I have seen this twice on my Surface Laptop, one a few months ago and again recently. In my case, the solution was to go to Windows Device Manager and delete the video driver under Display Adaptor, then reboot to force Windows to re-install the driver. Lightroom Desktop then worked normally. Maybe this will work for you - it's worth a go.

I welcome the new facility in Lightroom Desktop to edit images in third party apps, but ran into a problem the first time I tried to use it on my Windows 11 Pro PC which has Affinity Photo installed. Pointing LR to affinityphoto2.exe produced a "Cannot access this file" error. My understanding is that some apps are now sandboxed when installed in Win11, and AffinityPhoto is one of these. Lightroom is not the only application to have run into problems as a result. I have found this conversation https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/171826-why-are-we-using-msix-for-windows-installers/#comment-1009385 on the Affinity Photo forum, which offers a utility called aflaunch.exe to resolve the problem. I am aware of the risks of running utilities from "unofficial" sources but I tried it, and it works for Lightroom Desktop to open images in Affinity Photo. Try it at your own risk, though, I can't vouch for the utility. My problem is solved, then, but I thought I would pass this on for what it is worth. Maybe Adobe could look at the issue and check with Serif that my approach is the correct one.

I have an HDR600 monitor and I can edit images in HDR (I use Lightroom Desktop), but whites are clipped above about 1.5 stops. I assume an HDR1000 monitor would go somewhat higher than that before clipping. I wasn't aware that there was an Adobe requirement for HDR1000 but I could well understand it being a recommendation because, in my case anyway, HDR600 is obviously limiting the potential of HDR. In short, my experience is that HDR600 works, but in a limited way. If I were buying a new monitor now for use with Lightroom I would probably be looking for HDR1000, but I don't suppose they come cheap. My existing monitor works well enough for me to explore HDR editing, but at the moment the benefits of HDR are not enough to persuade me to replace it with a HDR1000 device. When HDR gains wider acceptance I may think again - perhaps by then higher-performance monitors will have come down in price. Meanwhile, although I occasionally experiment with HDR edits, most of my work is in SDR.

Having written all that, I took a deep breath and forcibly deleted the video driver on the laptop, rebooted and did a hardware scan. Bingo - thumbnails are back.

Today I started Lightroom Desktop to find the thumbnails in Grid view (both square and photo) are plain black. In both cases the thumbnails appear for a fraction of a second as I enter Grid view before going black. Filmstrip view has the same problem. Detail view works as normal. This is only happening on my laptop - my main desktop PC is OK, so I'm guessing it is a video driver issue. Before I go down that rabbit hole I wanted to check here whether anyone else has experienced a similar problem, or has any other suggestions. I realise the laptop isn't ideal spec for LR but it is useful for quick edits when away from my desktop, and has worked OK for many months before this cropped up. - Surface Laptop 5 (i7 / 16GB / Intel Iris XE Graphics), Win 11 Pro patched up to date. - LR Desktop 7.4.1 - Performance preferences are normally left on Auto, but I have tried setting "Use graphics processor" to Off, and also tried setting it to "Custom / Use graphics processor for image processing", restarting LR each time. Graphics Performance is also usually set to Auto but I have tried high performance and power saving settings. - I have tried adjusting the thumbnail size to various settings - the black boxes get bigger or smaller, but no thumbnail appears - I have checked the video driver is up to date in Windows Update. Any ideas or accounts of a similar experience would be helpful.

While editing images I often use the mouse wheel to scroll between edit panels. This has become more important with the advent of HDR - the "Light" panel is now quite long if you are using Curve and SDR settings. The problem is that, if the mouse pointer is just slightly outside the edit panels and you don't notice, moving the wheel takes you to another image. This is infuriating when you are focussed on what you are doing - it breaks the flow.
I would much prefer it if operating the mouse wheel while editing did not navigate to another image. The cursor keys provide this functionality anyway, and they reliably move one image at a time - moving the mousewheel may move any number of images depending on how far you move it, so you end up on a random image. I don't think using the wheel to navigate between photos while editing adds useful functionality, but for me it has a big downside.
If there is evidence that people often move between images with the mouse wheel while editing, then maybe make switching that functionality off an option; otherwise I would say just disable it.

I know this is really, really trivial, but it irritates me!
Lightroom Desktop 7.2, Windows 11 23H2
Go to the Crop panel, make an adjustment under Geometry, then right-click on the Geometry heading to reset your adjustment.
The pop-up says "Reset Rotate Flip".
I would expect to see "Reset Geometry". Clicking on "Reset Rotate Flip" does reset the Geometry adjustment so everything actually works OK, it's just irritating (and maybe confusing for new users). Rotate & Flip is the panel above, and it doesn't have a reset facility. Maybe it should have.

Lightroom Desktop is intended to work with your imported images stored on Adobe's servers, but can optionally keep a copy on your disk. Have a look in your cache preferences in Lightroom (Edit / Preferences - Cache tab) and see whether "Store a copy of all originals" is selected - if it is, unselect it, then clear the cache. See if that resolves your duplicate storage problem. If you want to work on locally-stored images without syncing them to Adobe's server, choose "Local" instead of "Cloud" in the left-hand pane - you will then be working on the original image and not copying it locally, nor syncing it to Adobe. If this is how you prefer to work, then you would probably be happier with Lightroom Classic.

I see the Pixel 8 / 8 Pro is now listed on the UK as having "preliminary support" in 16.01, so someone has taken notice. 16.01 doesn't appear to be available yet, though. I guess what we can take from this is that Pixel 8 support is probably on the way.

I'm thinking of buying a Google Pixel 8 phone, but Adobe camera raw support is a must-have for me. I'm seeing all over the Internet that the Pixel 8 / Pixel 8 Pro are now supported, but if I go to the UK supported cameras listing they are not included. Go to the US site, and they are there. Is this a minor problem with Adobe's site, or am I likely to run into an issue if I buy a Pixel 8 because I live in the UK? I have spent a bit of time on this today, doing as you requested but repeating the process to see if I could spot a pattern. The error occurred on two out of four images, but not on the first edit - subsequent edits were affected. I will DM you with a link to several logs and a more detailed narrative, which I hope will be helpful. I did think I had established a pattern at one point, but unfortunately it didn't stand up to testing. I think it is one of those dreaded intermittent faults. Elsewhere in this thread Jim Wilde has kindly suggested a workaround where making a minor edit on the "originating" computer can cause a sync to the "receiving" computer to complete properly, which is great, except when you don't have access to the originating PC when the problem occurs - that is what caused me to blow a fuse the other day. Today it occured to me to try the same thing on an Android phone. I found I was able to edit both of today's "stuck" images on my phone, and that did indeed cause the sync to complete. I wonder whether an edit via the Web app might also work - I will try it if it happens again - but in any case it is another option to try if a sync error occurs when the source PC is not available.

A quick update on this - it's still happening, Adobe still haven't acknowleged it and I'm still having to confine myself to working on one PC, on a cloud-based system whose USP is that you can use whatever device you like. Yesterday I foolishly made a minor adjustment to an image on my laptop. This morning, I have wasted another hour or so because those changes did not sync properly and on my PC that image was reset. Adobe, if you are reading this - please, please at least acknowledge this issue, and tell us you are fixing it!

I'm sure you are right, my irritation at wasting yet more of my time with the problem this morning was showing. In my defence, had Adobe responded with "Known problem, we're working on it", I wouldn't have put myself in a position to get bitten by the bug again. I'll stick to one PC for editing now.

Thanks - I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I take your point about syncing going via the cloud, my reason for having the two devices side-by-side was to confirm that some data syncs promptly (e.g. ratings) and some doesn't (e.g. image edits). I have also tried this exercise with a browser window open on Lightroom Online, and I see the same issues. Thanks too for the link to the other thread, which I had not seen. It seems that the problem lies with Adobe and not with us. If Adobe acknowledged the issue here and offered an update it would be helpful. I have managed to get the image I edited yesterday to sync by making a change online, which synced to my desktop PC - but my laptop then displayed "Waiting . . .". Finally, making a further edit on my desktop PC got it to sync to the laptop. I don't think this is how the cloud is supposed to work.

I would be really interested to know whether anyone connected with Adobe has any comment on this problem. It has just happened again. Foolishly, last night I made some changes to an image on my laptop. I made quite sure everything was synced before closing Lightroom. I checked the image in the online version of Lightroom - the new edits were there. This morning I opened Lightroom on my Desktop and went to have a look at that image, and there it is - "Waiting for settings . . .". I can't do anything with it (the "Reset" option doesn't do anything). I can see the image in the online version of Lightroom, complete with the edits I made last night, but I cannot see it on my PC. What is going wrong here? I have been using LR Desktop for years - this issue has only cropped up in the past couple of months,

For some weeks I have been suffering a repeated problems between two Win11 PCs (Desktop and laptop) both running Lightroom Desktop. What happens is that I edit a batch of images (.CR2 Canon images) on (say) the desktop. Later I review them on the laptop and maybe decide to tweak an image a little more. More and more often, I am presented with "Waiting for settings. This photo is missing updated settings from <name of desktop PC> at <date and time>. Open Lightroom on that device to have edits synced". Sometimes it's the other way round - desktop PC is waiting for edits on laptop. This will happen even if I have the two PCs next to each other, both with LR running and on the same network. If I (for example) change the rating of an affected image on one PC with both copies of LR running, that change will be synced to the other PC in a minute or two - it works in either direction. However, for that image the edit settings will never be synced again. The only solution I have found is to delete the image, then permanently delete it, on both devices (the deletion will not be synced), then re-import the CR2 and start all over again with it. I have tried uninstalling Lightroom on both PCs, then removing all traces from the AppData folders and the registry before reinstalling. I always check to ensure syncing is complete before exiting Lightroom. In any case, though, I can see syncing is happening in real time, because changes to flags and ratings are synced almost immediately. Edit settings are not. I have reached the stage where I only edit using the desktop PC, because I know what will happen if I start using the laptop - it may work for a few images, but soon I will waste an hour of my time getting an image synced. This makes a nonsense of the Adobe Cloud system. Please - what is going on here?

Oh, well, it was worth a try - sorry it didn't work out. I'm not an Adobe expert, just an ordinary user, but if Lightroom is identifying a photo as a video I'm thinking there might be something corrupted in the database - this might be one for Adobe Support to have a look at, unless anyone else knows better.

This has worked for me in the past - try finding the deleted photo in the "Deleted" folder in Lightroom. If it's there, right-click and restore it (don't choose "delete permanently"). Then see if the sync completes correctly. If syncing works OK, delete the offending photo in the normal way and it should be OK.

Q1: Lightroom Desktop is cloud-based, so it expects to find its data in the cloud - the the image in cloud storage is, as it were, the primary copy. Therefore it makes sense (to me, anyway!) that the first thing it does when you import new images is to upload them, and you do the reviews and culling afterwards. Because of your current circumstances this isn't working for you, but there is a workaround. In Lightroom, pause syncing before you do the import (click on the cloud-shaped icon top-right). Do the import, and with syncing still paused do the culling. The re-enable syncing. Only the remaining images will be uploaded. Q2. Lightroom does not need to download images after uploading them, but it will do so if you have chosen to keep a local copy (Edit / Preferences / Local Storage). In you circumstances, I would suggest keeping Smart Previews locally, but not a copy of originals. Q3. Lightroom Desktop (i.e. the cloud version) is for people who are likely to work on their images on more than one device (PC in the office, laptop out on the road and maybe a phone or tablet). The central cloud storage facilitates this. Lightroom Classic is for people who work mainly or exclusively on one computer, where local storage will be quicker and more convenient. It is possible to combine the two approaches and I did for a while, but I found it easier to go fully cloud based. I'm not a professional, though, just a hobbyist. As you your final query - I think Q2 covers it. Hope this helps.

Rolling back worked here and I've got the grid lines back, thanks - for me, the changes in 5.4 can wait until the bug is fixed. Just be aware that rolling back also resets preferences and reinitialises the help system, so I'm back to those infuriating pop-ups telling me how do things every few seconds with no way to turn them off. Ho hum.

Lightroom Desktop 5.4 running on Windows 10 PRo
Steps to reproduce:-
While editing an image, open the Geometry panel and select the Rotate slider. Note that the grid overlay no longer appears on the image, making it difficult to ensure lines in the image are vertical or horizontal.
Same applies to the Horizontal and Vertical adjustments.
For Rotate a workaround is to use the Crop tool instead (grid works OK).
