No, just no! While I don't use it a lot anymore, in5 is an absolutely brilliant product with great developer support. The last time I can remember Adobe buying a plugin/addin for InDesign was the Table/Cell style from Teacup Software around 2004. It was great at the time, but it hasn't received any improvements since. And then there's the whole host of 1.0 features that never saw a 2.0 such as all of the animation tools that are stuck in the past and are just one giant kludge. Let's just leave this one to Ajar and let them keep supporting it.

Best advice I can give you is to give this up. You'll never get an acceptable result with multimedia in a PDF. This is especially true using a 13 year old version of InDesign which will probably let you do a bunch of things that aren't even supported anymore.

Only the current and previous versions are available. That means 2024 and 2025 now. If you had come here before uninstalling 2023 someone might have been able to help. But that's water under the bridge. I'm sorry, but you'll need a new computer if you can't upgrade past Catalina.

8GB of RAM is insufficient for much of anything these days short of checking email and doing basic office tasks. Recommended minimum for InDesign is 16GB.

You've already found the only solution. In fact, you're lucky they gave you an 18.0 installer so if I were you, I'd have a long talk with the customers about this because the longer it goes on, the harder it's going to be.

EPUB or PDF? Which is it? For PDF I would never even think to use buttons anymore. They're simply unreliable and the more you add the worse it gets. My advice: rethink your project.

You just never noticed it. Try saving an AI file without the default PDF portion. Then try placing that. Edit: I see from the original post you already found out.

Could be a permissions issue, but a lot of Mac users are reporting issues with Magnet. I'm not sure if this is one of them, but if you have if you have it installed, uninstall it.
