I don't think sticking with Flash will be a hinderance. I totally understand wanting to stick with a workflow that you know. But you might want to try a project in Flash Builder (just give yourself some extra time to figure out the new workflow). To answer the question about libraries, Flash can be kept as current as Flash Builder (instructions on how to overlay the AIR 2.7 SDK) & (http://swfhead.com/blog/?p=1378). Flash Builder supports pure AS3 projects, so you would be fine making the transition. You will gain a lot in terms of a much better IDE for coding. The fact that the code editor in Flash Pro is so poor is one reason there are several alternative code editors (FDT, FlashDevelop, IntelliJ, etc). Here is my understanding of the updating rules for iOS apps. Once you publish an app targeting a specific OS, any further update to that app must target that OS. Since Flash CS5.5 only targets 2.6 and later, which has a dependency on iOS 4 or later, you are as you discovered stuck. Device Central does not support running apks. If you do not have access to an Android device that is capable of running AIR for Android, the you will have to download the Android SDK and install the Android emulator. Once that is installed, you will need to install the emulator version of AIR for Android, then you will be able to install your APK. If this sounds like a lot of work, it can be. The emulator is also slow and does not support all the features of the device. I always recommend that if you are developing for Android to get a device. Publishing is so easy with the new tooling in CS5.5, and having it running in the real environment is so worth the cost. You will wind up saving money, but not waiting for the emulator. Chris ... Which iOS device are you referring to? iPhone 4? or an iPhone 3GS? One has a 'retina' display and the other does not. I don't work for Adobe, so I don't know their reasons. This is just what they have public communicated about the AIR for mobile solution. I think some of the choices about AIR were about time to market, and the number of users. Heck, there are people upset that it doesn't support ActionScript 2. Actually, Adobe seems quite committed to the web standard solution tools as well. They are hiring jQuery experts and are committing improvements back into the jQuery framework. I expect to see some real mobile based enhancements in Dreamweaver to support developers who want to build mobile web apps. To that end I think PhoneGap and jQuery are going to be your best friends for your development tool chest. I don't think there are any plans to support the HTML/JS development model with the AIR for mobile efforts. I would instead take a look at solutions using PhoneGap or Appcelerator's Titanium for your mobile development if you want to stay in the HTML/JS world. It is my understanding that Javascript based AIR applications can not be created for AIR for Android. Now you can create a StageWebView within you application. When you run your APK on a supported device and AIR for Android is NOT installed, the user will be prompted to install it. Much like the desktop experience. There is nothing that you need (or can) to do to enable this. Just build your APK and let the 'magic' happen.
