If you want to apply the tracking data to an effect you should select it when you choose the target instead of having the target chosen for you automatically. the reason it's there automatically is because that's the only choice if you only have one layer, so what are the other option? if not choosing anything and choosing one is the only option, having ability to not choose one is the same like not choosing anything. you should simply not apply target because you don't intend to use the tracking data anyway. What if you have two effects that have Point controls? Now you have to either put the one you want at the top or add them later. you can select each one you want no matter the stacking order. Here's what I mean, One track applied to multiple layers and effects. You can't do the track if either of the effects has been applied to the layer before tracking. You would have to delete them or add the Null I don't see this behavior here. if I have multiple effects on a footage layer I can at any time chose either the effects or a null and one does not affect the other so really the only gotcha I get from this conversation is the case where you have effect applied to the footage layer and it's the only one there in the timeline, then you do the track, then you add another layer in the timeline, and the issue may be is that the default target is the effect and you need to move one inch to select the other layer instead of the effect. for this to change this means that when you add a layer to an only one layer timeline, the first one will be the default instead of the effect once you add it. I set my wide gamut monitor to sRGB, and was able to get consistent results. since then I replaced my monitor and got another wide gamut monitor - Eizo, and set it's profile to sRGB since I only do video and not print work. everything is o.k. your laptop by looking and its specs is not wide gamut but sRGB. so this is not your issue and maybe what you are experiencing is the fact that it's not calibrated properly. ... I do most of my motion tracking before I add another layer me too it throws in an extra step. You ought to at least be able to disable the tracking if you have an effect applied to a layer how do you mean "disable the tracking"? if you don't apply to anything then it's not doing anything. if you do hit edit target, the only reason it's enabled is that it has effect with position coordinates applied to the layer (which is kinda rare for tracking a video anyway). if you do have another layer in the layer stack (before the tracking), it will default to the 1st layer, if you don't, it will default to the effect in the layer itself because that's the only option. that seems intuitive to me. in the case where you have the another layer in the layer stack, and effect applied to the tracked layer - the default would be the other layer in the case where you don't have the another layer in the layer stack, and effect applied to the tracked layer - it defaults to the effect in the layer and not another layer in the layer stack - in this case I would support the default would be the other layer, and not the effect. but that's my personal preference, I am not sure how many users prefer that. it's only one click to choose from. it's actually the first time I have seen a user in the forums get in trouble for having effect being the default but in all fairness - there is no other layer in the layer stack anyway ... At the very least you should be able to deselect the Effect even if you don't have another layer in the comp to act as a target. not sure about that. if you don't have any layer to act as target, then edit target will be grayed out from the start. since you have an effect, then edit target is available and you do have an option for applying transform data only to the effect. since that's the only option anyway, what's the use of deselecting it? ... I did not convert it to a shape (?) I imported the illustrator file. If it is an unnecessary step then how should I start it? In the screenshot we see a shape, not an illustrator layer, so I assumed you converted the illustrator layer to a shape. I have created an icon that is a group of paths which I have imported from illustrator (see attached image of "0" with "/" going through center). Once I have imported into After Effects it becomes of layer with a group of paths, fills and other sub-layers (see attached layer screenshot). first off, why did you convert it to shape? unless you plan to use shape operators or manipulate the path of the shape itself or need it to be embedded in the project with no source files - it's an unnecessary step. My ultimate goal is to animate this layer along a path. I have tried merging, however, it does not allow me to animate along a separate desired path line. if you want to animate a layer along the path, create a new shape layer, draw a path, then copy paste the path property to the target layer's position. this will convert the path to position keyframes. this is option 1. option 2, can create a dynamic path. add a shape layer and create a path, then highlight the path property, then use the window->create nulls from paths, and click trace path. this will create a null that will move along the path, and defaults to loop (you can change it in the effect controls). now parent anything to that null and it will move along with it. ... Change them to 3840 x 2160 and then you can use Match Settings on export. since the preview setting is set to i-frame MPEG only, you normally don't want to use match settings. you will get a format which is useless for export and the resolution will max at 1920x1080 in each dimensions I would advise OP to only "match sequence settings" when the sequence format and resolution are the same as your export settings you wish to export. or don't use that setting and simply change the format in the export settings to the one you want. ... for quickly color matching different elements in a scene, I would try using the color matcher effect in after effects (same effect exists in Premiere but I wouldn't composite images in premiere if I can help it) which can do a decent job sometimes and somewhat similar to color match in photoshop although not that accurate in comparison from my testing. there's a strength slider and color offset parameter that can give you some control, you can further enhance it using other color correction tools like levels or curves. for more accurate way which is a longer route, I would use the manual way which is matching each RGB channel by either curves or levels, here's a tutorial to demonstrate this method. you can use the regular levels effect or curves effect, and I would also adjust the mid-tones(gamma), not just dark and bright points. ... a 3d animated video i have made if you made the animation yourself, then you have access to the coordinates of these elements and can export this information to After Effects in various ways (depends on the app). another option is to leave some sort of texture on the sign, even render just the sign, so the software have enough to track and use planar tracking app like Mocha Ae that comes with after effects to track the sign. and you can always apply the numbers as an animation right in the 3d app as a texture to the surface of the sign. render separately and composite in after effects. ...
