aforesaid problem occurred. But let me work with your other suggestions, and hope that a solution will emerge. jwc

I tried to upload a jpg (forbidden). Tried psd . . . also forbidden! But no, I really meant it: adding a subscript results in a half-hight line _above_ the line containing the subscript. Will try again later, with alternate image types, or any suggestions?

Another option may be to adjust (if possible) the amount of the drop-down of the subscripts. I just noticed that Pages does not drop them as far, and that they have no effect on line spacing.

My inDesign document includes chemical symbols and compounds, that require subscripts. Every line of text containing subscripts has extra space _sbove_ the line. This makes the inDesign manuscript look strange. If there is any way to avoid that extra half-height line, I would appreciate a pointer. I originated the document using Pages (Apple app), where subscripts are rendered just fine. However, my printer could not work with the exported PDF because embedded fonts were not present. If anyone can show me how to embed fonts in an existing PDF generated from a Pages document, that would be even more helpful.

My TOC page numbers snow up right after chapter titles, whereas I would like them to be justified at the end of the line for each of the respective entries. Would one of you pleas show me where that control is located. Best, jwc

My imported text starts out with an unqualified paragraph style, then suddenly acquires the '+' sign. I cannot find the cause of that. Pleae advise if there is a'reset' method to remove the '+' sign.

I need to create a new inDesign document by copying/pasting from an Apple ‘Pages’ document. I’m having a degree of difficulty getting the text threading automated. Have created text boxes on each of the relevant page masters, but do not find the threading workflow from there. On facing pairs of masters, the left hand page has a flow icon. When I hover over it, the indication is that ‘this story is the master’s primary text flow; click to disable’ The main text in my document starts out near the bottom of an odd numbered page. I pasted in text from the source document, more than the text box could hold, and expected the text to flow to the next page, but it did not; the text box showed, instead, a red ‘+’ for overset text. If one of you could please show me how to enable automatic text threading for my inDesign document, I would be grateful. I read the online help on this topic, but I'm still not clear in my case. Well,that is interesting indeed. First off, I do all my testing on desktop system, bu clearly need to capture the OSX community of users. Two questions: 1 - How ‘mobile’ is a tablet? 2 - Could you point me to a script that I can embed in the home page header, which detects the size of device being used by the site visitor, so that I can program the links accordingly?

I forgot: When sending the site visitor to an off-site link via"<a href- . . .", etc., is it best to add the qualifier "target=_new", to be sure the user returns to the page she started from? My intuition says "Yes, use it" (otherwise you depend on visitor's remembering to use the 'back' arrow on browser), but I would like a confirmation from one of you. I just created the ePub reflowable version. It is not well formatted essentially unreadable. Figure numbers do not progress from 1, 2, 3, etc. They are all numbered '1', etc. Text reflows with browser window.

I am about to publish two books, one using Apple Pages (seems easier at this point), and the other using Adobe inDesign. In the latter, I'm not seeing a pure 'pdf' option, as I am pretty sure I have seen in the past. Should I, perhaps, use 'Interactive PDF'? Will that work for my printer? In the meantime I'm seeing a 'reflowable ePub' option, which looks very interesting for viewing the document online. Can I output to interactive pdf for my printer? Will that work OK? Best, jwc

Cannot find the update button in Type | Hyperlinks and Cross-References. The 'Update Cross References' option is disabled. There is a 'Cross Reference Options' panel, but that does contain the 'Update' button to which you referred above. Tks, jwc
