Usually that happens when the file extension is incorrect or missing. Example: install_flash_player.ex or install_flash_player (with no extension) and it will look different than the Flash installer. I'm missing the point. This is a user-to-user forum. I'm pretty sure no one from ABC is participating here, and we can't do anything about the software choices at abc.com. I'm pretty sure Adobe and Google can't either. I agree that the change they made isn't working as well as what they had been using (I watch news videos on ABC and they have gotten choppy lately) from a user standpoint, but they probably were looking at bandwidth reduction first and quality second. MySpace players don't always keep up to date as quickly as YouTube and other commercial video sites do. Since YouTube has advertiser support, financially, they're better able to do this. MySpace and a lot of the plug-in makers don't have that kind of backing and they have a slower pace to get current with software. Odds are that the pages you are having trouble with are using an outdated plug-in that no longer works with Flash Player's latest build. Here's my most recent exerience with WebRoot. A neighbor brought her son's laptop to me three weeks ago. It was running slow (I mean SSSSSSSLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWW) and there were some hardware problems. The trackpad wouldn't allow a left click, and some keys were no longer working on the keyboard. It had Webroot installed. I ran through a scan with WR and it gave the PC a 100% clean bill of health. Then the trackpad and keyboard stopped working altogether so I had to connnect a mouse and USB keyboard just to continue working. When those started giving me trouble I decided to repair the XP install. After an "all nighter" repairing the OS and cleaning things up, I uninstalled WebRoot and put AVG free on the laptop. During the initial scan AVG found two instances of Conficker. It quarantined them and I deleted them. On a reboot the speed picked up by about 300% and suddenly all the hardware came back to life. I'd stay away from WebRoot if I were you, but then this was just my personal terrible experience with it. Same goes for SpySweeper. I've read in some pretty reputable places that it puts more spyware on your system than it'll ever take off. Uninstall those two and get AVG free. It's far less intrusive, better protection and it doesn't cost a thing. Once that's done, go to http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/ and get Firefox. Use it instead of IE. You'll find it to be better, safer and faster. After that, go to the Flash Player download page and you should have no problems. ... View more

They download videos in a FLV format with whatever resolution they are on the site, which is, to keep from taxing bandwidth, low res, and small size. 460 x 320 usually at the most. Blowing those up to the size of a TV screen blurs them terribly. By example: A standard def DVD is 4.3 gigs An HD DVD is around 7.6 gigs A "ripped" DVD (AVI) as anywhere from 700Mb to over a gig and a quarter. A high quality MPEG is about 100MB per minute. The average FLV downloaded through a YouTube downloader is about 4Mb. 1 Mb per minute vs 100. The compression that goes into making a video suitable for a site that has billions of views of millions of videos hourly, degrades the qualtiy tremendously to accomodate streaming bandwidth. Obviously it's not a Flash content problem since it works perfectly well in other browsers in Windows. It's a problem with either the code in the Flash content, or in Firefox. Again, no one here can do anything about either of those. Like I said though, unless you're testing six year old Flash content, you'll likely get between 80 and 90% errors and nothing more with that version. You make a good point about some people having the older version still installed... BUT... If they haven't been prompted automatically to update, it's because they haven't got an internet connection at all, and they haven't seen a flash video or animation since 2004 at the very latest (and in some cases are still running Windows 98, 95 or 2). I have four systems running XP (SP3) and they ALL run Flash Player 10. 6.0.88.0 was the standard when it was released. It isn't now. My daughter just got a EeePC netbook with XP home (SP3) last summer and it came with Flash Player 9 which I upgraded to 10 shortly afterward. Unless you are building "out-of-the-box" retro systems with XP (no SP) and all of the ORIGINAL software, there's not much sense in trying to go back to nearly eight year old software for todays Flash web content. Even for testing, you'll get more errors out of AS3 and AS2 Flash files than you'll get playable SWFs. It's like using Acrobat 3 to open 2010 PDFs. An execrise in futility to say the least. I have Safari, Firefox, Camino, Chrome, Netscape, Opera, iCab, OmniWeb and SeaMonkey all working with the latest update to the Flash Player. IE 5.2.3 for Mac was discontinued five years ago and under no circumstances (other than to see how badly things look with it) should you be using it. I have Firebird as well (the predecessor to Firefox) and it works about like IE, but I keep it for nostalgic reasons. I never use it for anything but testing though because it just doesn't function with the latest plug-ins and add-ons.
