There isn't a vertical text tool in the English language version of InDesign. That tool only exists in foreign language versions of the program like Japanese in which vertical is the natural alignment. There is a workaround using Type on a Path. The video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-5ecVpewAE shows all of the necessary steps to align the text vertically using the Stair Step option provided in the Type on a Path Options dialog box. It will also show you how to space out the text and provides a neat trick to make the last character align correctly. If you look at the imported image in Outline mode (View>Outline) do you see the outlines of the image? If not then the image is still raster and the bounding box should be there. If you do see the image in Outline mode and you also see the bounding box then try selecting that with the Direct Selection tool (white arrow) and see if you can delete it. ... View more

It can then be applied by simply selecting an object and making its fill or stroke the desired color by clicking on that color in the Swatch Panel. I assume that you are referring to the pixelization of the image. Pixelization happens to an image if it is enlarged too much from its original size especially if its resolution is low to begin with. If the pixelization is only appearing when you are lowering the opacity then try turning off GPU Performance in your InDesign preferences.
