Tony, have you tried going back to Reader 8? Since this appears to be a problem with the bank site and their PDF generation software, Reader 8 should allow you to still access your statements until they get caught up, and then you can upgrade to 9 again.

1. Right click the PDF. 2. Choose Properties. 3. Next to Open with, click Change. 4. Select Adobe Reader from the list. 5. Click OK. 6. If it can be checked, click Always use this application to open file of this type. 7. Click Apply and OK. PDFs should now open with Adobe Reader.

To install 8, you need to uninstall 9, run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (msicuu2.exe - google it) and remove all Reader install files, then go to oldversion.com and download the 8 installer. Install it, and you can return to viewing PDFs in Reader 8.

Let's try a "clean install": 1. Uninstall Reader (using the Control Panel). 2. Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (msicuu2.exe) 3. Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the installer for Reader 9 (and any previous versions if they are still installed). 4. Download and install a new copy of Reader, and update it (if required) to 9.3.1.

The "animation" is not a looping animation. The Shockwave logo, buttons and text all appear as part of the animation and then stay where they are. Your screen shot shows this. I checked mine at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ As you mouse over the buttons, they should change to show more info about each. If the Shockwave install was unsuccessful, it wouldn't even get this far, so I tend to think it did work.

There is a free PDF reader called FoxIt. Try downloading it and see if the PDF in question still appears blank in FoxIt. If it does, it's an issue with either the browser or the website and the file being downloaded. If not, we'll look at what can be done with Reader 9.

K-lite is a codec pack put together by a third party for things like H264 MPEG, some AVI and a few other obscure types of video, so that Windows can play them properly. I use it and it has never hampered Flash or Shockwave.

Another step that wasn't mentioned to me the first time through was that it's not only just a matter of choosing another program, the user clicked Browse and navigated to Microsoft Office and then chose Word as the default program, setting it as the default for all files of that type (PDF). Then after a reboot, did the same thing only navigating to Adobe Reader the second time, and checking to use it as the default. Only then did the icons change.

Right click any PDF. Choose Properties. Next to Open With, click change and choose ANY program other than Adobe Reader. Click OK, then click Apply, and OK. Reboot. Right click any PDF. Choose Properties. Next to Open With, choose Adobe Reader. The icons will change back to Adobe Reader icons.

From what I've read of SOL files, I don't understand what you would be saving them for. They are "session specific" according to three sources I read, and are replaced upon starting a new browser session. If you really need to have them, why not cut and paste them into a separate folder? SOL files are a lot like "cookies". They won't have any affect on anything you do in Flash player on your system, only when you visit the site from which they were created. According to what I read, anyway.

My Toshiba laptop does this all the time (Vista 32 bit Home Premium, but it did it with Home Basic too) with all kinds of applications. I can prevent it by running the display settings in 16 bit mode instead of 32 bit, but then I have troubles with iTunes and WinDVD. I run updates every day, and I have the latest drivers for the Nvidia grahics. Go figure.

You don't need a third party player. If you build Flash content on Flash Pro, Or something like SoThink SWF, or if you convert a video to FLV, then all you have to do is embed the content. The plugin (Flash Player) will do the rest in the browser.

But that's why I suggested it. There are TWO plugins. One for other browsers... which you said is working. The other... IE... which isn't wroking... should be downloaded and installed... or reinstalled. Before you do that though, run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the installer files. THEN reinstall the player for IE.

If you go to the "manual downloads page" http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ there are two installers for XP/Vista/7etc. Choose the one for Internet Explorer, run it, and see if that helps.

I'm pretty sure the solution you're looking for is here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404082.html If that isn't correct, then you need to dump all of the Adobe Reader and Acrobat folders from HD\Library\Application Support\Adobe HD\Library\Preferences Home\Library\Preferences Also dump: com.adobe.acrobat.pdfviewer.plist, com.adobe.PDFAdminSettings.plist, com.adobe.Reader_x86_9.0.plist, com.adobe.Reader.plist, and com.adobe.acrobat.90.sh.plist wherever you find them in the HD\Library\Preferences or User\Library\Preferences folders. Once you've done that, empty the trash, and install Reader 9.3.1.

I feel your pain. I have Ubuntu 10 64 Bit and I'm still learning it. Like when I started using Mac eight years ago, people told me, "It's your choice to use that OS, knowing its limitations as far as software goes." It's gotten easier with OS X over the years, but Linux is still largely a "user choice", along with the limited availability of software. I hope that as I learn my way around in it, more stuff becomes available, because I like Linux (SuSE especially) a lot more than Windoze, and almost as much as OS X. The Ubuntu community has been really good about developing the stuff major software manufacturers don't, can't or just plain won't though.

If you have the Flash Player plugin installed, it'll be here: That's HD\Library\Application Support\Adobe\Flash Player\Flash Player.plugin If that file is intact, we need to start looking at other things like the Shockwave files.

I'd add to that "never ever ever" download anything (other than pictures, and even those can contain harmful WMFs) from Facebook unless you are absolutely, 100% sure of who put it there and where it came from. On my Mac I have a folder full of attached and downloaded Windows viruses. Nearly half of them started out named "installflashplayer.exe". Every one is a trojan. Unfortunately Adobe can't "babysit" all the jerks who like to put these things up all over the Internet. But people can be a lot more discerning as to what they allow to download, and where the get it.

The player (free) is a plug-in for browsers. You don't embed the player itself. You embed Flash content which is created using Flash Professional, third party software (like SoThink SWF creator) or a video converter to take WMVs or MPGs and turn them into SWFs. Once you've created the Flash content, it's embedded into the page (site) and the plug-in plays it in the browser.
