It's an issue with premiere as well and restarting often fixes it. Often just toggling between applications can fix it. Have been advised to check audio output is the same as default system. Also try closing waveforms in the timeline. This neeeeeds fixing , as we nee dto be able to choose our audio hardware independantly of wider system. try changing audio settings. PLease can someone give me troubleshooting tips for this! it is so so so BAD windows 10 latest, AFX 2020 17.0.5 - TWO Nvidia 1070Ti - latest Studio Driver. Corsair Strafe Silent Cherry MX - latest iCue software Having same issue. It is terrible.  Tried turning off hardware acceleration Turned off decklink/mercury, let's call it porridge not mercury, or maybe tar. tried reinstalling gpu, decklink and keyboard drivers Was fine before today's update. Think it is possibly to do with Audio Waveforms rendered out 48hz aiff, but no that didn't fix it. Can I recommend somebody finds a copy of Puffin Commotion and copies its supercache methodology. Put the ram Preview into the disk cache and leave it there. Stop limiting RAM preview to available RAM. Empty the RAM if the cache is fast enough. MAke the empty cache buttons ACTUALLY EMPTY THE CACHE. Have you updated the proclivity settings? I think you will be getting significantly faster read times on the RAID 0 because the latency goes down. Even modern nvme drives do not match the 19 μs latency of the IOFX and I had 4 in a RAID which is the only scratch drive I have had that consistently plays dpx without caching. I thought the real time playback was just part of the updates in AE until I tried just using two iofx, or usiing one Corsair mp510. Microseconds, and 5 parallel writes really help. NOt sure how many parallel writes you get with two 960 Pro.  I am now deciding between 2 x iofx and 2x 10870Ti or one GPU and 4 IOFX as the render times reduce with the write speeds. NOticeably. While troubleshooting though I noticed that some new exports still include old fields in the json export, despite them not being anywhere in the AE file. PS. I have been forcing AE use with Paint as suggested, as I figured you might fix the Cinema4d render thing at some point. If there is no 3d in the comp then at some point I am sure you will tell Premiere to ignore the 3d renderer! STicking with paint seems to work. HI I am a pro and I need a lightweight player! I need a way to click a file and scrub through it. Which in modern cpu, disk and gpu device world should not be hard. Scratch Play was it but it got bloated and paid for Really Adobe should have one. Really Windows should have one. There is a lot of different professional player software for many different purposes and a full blown video editor is not the most efficient way of playing back a file. Sometimes it is just plain QC software, with io device support or scopes or VU meters. Sometimes it is VJ optimised, sync optimised. gpu optimised etc. Quicktime was fine on a mac, but always dumb on a PC. Slow and misinterpreting. ... View more

Also JKL would be a plus! You used to be able to just drag a clip onto a FCP icon and it would play. Premiere on windows seems to make me import footage first. I know this is the AE forum, but is ther eanything that can open a file direct? At home with a 4 x ioFX raid I can play everything in real time in AE but that doesn't work everywhere... Got the Black Edition working but it doesn't scrub so might as well stick to VLC Guess it is hard to get frame accurate scrubbing outside of Premiere on windows, yet quicktime was fine with it on a mac. Any more tips would be appreciated. I was using Media through a Transcoders aardvark payer but again a bit clunky to get things in and out, though highly recommend Wayne Norton's work. Great Does it scrub smoothly This is the main thing I have not found in Mac PC switching. Seer previews miost things but is sketchy. I know Fusion used to have one. Scratch Play seemed great until they decided to charge for it. Prelude might work if you didn't need a bit of set up each time and pretend to be ingesting. Otherwise it decklinks as well. Seems the decklink ones are like £1000 but hopefully someone will find a way. I'll just get into the habit of using Premiere and see if it slows things down much. I think the next year or so will be expression chaos as we transition to full javascript and it gets debugged. I still think it is an SSD cache problem, or RAM, or VRAM all not refreshing properly, maybe to do with proclivity, if that is still accessible. Many broadcasters won't accept templates with Expressions in, which makes MOGRT in particular an unviable delivery option. Hopefully some sort of under the hood soltion will be found. Lucky you. I am in High Sierra and the update killed audio, glitchy on and off during RAM preview. Have tried different buffer settings to no avail. double check there are no expressions effecting the layer or referencing the layer? if so disable, then delete name, then re-enable/ I just thought I had found the problem as well until I realised the text was being set by expression... ... View more

Apologies gf Thanks, it will be great to see what the problem actually is so we can all avoid it, if anyone else ever gets it! I have whined a lot on here over the years and it has nearly always been my own fault in the end. But I know how frustrating it is when everyone treats you like an idiot so sorry about that. Also worth checking cache isn't corrupt, which happens all the time, so what you are looking at isn't actually the current state of the comp. I think there are issues somewhere, maybe with RAM / proclivity handover or something not updating the cache. If it After Effects text, then deleting the name will always mean the layer name is now linked to the text content, unless you have an expression or animator on the text source, (318 sounds like an index number to me). So why would the Source Name be this weird number? It could  have something to do with the god awful incremental renaming that after effects does to numbers, and AE is adding a number to your name just to annoy the crap out of you. Or maybe you have hidden text in the layer. Is it point or area text? Is there any way you could have text off screen? Double click the layer name to select all type and delete to check? It does normally work, as I have been doing it since this thread showed me why naming the layer breaks the link, and how deleting the name relinks it. It is one of those things you won't know until someone tells you, (like select order equals paste or sequence layer order) Once you have done that changing the text should change the Layer name. Changing the layer name won't ever change the text content, without an expression. Editing the text it is usually best to doubleclick the layer name to highlight then type in the comp window. Does it work if you do this? Can you link the type to a spreadsheet instead? Can you link the type to Comp Name or Layer name with an expression? I don't import Photoshop text , (or even knew you could) so do not know about that, and there are a lot of font issues for the last few versions. TTF vs OTF problems galore.  In the present version, I have to use OTF in after effects, but TTF in Illustrator for the same font. They can't both use the same version. So when they fixed last year's TTF problems, they reintroduced some other problems. Just saying this in case you can get different versions of the font to check.
